man, this field is completely cleared for us. denver and tOSU are really the only top teams left. and we already beat denver. not that anything is given.

tOSU really has to just completely #### up to miss out on the finals.

Vermont beat San Diego 1-0 on a PK in OT. Truly one of the worst soccer matches I have seen in I don’t know how long. Neither to me was as good as KC and neither team appeared to have a visible strategy.

Vermont has one really dangerous attacker: a freshman from Philly whose name I think is Basilio. They stressed defense, but I dont think they counterattack nearly as well as KC did. Their defense is big and they drop a lot of guys into the box. San Diego had very few good looks.

I don’t think San Diego had attackers who are nearly as skilled as Pitt’s. If we press the action I think we should score 2 or more goals. I thought Vermont looked for PKs a few times by going down where there was no real contact. The one that got called was a real penalty though, albeit a stupid one because there was another defender behind him.

3-0 seems about right to me.
the game looked like each team was only able to throw(kick) 65 yard hail Mary's for offense and was that way for more than half the "possessions" and that is abusing the use of that word

I've seen HS soccer games look very similar, but the girls couldn't kick 65 yards, only about 40ish

not sure where Vermont plays next but they probably would prefer not to have a home field game compared to how I expect the weather was in San Diego :)

That would be the 2nd round for volleyball, right? I was about to say that it’s hard to get excited for a 2nd round volleyball match…but it looks like it will be Oklahoma which isn’t too bad. I’d rather be in attendance than watch on tv and be subjected to 100 shots of Big Ben throughout and have to hear how he loves volleyball because his sister played at Oklahoma.

I’m pretty sure the game was played in Durham. Duke was the host of that bracket.

I watched for two minutes. People were wearing comfortable clothing so I assumed it was in San Diego. I can’t imagine it was in Durham, as 2 hours west in Winston Salem, people were bundled up in coats and gloves.

TY Fk_Pitt!!!

c'mon @mike412, I can't trust anything you say from here on :)

FINAL SCORE : Vermont 1, San Diego 0
SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
Yaniv Bazini sealed the deal for the Catamounts 29 seconds into the first overtime period in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament, scoring on a penalty kick to give Vermont the 1-0 victory on Sunday night from Torero Stadium.

The higher seeded teams were all at home in the third round, so even though they were both technically unseeded, the NCAA must have had San Diego higher ranked.

Or else no one wanted to play a game in Vermont on December 1st, one or the other!

My daughter had a wonderful friend and Club teammate from North Allegheny who played at Vermont. The Vermont players were hitting the slopes the day their season ended and were allowed to ski.

Looks like the high temperature in Burlington yesterday was 32, so not really all that much different than Pittsburgh!

Wake would be a fairly significant favorite over Ohio State if there were betting odds. OSU drew Stanford 0-0 and advanced on a coin flip (PK's). Stanford outshot OSU 11-9, not that that's a big margin and I didnt watch the game but I would have picked Stanford in this game. And Wake is better.

I wonder if Wake is hitting their stride. Apparently they had the top recruiting class and the kid who scored that banger in OT Sunday was the top recruit in the country?? Could be that their freshmen are not playing like freshmen anymore? I don’t care enough to look into it but…

I am really shocked by the first half. Maybe it was the travel from Vermont to San Diego, but Vermont had very little offense in that game. They look 1000% better today.

I thought Pitt would dominate possession but that hasn’t been the case.

Pitt is trying to do too much 1-on-1, or sometimes 1-on-2, and although they have had some shots, none have been threatening. Vermont has had less shots but more scoring chances.

Critical not to fall behind.

What a horrible play. Two reliable players team up on a terrible turnover and Vermont scores.

The way Pitt has played, I don’t see a comeback here.

I don’t either. It’s not like they’ve been dominating and it’s only a matter of time before scoring comes.

This team has been mediocre all year. Their game is too much east to west and slow the game down way too much.
Today they had opportunities to break out and beat Vermont to their goal but they held it up and let Vermont get 11 player
in front of the goal. We have zero finishers on this team. Sahmkow is terrible. He is never on the ball side of a defender and
has zero foot skills. Jay has done wonders for this program but his style of play is not conducive to the type of players he
recruits. You need a finisher with speed and foot skills to run this offense, like Valentine Noel. Look how many times they
were shut out this year.

Disappointing loss. I guess the bright side is when you have a “down” year and make the elite 8 that tells you how far the program has come.

Soccers a funny game. And it’s why a school like Vermont can play as an equal to Pitt. Pitt dominated possession and generated way more corners. But only had a slight edge on shots. I had the game 60/40 in favor of Pitt. But a bad mistake can be fatal and this team couldn’t equalize.

Said all year that this wasnt one of Jay's most talented teams. And yet, he managed to win an ACC Championship, gain a #1 ranking and reach the Elite 8. A great job by Jay and a great season. This team didnt have those MLS players we've had and/or those goal scorers we've had.

This team was better than Vermont but 1 mistake, 1 goal is all it takes. They got their goal and UVm parked the bus. They were playing a 4-2-3-1 but after scoring, it was basically a 6-4-0. 10 guys defending. Almost like 4 Center Backs. They were giving us the wings but packing everyone in the box, not to get beaten on crosses. And I guess because of that, we tried very few crosses, just past the ball East to West, back and forth, trying to rely on a wing to beat a player and creat something. Didnt work. Hats off to UVm. It is what it is. We'll get that Natty one day.

I didnt understand why we insisted on making our crosses so deep towards the goal line. The box was packed tight as dolphin's blow hole in those instances.

It was much more open (relatively) when the ball was on the wing but just outside the box. Why not cross it from there and have your forwards make runs into the cross?

You’d expect a Nick Saban coached team to do so.

Its so hard in soccer for 2 reasons:

1. Few American kids. If there was some type of limit on internationals, then the best American kids would want to play for the elite programs. Now, everyone recruits mostly internationally and those kids have no idea about the D1 hierarchy. And there is such a wide global talent pool that even if they did, the difference between a European that Pitt and can and what UVm or KC can get is tiny. Just so many players.

2. Nature of the sport. Winning a 4-5 game knockout tournament in soccer is as random as it gets.

I am guessing Jay didnt want those early crosses because of how many defenders UVm had in the middle. They essentially were playing 4 Center Backs. And that's kind of what we do. Have our wings make a play, beat someone 1v1 and then cross it from the goal line, sucking some players toward you....or win a corner. Jay knows 10000% more soccer than me but man, I was saying just send in cross after cross. Even try some 25 yard shots they were giving us from the top of the box. Maybe the GK fumbles one. Maybe we get a corner off one. But that wasnt guaranteed to work either and then we'd say we should have done what Pitt actually did do.

I would have sent cross after cross from different spots to see where you could find a weakness. I saw that anytime Pitt had the ball on the wing deeper than 18yds, Vermont's backline was posted up 8-10yds off the goal line. I wanted to see crosses from there to try to get Vermont to turn and chase. Many would get picked by the keeper, but I think it could have applied some different pressure. Vermont was very good when they were face up on Pitt's offense and Pitt just kept trying to attack into it.

You're right that what Pitt did may well have been the best attack, but it would have been nice to see them try some different things

Yea, I would have just sent 25 balls into the box and hoped for the best. We really didn't attempt many shots in the 2nd Half.
