Mike Leach to Miss St

Wow! Mike Leach in the SEC... this is about to get really fun.

For all those saying great hire, terrific move, etc, etc

Mike Leach 2012-2019 Washington State 55-47 overall, 36-36 Conference

Just for comparison

Pat Narduzzi at Pitt 36-29 overall, 24-16 Conference

So Leach has a .539 winning percentage overall and .500 in conference and people think he is a terrific hire. Narduzzi has a .better mark at .554 overall and .600 in conference and lots of people here bitch and moan

Alrighty then

You can't really look at W-L alone when Leach took over a terrible program and scuffed for three years before he found footing. HCPN walked into a pretty good situation here. Im not totally disagreeing with your overall point though.

I hate these sort of posts. Compare Johnny Majors record at Iowa State (9-25-1 in conference) and Pitt or Tennessee. Some places are hard to win at. Washington State especially so.

Before Leach got to Washington State, Paul Wuff went 9-40 there, including 4-32 in conference. Yeah I'd say Leach did a good job.

As for Leach, he has six times finished a season ranked and won a division title at Washington State in a year they also finished ranked #10. He's had two 11 win seasons, which Pitt hasn't had since Marino.

Yes, he's a good hire. Especially for a place like Mississippi State that is hard to win at where you need a coach who can get a lot of out less talent than your opponents Alabama/LSU/Auburn.

Just for comparison, and because I say so, a Leach coached Pitt team would have scored a td from 1st and goal from the one...

What a Homer post.

Good hire for Miss St. Not sure about the decision by Leach here. There are better jobs he could go to.

Washington State and Mississippi State are both pretty low pressure jobs that still pay a P5 paycheck. Im not sure I'd want to live in Mississippi but im sure his eccentricities will play well there.

Well captain......

I've been to Pullman WA.

You are making excuses that Washington State is hard to win at. Pitt is hard to win at.

And he had ONE, not two 11 win season at Washington State. He did have one previously at Texas Tech - so 2 in 18 years.

The thing that gets him attention is his craziness - his record on the field at WSU is just not that good

So if you want to say he is an entertaining hire, I agree completely. But he is no where near a great hire.

I'm guessing most here dont appreciate the rivalry in that state.

If ole miss is going to make some noise by taking Kiffin, Miss State had to respond and they did.

Its life in the SEC, particularly a talent rich state like Miss.

I hope he kicks the crap out of Kiffin

Watch them Bulldogs fly?

Sorry that's the sorry Eagles song. Tired of that one.

Perfect place for Leach.

He'll get the athletes necessary to run his system.

I'd guess their fans feel like they hit the lottery.

Doubtful, they had Dan Mullen just 2 years ago who is a better coach than Leach.

Not totally discounting Leach but he will do what he usually does, beat the teams he’s supposed to while putting up big numbers and losing to the few teams on his schedule with more talent. That was his MO with Tech and Wazzu. Mississippi St was already doing that and maybe a little more under Mullen.

He had Texas Tech at #2 in November and Washington State at #8 in November. Mic drop.

So you fumbled the mic. Ooops, Doesn't surprise me.

Yep - all he does is win - at a .539 pace overall and .500 in conference over the last 8 years

I can see why you love him with those numbers. Then again, he is crazy, you are crazy - so now I see the attraction on your part. Crazies attract each other

Wulff was an aberration and not a good example. The 3 coaches before him all had better than .500 overall records at Washington St.

Spoken by someone who has never been to the eastern portion of Washington....

He has coached 2 programs in remote outposts without great histories of success and has had each thinking about a NC in November. Pound for pound, he may be the best coach in the country.

No, they do vs what they just had.

If you don't play defense you won't beat many teams in the SEC. Personality wise, he's not going to mesh with their crotchety old money boosters.

Not sure how long he'll last, but I think he'll win 7-8 games a year and go to bowls.

Wulff was an aberration and not a good example. The 3 coaches before him all had better than .500 overall records at Washington St.

I mentioned him because that was his immediate predecessor. Bill Doba didn't get a winning record his last four years before Wulff either.

They had a nine year bowl drought before Leach, who then took them to 6 bowls in the last 7 years.

Mike Price was their high point probably, very good coach. It's either him or Leach.

All time they're a sub .500 program overall, not just in conference. It might not be as hard as Iowa State or Boston College, but it's possibly the worst job in the PAC 12. Some guy named Jackie Sherril went 3-8 in his season at Washington State.

Pitt needs to have the cajones to hire a Leach. They never will.
