it was crazy to schedule Penn State and Okie State on back to back weeks as we have the past two years. There is an old adage for athletic directors to follow when it comes to scheduling and that is to give your head coach a chance to hit the ground running before you start conference play. I realize some of these agreements were made years in advance but the power schools are likely to be good more often than not and won't sneak up on you on a schedule. It is no longer mandatory to follow the 2 power five name schools out of your four ooc games because we are no longer in the Big East and the ACC is loaded with solid programs with great coaches and outstanding athletes. And certainly not tp put them on back to back weeks prior to the conference opening week slot.
At least next year the Penn State and ND games are separated by a month. wouldn't be nice if we took on Georgia State this week instead of Okie State. We would at least regained some confidence from the Penn State game and headed into Georgia Tech with a 2-1 record instead of 1-2 and plenty of doubt from among everyone about the direction this team is headed this year.
In 2019 we play a FCS team (Delaware) a Mac Team (Ohio) a non power five but competitive program in UCF and Penn State. We cant continue to go 2-2 in ooc games . Look at our history the past 15 years or so scheduling solid programs. Michigan State 0-2, Nebraska 0-2, Iowa 1-3, Okie State (0-2), Utah (0-2). Notre Dame 2-4 - even struggled with Navy (2-2).

Even if we go FCS -MAC and or Sunbelt, one brand name and another series with a Power five mid or bottom feeder like an Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa State , Kansas, Oregon State, etc, etc.that would be a respectable schedule and should produce a better record and wins equal more prestige and consequently better recruiting. Take Syracuse , who has to face Florida State, Clemson and Louisville yearly in the Atlantic Division - they have normally taken on a tough ooc as well but this year will play Central Ct, Middle Tennesee (which beat them),and Central Michigan before taking on LSU. In the future they will follow the 3-1 model with next year for instance Liberty, Western Michigan, Holy Crss and Maryland. In 2020 they face Wisconsin and lower perceived schools.
We have some solid matchups in the next decade with the likes of Cinncinati, Tennesee and West Virginia so lets balance the schedule out in those years and beyond.
Give your coaches a chance before conference play - even Alabama does!

So you are saying we suck as a program? Let's be honest, why don't we just stop this charade and drop down a division in football? We can go back to the Big East basketball, play FCS football and play our home games at Highmark Stadium.

Why not?

That's exactly what the OP is saying. Let's get out of P5 football all together.

And could you freakin please use paragraphs with some proper spacing please?

The BE has all Catholic schools, so we would end up in the AAC. Exciting stuff there.

Pitt seems trapped into the ACC deal forcing us to have FBS football, because we like the ACC money. Yet the football program doesn't make money in its current state, has to be subsidized, so is the ACC really such a bonanza?

As far as the FCS thing, I think that would be more good money chasing bad. Just drop football entirely. That also gives more Title Ix flexibility too (can drop some poorly-participated women's sports in equivalence). Funnel the savings into making men's and women's basketball legit (again). Pittsburgh has it's major league sports in football, hockey and yes, even baseball. Basketball is a gap. Basketball really should be our focus.

No what I am saying is that I would have rather have driven 275 miles each way to watch Pitt beat Illinois 28-24 rather than to have watched them lose 59-21and be ridiculed by the national media and of course local media.

Pitt is a 7-6 or 8-5 type football program. It is not like we have had 4 straight losing seasons. Pitt fans are nuts.

The issue is we can't afford the true "tomato can" types. We usually play tough mid-majors and play-off FBS teams. Maybe we should pay more to play only truly horrible programs and only at Heinz. We have to play one power 5 per year per ACC rules. Its time to reach out to the Rutgers', Vandy's, and Kentucky's of the world. Stay away from good programs. Maybe if we can string together 10 or so years of 8 or more win seasons we can break out of this rut.

