Going into this year, I think most of us just viewed this year as “part of the process” and almost a practice season for the future.
Well, Jeff Capel and the team had other ideas.
It was only roughly 10 months ago I left the Pete for the last time of the 2017-18 season and felt truly hopeless about the state of Pitt basketball.
Then Capel was hired, and the future was bright again.
But I don’t think anybody saw the present being quite this bright.
The future will be much brighter. Hopefully consistent Top 25 classes, NCAA tournment regularly, a deep tourney run here and there and so on. It all seems possible if not likely with Capel at the head of the program.
But there is just something special about a year like this year. After going 0-18 last year, after the state the program was in, and then the low expectations of this season, these last 2 wins have just been... awesome.
We’ll hopefully have better teams in the future, higher profile wins, and hopefully exciting March runs.
But with expectations you lose a little of that excitement you feel right now, as the wins become more expected and the losses are much more disappointing.
Let’s truly enjoy this year. Whether it ends with 5 conference wins and no postseason, an NIT berth, or an a magical NCAA berth, there is something special about how this team is overachieving and making us all believers. The wins are so much fun, and even the losses are their own type of fun too.
The future of Pitt basketball is so bright, but the present is kinda bright too...
Hail to Heather Lyke,
Hail to Jeff Capel,
And Hail to Pitt!
