I saw the Pitt Navy game in 1976 when TD broke the rushing record. Navy shot off the cannon and I was told that it was the first time that Navy shot the cannon for an opposing team. I think if you see the you tube tape of TD the announcer even comments about the cannon. This game went a long way for Pitt to win the National Championship because as I remember (and I am older) Navy had played Michigan previously. The Navy coach after the game remarked that Michigan had nothing over Pitt. As it turned out, Michigan went undefeated also but Pitt got the #1 rating. or something like that

I was also at Navy a couple of years ago and saw Navy simply beat us (ouch).

As for this year, Pitt has to stop the option (said like any dummy). But Navy should not be able to stop our offense. Navy's OL is under-sized and their CBs are like 5'8". I think we should be able to run straight up the middle and blend the running game with a successful passing game. But navy seems to be good.

UM lost to Purdue the day we played Army. Pitt Stadium exploded when the score was announced.

Purdue beat Michigan that year. That's how we climbed over them to #1.

Thanks for the correction. But I lived in Chicago at the time and a lot of Big 10 fans and media still thought Michigan should have been #1 after they won the Rose Bowl because of the strength of schedule.

John Robinson of USC and Bo Shembechler of Michigan both said before the Rose bowl that the winner should jump Pitt for the NC.

Pitt could have beaten one of those teams at noon then after a half hour breather kicked the other one's ass too.

I to was at the Pitt game, Purdue kicked FG I think on the last play of the game, may have been 17 to 14 final. The score and Purdue victory was announced and the fans began chanting "were #1" and we sure as all hell were.

Al Romano statement following the victory over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, "cancel the Rose Bowl, Pitt is #1."

Michigan lost two games that season, because they also lost to USC in the Rose Bowl in addition to the Purdue game.

However, Michigan beat Navy that season 70-14, so it seems unlikely that their coach would downplay anything Michigan did to them for any reason other than being pissed off at the butt kicking they took.

I think Boyd is going to have a field day with Navy. I was at the Army-Navy game and Army's QB, who was at best an FCS level QB, did extrememly well throwing the ball against Navy. If I'm not mistaken, Boyd needs about 130 yards to break 1000 for the year. If they double or triple team him (still think he gets open) then look for Ollison, Ford, and the TE's to have huge games. Like you said, it all depends on how the D preforms though.

It should be a high scoring game. Their QB is the key to their offense.