At that level of success it is fine. But I've been around long enough that you start to feel seismic shifts. Early 90's saw us sort of lurching along, treading water, then the bottom dropped out. With the ACC, I think we all see most of the other programs, or at least our primary opposition for a division title, lifting their games. I think it would really tough for us to absorb a 3-9 kind of season and might launch a repeat of what happened in the mid 90's.

Why the f' is it the end of the world if Pitt only wins 3 or 4 games once in a 15 year span? ND won 4 games last year, MSU 3 games, Michigan won 3 games under Rich Rod. Pitt fans are a joke.

You go undefeated in that middling schedule then expect Pitt to always get bumped out of the 4 playoff schedule talk because of other P5 teams with better power resumes..its a vicious cycle with no end in site, the playoffs are rigged for usual top P5 10 team year in and year out.

Why the F are Pitt fans content with losing? I never want to see a 3- or 4-win season ever again. All those programs you mention have had better success than Pitt either in recent years or just throughout history. Give me a decade where Pitt wins 90-plus games then I'll sit through one 4-8 year. Until that happens, I won't apologize for not wanting that kind of ineptitude.

Go away. How does anyone come up with that after reading the OP. Big boy programs play a big match up out of conference but that's all anyone remembers. Their JV squad is playing the next week against the Mothers of the Poor. This is about scheduling, posturing and perception for recruiting along with Kirk, Coach and Rece.

We're just exchanging opinions here. Why the insult? Do you work for Pitt too?

This board is amazing. A few threads rehashing Harris vs Wanny and of the 2 who's stank stunk less and here the concern is scheduling messing up Pitt's playoff aspirations.

Fine by me. I'll then take watching Pitt in one the next tier bowl games and look back at what a great season it was for my Panthers.

Evidently Pittsburgh you didn't room with engineers or anyone who doesnt care about presenting their
thoughts in an easy-to-read format for folks like you. The OP has a valid point about scheduling.

Why should they? They aren't going to save any money in athletics, and they'll likely have to subsidize even more.

Pitt is a mediocre program. This football program needs wins, not more embarrassment on national TV. The OOC should always be setup so they exit 3-1 at worst. If they ever build a good football program, then you pickup your schedule.

Did Ok St provide an attendance bump? Nope. It likely caused a worse exodus for the remainder of the year.

Yeah, long way to go bro. This should be the last of anyone's concerns. Sign me up right now for getting left out of the playoff.

1 P5 OOC game is PLENTY and its what many programs do anyway!

Concentrate on conf games over these meaningless OOC games and maybe we can get lucky and win the coastal?

exactly as I tried to convey in my original post and presented our body of work over the years against sound opponents. Glad to see that several who responded get it. Wins equal recruits which equal more recruits and a victory over a Power five middle of the pack them is better than getting embarrassed by a top school.Maybe then we can have something tangible to show recruits.

oops - so that the professors on the board don't get mad I meant to type team instead of them. But I am sure you picked up on that .

Wisconsin's OOC schedule included 2 steaming piles of sh!t and a junior college team. Then they go and play a conference schedule much, much easier than Pitt's. Their reward for playing a schedule where they likely won't be an underdog more than once this season will be another top 15 season (after being smoked by a real team in their bowl).

2019's OOC schedule is much easier than than usual but still better than Wisconsin's typical year.

Based on your comments you must think UW sucks as a program as well.

Because Pitt hardly ever wins more than 8 or 9 games in a season, unlike the programs you mentioned. The fact that fans still respond badly to defeats like this weekend's is a miracle in itself.

If you don't want to read complants on a message board I suggest you join the fanbase of a team the wins a bunch or one that has no desire to compete at a high level.

Ok, Nordy,...we understand your position and we aren't buying it. Go have a cigar with Pedey boy and get out of our hair!

If you're going to play real teams in the OOC play your rivals (ped st, wvcc hell even Cincy) that'll at least attempt to fill the stadium. Otherwise play Akron buffalo etc and just get wins.

Pitt makes money in football. Football made about $11 million last year. So Pitt would lose a ton of money if you dropped it. I have no clue why you think it loses money.
