I’ve seen a lot of people saying he isn’t interested in Pitt and isn’t going to Pitt because he doesn’t like the city campus.... but for someone who “doesn’t like it” he sure does seem to spend a lot of time there visiting.

True. But in recent years there have been more than a few local athletes who have been around Pitt and have shown what was perceived to be “serious interest”, only to sign to play elsewhere.

It’s nice that he’s interested; our staff will treat him accordingly.

Do your reember Tyler Reed.... he lived at Pitt until LoI day and then signed with UPS because he liked to fish(so he said)... one just never knows what’s going thru a kid’s mind.

Yes but guys like Kristofik or Jurkovich, I mean they couldn't even be bothered.

In a way, I respected them for that. They knew that Pitt wasn’t it for them, so they didn’t waste the time of Pitt’s coaches or the money of Pitt’s recruiting budget.

Compare those players to the high school kids who feigned interest in Pitt just to watch Pitt basketball - back when a Pitt basketball ticket was the toughest ticket to get in Pittsburgh.

I get that but the point being debated was whether his being s frequent visitor to practices in of itself necessarily meant Pitt was at the top of his list or of very high interest.....

Reed wasn't a bust. He wasn't an All American, but really he was no worse than Lucas Nix was for us. Both were pretty highly regard OL from TJ.

Wade and Sanders too. So the amount of time spent there means

It could be looked at as a positive. I learned a long time ago that eliminating an opportunity shouldn't be a negative. It lets you spend more time on deals you can close. Jurkovec was a loss, Kristofic was not.

I need help with this list of bust that this board crucified the coaching staffs for

1) Reed was not a bust. Multiple year starter at PSU who was drafted by the Bears and hung around in their organization for a few years. Not a bad career at all and not a bust. He was a loss for Pitt for sure.

2) Pinky, despite all the physical talent he had, he was too damn soft for his own good. If he had half the spirit of, lets say Andrew Taglianetti, he would have been All-American. In the end he was a bust and better that he went elsewhere, no loss to Pitt at all.

3) Sterling Jenkins is his name. Top 3 lineman in the Country his senior year but was not even honorable mention All-Conference in HS. Anyone who actually saw him play in HS (like I did) never thought much of him. My 5'10" nephew who plays at D3 John Carrol dominated Jenkins when they played and my nephew was a sophomore at the time when Jenkins was a senior. College coaches tend to get caught up in size too much and believe their own BS that they can "coach them up." At the end of the day, you need actual talent. SJ despite being athletic, did not have talent, but he had size and athletic ability so they is why he was so highly recruited. He was a bust but he never should have been considered a bust to begin with.

4) You are talking about Anthony Morelli who was a 2 year starter at PSU. He was an un-drafted free agent for I believe the Cards. He was a top HS QB coming out as he was very physically gifted, but he was everyone questioned his intelligence. He screwed himself going to PSU where everyone knew JayPa was never going to be much help to develop him. He was much better served going to Pitt, learning from Palko and Walt for a few years, and maybe his future would have ended up different. Tough to call him an outright bust. No he did not live up to his billing, but did not fail to launch either.

Actually Jenkins was a top rated OL coming out of his Soph year into his Jr year. He gradually faded during his Jr and especially Sr years.

Morelli, I remember Morelli sitting in some practices and couldn't grasp Walt's playbook which pushed him to the simpler Paterno Way offense at Penn State.

Morelli wouldnt have been able to handle our offense. Too many stars in it for him to flourish. Dont think his PSU teams had 1 NFL player on it.

Morelli went to the Tire Bowl in Charlotte with Pitt where he sat in on Walt's QB meetings. It was an easy decision to make to go to PSU where they ran an offense not too different from Penn Hills'.

There may well be a little truth to our "sophisticated offense" intimidation ... but come on ... no stud recruits are gonna lack the confidence they can handle the next level, especially at a Pitt. There was assuredly 'something else' that turned that tide, whether it was their aura of supremacy got bought into (esp by the stage dad), their negative recruiting against us (no doubt relentless, and we often don't help our own cause there, with boneheaded losses or administrative moves that play into enemy coaches narrative), or something more nefariou$.

Walt was surely a bit more cerebral but let's not go crazy. It's still just football. The guy and his dad got feted as gods there and liked it and followed the piper. Sometimes things are that simple.

Dude I saw Jenkins play, take away his measurables and there was nothing and i mean nothing special about him. Like I said not 1 year was he even HM all conference. How are you a top rated player and not even be HM all conference.

I think high school coaches do that crap on purpose, I really do. Kid was given all this ridiculously high praise from recruiting websites in his soph/jr year so all the coaches in his conference don't vote for him cause of it.

Now I know little about his high school days, I was not scouting baldwin 4 years ago and the way wpial changes conferences, I don't even know who is in baldwin's conference. When I played (mid 90's), my conf was baldwin, ringgold, bp, usc, lebo, union town, laurel highlands, and albert gallatin.. fast forward 20 years and all of those teams are not only not in same conference, most aren't even in same classification.

OK, im off point. back to my rant. I think coaches vote for others with all conference out of spite, I really do. You cant tell me there were 5 better linemen in his division in high school.

This was a direct quote from Moronelli. He said Walt's playbook was far too complicated and that the Nit playbook was more like the Penn Hills playbook.

You can believe it or not.

Ahhh yes, Al Gallatin. West Virginia in Greene County.

Dan how in the heck did Pitt go 11-13 with all those star players in 2006-7?Where PSU went 18-8 with a bunch of nobody's and Morelli at QB!

Trust me when I tell you there were. Hell USC had 3 of them. Pitt's Gabe Houy, Brandon Ford, and a kid that went to Robert Morris who started as a Freshman names Matt Fennell. I know you don't know me but I saw SJ twice and he was all hype and no substance.

Back to Carmody for a second, this thread has gone astray. He may be at Pitt his fair share but he has been to the Pedophile St. University at least 7 or 8 times that are documented. If Fast talkin Franky wants him, then you can bet he will get him, unless of course, something has seriously changed. That said, the Milk-dud seems to get off on coming into Western PA and plucking the best recruits away from Narduzzi. A local recruit of his status even being interested in staying home and playing for the Panthers is newsworthy, even if it doesn't work out.

Honestly we won’t be getting top local recruits until Pitt is a consistent 8+ win team, and being a Top 25 team/Coastal contender consistently. The only hope I have for this area is Elliot Donald. We’re doing fine recruiting in other states atm!
