Mark Schmidt to UMass

Is that done done. I knew they were throwing ridiculous money at him but if so great job by Bamford who is much maligned by the UMass faithful of getting the guy he targeting from day 1
Reminds me a little of DeChellis to Navy and to a lesser extent Dixon to TCU in that they are leaving for lesser programs but getting out before the sh!t hits the fan because all had veteran teams and would be facing some tough years. Not so much so in Dixon’s case, as he would have manufactured enough wins with the Kithcarts of the world but DeChellis left a D2 team at PSU and that's basically what Schmidt is leaving at St. Bonaventure. The time is perfect for Schmidt to leave. Thought he could do better than UMass though.

I do think Schmidt probably figures this is as good as he can do in Olean. Made the tourney last year and returned an upperclassman-laden Top 25 team that underachieved this year. Still, they are headed to the NIT Final 4. Hard to have a better 2-year run and get better players to go there than he has now with the likes of Welch, Adaway and Osunniyi.

He was offered just shy of 2 mill to coach a mid major team in his home state. It’s not done yet according to my source in Olean. Will prob be announced the second they lose though

UMass is absolutely not a lesser program than St. Bonaventure lol

I grew up near Olean and went to lots of Bonnies games, and though I love them, him staying there as long as he did is a miracle. Its a tiny school, the campus isn't especially impressive, and it's in the middle of nowhere. Amherst and UMass is a much better job.

Yeah, poor Coulibaly (who I hope gets a transfer waiver) is going to be the only player on the roster next year who can play basketball at all so this is a straight up cash out from Schmidt. I think that he'll do well there though.

Real nice hire by UMass. I assumed they’d go after Grasso or an assistant with NE/NY roots but to get Schmidt is impressive. Obviously this is an in conference move, but a good UMass team definitely moves the needle more than the Bonnies. Next move for the A10 should be getting Temple back in the fold

Why would Temple want to go back to the A-10? And this is coming from someone who loved the league in the 90s and 2000s when it was as good of a league in the country and could get McDonalds All Americans? But why would they want to in 2022?

The UMass job is miles ahead of the St. Bonaventure job what are you talking about?

Because the new AAC is no better and possibly worse:

Temple
Memphis
Wichita State
SMU
UAB
USF
ECU
Tulane
Tulsa
UTSA
North Texas
FAU
Rice

I said before the A10 should go after Temple and Memphis and start a football league with those 2, UMass, UConn, Army, and have Rhode Island and Richmond move up.

Yeah this board is full of accurate information. Jesus, if you don’t actually know something then just shut up.

Sources means you saw something on the internet and thought you were clever and would put it on here. At least attribute the information to the twitter guy you stole this from. Nobody believes someone with contacts to UMASS and St Bonnie’s is posting on the free Pitt board. Good God. This board is nothing but delusional wannabes.

It was a UMass reporter and it came across the basketball page I follow on Twitter. Nobody is trying to claim it as some kind of inside scoop dipstick.

You absolutely did. This is the first post you made attributing it to a person other than you. Your write ups all had the insinuation that you knew someone. Jesus. Grow up and be a friggin man.

Because Temple is a massive R1 public research focused urban school with Power 5 ambitions. While the A-10 is made up of fine institutions, Temple is not a small private Catholic university. Temple has just two peer institutions in the A-10, UMass and GW. Maybe URI, VCU and Mason kinda. The A-10 was once a phenomenal league but it’s a shell of itself. Why would Temple pass up 7 million a year in media rights from ESPN for a figure significantly less?

Temple has the best basketball facilities in the Philly region (yes, better than Villanova). The reason they were bad is because Fran Dunphy couldn’t recruit worth a lick and ruined the brand that Chaney had developed.

They just hired a new President and hired the #2 at Texas to be the new AD. You think going back to the A-10 is even remotely on the table? It is not.

The A10 is probably a better basketball league than the new AAC. The new AAC is quite possibly just a 1 bid league.

I can't imagine ESPN is going to keep their current contract with the ACC with the departures of Cincy, Houston, and UCF.

Temple is wasting its time in such a bad league, so far from home, flying its volleyball team to Texas. They should get with Memphis and join my A10 football league.

Well you’d be wrong, because ESPN has already said they’re going to keep their current deal with the AAC. A league with Memphis, SMU, Wichita and UAB isn’t going to be a 1 bid league. And again, no they’re not. You don’t understand, it’s more than just about basketball or athletics with this stuff. The school demographics matters. Temple’s shot at a Power 5 invite is only through the AAC.

Not sure you’re aware but the current G5 leagues will effectively not allow another FBS football league. The CFP money is already tiny enough for the G5 teams. They won’t allow another league like a new A-10 football league to come in and divide the small piece of the pie they get 6 ways instead of 5.

The G5 has no control over what leagues decide to start. There is talk the WAC may all move up to FBS eventually. If the A10 added Temple and Memphis and started a football league with UMass, UConn, Army, Richmond, and Rhody, the G5 could not tell them no. And neither could the NCAA as the only requirement is that the league have 8 members.

Also, the new AAC will be a 1 bid league in 7 out of 10 years. I'd say in 3 years out of 10, they'll get 2 in.....and that's out of 14 teams. The A10 is clearly the better league with VCU, Dayton, Loyola, SLU, Richmond, etc.

They absolutely have a say. The CFP is not run by the NCAA. The 10 FBS conferences could and absolutely would decide to keep a new WAC or A-10 out of the playoff. The WAC is not going to move up to the FBS, their members moving up are all going to join C-USA. All those schools did that because of NY6 $ access. They’d be shut out otherwise.

and no, a league with Temple, Memphis, SMU, Wichita State, UAB and even Charlotte will be more than fine.

There will be a new CFP and the G5 are going to be mostly cut out anyway. The P4 + B12 aren't going to be as nice. They'd probably cut in the A10 for a tiny slice.

Also, if by "fine," you mean a 1 bid league, then ok. Its going to be 1 bid 7 years out of 10. And you're banking on UAB and Charlotte? Wichita without Marshall? How long can SMU stay strong? The new AAC is a disaster, just an absolute disaster. If I was Memphis or Temple, I'd run as fast as I can away from that dumpster fire.

Yeah, I’d honestly take the Atlantic 10 over the AAC. No disrespect to the American, but I think it’s gotten a little watered down with the replacements for Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF while the Atlantic has basketball-first schools. I’d be more willing to bet on them in the long run.

Also, just thinking out loud (and I don’t think Temple fans would like this), I actually don’t think it’d be a bad idea for them to join the A-10 and then sponsor a northeast football conference. Temple, UMass, UConn, Army, and Navy would be a good start. Three more FCS call-ups and they’d be set.

I think we’ve discussed this before, but I actually think Maine may be the best candidate for FBS. They’re investing a ton in athletics, including a brand new football stadium.

Martin would win there. I hated the idea in 2018, but Mark Schmidt would be near the top of my list but my God, they may go 2-16 in the A10 next year. So his recruiting up there is concerning.

He recruited 5 starters to Olean who all could play high major ball. I think he can recruit pretty well.
