My brother is musically trained and teaches high school music. He argued me that EDM artists are not musicians. This is the root of another comment I made on theses boards a week ago. Why does someone have to play a classical instrument to be a musical artist? Isn’t anyone who makes music considered as such? Rapper, EDM DJ, Piano player, cello player, country music singer, etc. are all musicians to me.

People have always claimed the newest trend wasn’t music. After al, Stravinsky’s Rites of Spring was largely hated when it premiered.

The funniest part about that argument is that it presupposes the two things are mutually exclusive. For example, if I said the late rapper Pimp C was a talented musician, a lot of people would laugh at me, blissfully unaware that he was classically trained and could play the organ, flute, trumpet and french horn. J Dilla could play a dozen instruments, ditto for Madlib, Nujabes was an extremely talented flutist, etc. I'm going to stop there because I realized that 3 of those guys are dead now and I'm sad.
