Lottery Ticket Fede

Credit to him for that but that's a once in a lifetime recruit. Very few lower D1 recruits become lottery picks. He didn’t beat Rider for him. Jamie's last 5 years, he got:

Adams: once in a lifetime, relationship with his handler

Johnson: once in a lifetime NEC level recruit turned lottery

Artis/Young: good recruits, needed more of these

The rest were Chris Jones and Rozelle Nix. Did an unbelievable coaching those misfits though.
James Robinson was a top 60 recruit. Chris Jones was actually pretty decent as was Newkirk and Luther. Nix was a really bad idea. The most perplexing one was Damon Wilson who was a top 100 player. But he was a poor evaluation by Dixon.

Would have been a good player with a better supporting cast. He didn't have that as an upperclassmen. Agree tho, could not create for others or himself.

Yea, he would have been good on a loaded team where he could just dribble the ball up the court and hand the ball to NBA players and stay out of their way but a lot of guys could do that.

Fair to call me out on that one. However, he was an under recruited local who had ties to the program. So I wouldn't consider it a recruiting win. Nonetheless he obviously was a good player that I left out.
Yeah 2 lotto picks in say 4 years
What a bum

But according to some we needed more Damon Wilson’s and less cam Johnson and Lamar Patterson types

Same idiots who screamed for JJ moore to play more

Where do you come up with this stuff? Damon Wilson was a miss, I do not remember people on the Lair clamoring for more of him. As for Lamar, I don't remember people wanting less, as a junior and senior he was one of the smoothest players we have ever had. You are correct on JJ. People wanted more because he was billed as a great scorer, but, he didn't do other things that were required to play for Jamie.

You guys must really not remember all the bitching that people here did about Patterson his first year and even into his second year here. There were quite a few people that thought he was completely over his head and would never amount to anything at all.

In fact he's probably the perfect example of why you shouldn't give up on freshmen just because they don't live up to your expectations right out of the box.

You could probably put Wanamaker in that category as well.

Definitely, I don’t know how many times he would miss wide open layups and looked completely in over his head as a freshman. But what development, turned into a great player. In this new era I just don’t know if many kids will stick around to develop.

People weren’t too excited about Lamar during his RS freshman and Freshmen season. Especially during his freshman season, many couldn’t see why he was playing instead of JJ.

Come on DT. He was the definition of a lucky powerball ticket.
Not really sure that’s true … when he first got to Pitt, even during the summer before, his potential was clear. I’d call him more of a late bloomer and when he grew, that’s when his potential was obvious and that’s when he signed him. I’d say he would have been more of a lottery ticket if we had got him when he was still 6’2 about 18-24 months earlier.

Yea but he wasnt any good. I dont care what his assist to TO ratio was, he created no offense
He was a good college point guard. He was forced to be offensive because we had no shooters. Look how we did 1 year after he left when all other starters returned.

Lottery ticket based off what?

He was a junior college All American honorable mention and a former Bob Huggins commit.

JC recruits can very often be hit or miss, but Fede actually had a decent background history at least with a quality coach who offered him in Huggins.

I even said after the exhibition games he is significantly better than what people think. I dont think we got "lucky" here. I think Capel found a quality big man. I wish Capel would find more quality guards in the future.
Pretty much everyone thought he could not chew gum and walk. It was obvious after the first exhibition we may have caught lightning in a bottle. No sure why the expectations for Fede were so low. I guess the list of failed bugs above had something to do with it.

I think it’s better stated that no one (fans) knew anything about him, but those who had seen him play knew what they were getting. It reminds me of Ontario Lett - no one knew about him except Howland and staff but when we saw Lett in the Blue Good game, it was pretty clear they had found a guy who had had some skills.

I don’t think this is luck - I think it is good evaluation.

Who is this everyone ?
He contributed well

Prior to the season there is not one poster I can remember who was excited about Fede. I had no clue but I was optimistic after the first exhibition.
That’s my recollection also.

He couldn’t do much besides set up an offense. It wasn’t his teammates holding him back. He was slow to the basket and couldn’t shoot.

I wasn't "excited" but I did say something like his JUCO stats translate to ACC-level reserve which is something we've rarely had.

The twins seem to fit a lot more with what the op was trying to say. They did not have much of a background history to go by including offers. They were rated as top 100 guys by 1 recruiting outlet and that's about it. They have not spent a whole lot of time in the US. They were fairly large unknowns outside 1 season at IMG. I think with a proper strength and conditioning program the 2 of them could make sizable jumps next year. We may have hit lottery tickets with those 2, which is more in line with what the op was looking for. But I still think we need to wait a little more with those 2 to see how things go. However, early signs have been encouraging.
The twins are probably the most pleasant recruiting surprise of the Capel Era.

Think Mo has to be #1 , Stoney Brook !
Hinson #2 do to his excellence
X has to be mentioned no one expected that in his freshman yr .
The twins have the potential to be program changers .

Yeah, there’s some potential there to be positive about, but I think we need to see a good bit more such as some major major GLFs to start talking about the twins as program changers.

Mo Gueye? Hinson? I mean can we at least wait until they contribute something before declaring them a pleasant surprise? They’re just bodies right now
They are a surprise because I never expected them to amount to anything. The fact that they are more than nothing already is a pleasant surprise.

I'm not saying they are good or even above average. They are just better than I expected them to be.

Maturation physically and getting use to the speed of the game is all that’s needed . Put hem with either a powerful 4&5 Pitts front line will be tough to beat . Remember I said potential.

Completely agree.
