I don't want to say it. It would be a sacrilegious and those were all-time greats but the 3 frosh we have now, they have a chance to be really really good. If we can just get some big guys.

They have a long way to go but this is not altogether a completely off base assertion.

I don’t know how it will turn out but X is way ahead of BK at this point in their careers. I try to avoid comparing BKs group as we remember them to the current group not even halfway thru their first year.

A "long way to go" for sure.
Johnson, however IMO so far is beyond where any of them were as freshmen.
McGowen's offensive skill set ability is beyond all of them IMO. Now, will he end up past them?....I obviously don't know, but the potential is there.
Toney because of his height and where he plays on the court can only be
compared to Brown as I see it. I thought Brown was really good. Can Toney
be equal or better than Brown when it's all said and done? I really don't know,
but I like his overall game, his rebounding, his "smoothness," and obviously
his potential.

All three of these guys are clearly talented and tireless, intense players. They
also are being coached by someone who apparently is bringing out the best in them. I'm not saying the others weren't coached well, but these three are going to get
better and better with Capel's coaching.

I didn't want to say it but I think this trio has more raw talent. However, the other 3 had so much grit/will/determinstion/savvy that is impossible to quantify. Plus they played in well-defined roles in a very detailed system. They were great fits for H-D.

Johnson/McGowens/Toney remind me of the type of backcourt that would upset a Pitt team in the NCAAT. You know that 6, 7, 8 seed that would have the best player on the court and we fight about why the lower seed always has the best player.

I think it'll be impossible to accomplish what BK/JP/JB did but these 3 guys could make a nice tourney run regardless of regular season record because they can score. Just need a big guy.

Bumping this due to last night's performance. I've been watching Pitt long enough to know that if these 3 stay together awhile and stay healthy, we could be Top 10 good in a few years IF we can get big guys.

I’ll say it. And I texted a couple of buddies last night. These 3 are better than those 3 were as freshmen. Who knows how they will progress but raw talent wise each’s ceiling is higher.

They are infinitely better than the former greats. They don't have a long way to go. They are there. I think a lot of "old timers" are going to be shocked at the end of this year and they will wake up and realize their fandom has become as irrelevant as printed newspapers. Maybe they can all hang out at McDonalds and relish the days of yore.

It dissapointments me greatly that after watching winning basketball for the better part of 15 years the average Pitt fan has no idea how or why that happened.

You need really good players buying into doing the things necessary to win. A lot of teams have talent. A lot of teams beat themselves (most). If your best one or two players don't buy in you are already done. Will Capel get these guys to buy in after they get a little success and people get in their ear? Im not sure. The early 2000's guys have these guys beat by a mile and odds are that will remail the case.

The old timers were winners and did it over a sustained period of time at the highest levels in the Big East. X, Trey, and Toney need to get us to a NCAA tourney first before I can say they have eclipsed the old timers.

X,Trey and Toney collectively play more minutes and put up about 7 more shots per game, shoot at a higher percentage from the field, the line and from three point land than did BK, JP and JB comparing freshmen years. As a coach I would have JP on X, BK on Trey and JB on Toney. Playing these match ups out in my mind the old guys would not give up 39 points which is the current average of the new threesome, but given that the three old guys were only mediocre shooters their only chance would be if the game was reffed under old Big East rules.
