** Let’s start with a most positive vibe! Congrats to our 2-0 Panther Hoopers!!

** Accordingly, a 15 point win against a legit foe from the Missouri Valley Conference is indeed a notable accomplishment.

** But we all know there is still room to grow from the team we are to the team we want to be.

** During the first half of tonight’s game, I feared that we may have been watching a troubling version of the team we are. But in the second half, we were able to enjoy a better look of the team we want to be.

** So what was the difference between the two? Mostly it was defense.

** Offensively, we scored 41 points in the first half and 42 in the other. But the change in the second half was notable on the other end.

** I’ll take a step further. Could it have even been the defense of Zach Austin?

** Zach was certainly a big part of it. His help defense and blocks, followed by clearing the defensive glass were at the center of it, in all of his work playing the four spot.

** The four spot is still the part of this team that needs to be figured out. GDiaz hasn’t yet settled into the spot effectively, while his brother didn’t fare much better there.

** But even if Zach led the way, everyone started to step up defensively in the last 20 minutes and the Racers who blistered their way to 55% shooting in the first half could only manage 31% in the second.

** It’s easy to shoot 55% in a half when your shots aren’t tough ones. Too many of the shots surrendered by our Panthers in earlier parts of the game fit that bill.

** One of the biggest culprits was secondary transition defense. While we weren't giving up basic fast break points, the Racers were often able to get into a good shot just a pass or two following the break.

** I don’t want to suggest that our Panthers aren’t putting forth needed defensive effort. But they are often lacking in needed defensive discipline. I’d rather not use the word lazy, because I don’t believe that’s fair, nor accurate. But we certainly aren’t crisp on defending balls screens, and it’s leading our Panthers too often into being behind drives to the rim. Well, that was the case in the first half anyway.

** In the second half, we tightened our work against ball screens and eventually started pushing the Racers into taking an assortment of questionable shots. When that started, so did the deciding Panther run to take control.

** It’s sure is a good thing we can score.

** What’s been most impressive about the Panthers offense thus far is that we’ve been able to produce points without playing particularly great offense.

** I don’t wish to complain about another 50+% shooting performance, but early on it’s still an offense a bit too reliant on winning one on one battles.

** The good news is that we have a quatrain of Panthers capable of winning one on one battles. Those four totaled 71 Panther points.

** Among that group, they (particularly Jaland) missed a couple of good shots we have probably become accustomed to them putting in the basket,

** It should also be noted that winning one on one battles on mismatches is something Coach Capel is looking for. But moving forward, there will likely be games when we will need to move the ball better to get shots.

** Think back to Clemson on the road last year when we only garnered 4 assists in a tough defeat. And tonight we had only 9.

** On the plus side, Cam’s shot selection tonight was excellent, not to mention his rebounding. His presence alone is a clear step forward from last year.

** Last year is another important piece of perspective when deciding what this game means to our Panther prospects for the coming year.

** Our first test game in game three last year against Florida Gulf Coast which was a 12 point win. If you recall, that one was just a 5 point game at the final TV timeout.

** To my eye, the Racers are a far better foe and we won this one going away.

** Therefore, early on, using last year as that perspective, we are further ahead even if we acknowledge that there are still many ways we can get better.

** Even more, last year in game three, we also weren’t awaiting the arrival of a newcomer who might be able to make the offense significantly better.

** On the other hand, we don’t know yet what Amsal can do to improve our team defense.

** Nonetheless, it’s hard not to think we can be much better with him. Hopefully we will get our first look next week.

** So with that, and this nice win tonight, and the chance for the Football team to go 8-1, following a big win for the Volleyball team over #25 UNC to go 22-1, there are indeed plenty of reasons for a positive Panther vibe! I’m looking forward to learning how it all ends up!

** HTP!

Not much to add, DT. I'm sure Coach Jeff will have a few of the guys shooting FT's in the next practice as that (and the lack of assists) was a glaring weakness

A couple of things to add:

Beebah made a great pass for an assist in the 2nd half (to GDG on the slam) and Cam made an equally great pass to Zach that led to a foul while keeping the play alive

I agree with your assessment of Zach on D, and I'm liking what I see with Dunn

The twins have not taken that GLF ... yet

Great win by the men's BB team as well as the women's volleyball team. Olivia Babcock is a stud-ette!

Let's see the gridiron guys make it a home trifecta tomorrow night at Heinz Field

H2P!!

Gdg looked to be a liability tonight against an athletic 4 man that Murray St had. I agree with you, I'd like to see us pass the ball a little more on offense. Less one on one.

Our defense is our main concern at this point. When we jumped out to the 25-13 lead, our D seemed very active. Pretty sure we got some TO's that led to offense. And we looked crisp with our ball movement. Murr St made some good adjustments on both ends and we started having trouble. Jaland's foul trouble compounded things. His 3 before the half was big, though. But we just weren't good defensively.

GDG is a big factor in this. He doesn't have the athleticism to stay with his man at the 4. He is simply getting beat and not physical enough. There was one play where he left his feet when he shouldn't have, leading to a foul. 7' theoretically should be an advantage at the 4. That hasn't been the case. Beebah also seemed to be a liability tonight on the defensive end. He wound up being mostly a non-factor, with just 12 minutes despite Jaland missing time in the 1st half.

Zack's D was definitely a big factor in the 2nd half. So, was Ellington's injury. If he doesn't go down early in the half, this one could have ended differently.

Our free throw shooting also could have cost us.

I'm surprised our foul trouble wasn't mentioned. Corhen and GDG have been in trouble in both games against teams without any significant inside presence. GDG's foul trouble is more understandable because he's having issues at the 4. But Corhen needs to avoid committing silly fouls. With Amsal almost back, JC may need to consider having GDG backing up Corhen with Amsal and Austin manning the 4. Kante didn't even see the floor tonight, which is telling. All the more reason going this route would make sense for us. If Cam had picked up his 5th, who knows if we pull this out?

Ultimately, this ended up being a 7-minute game when it was still 66-65. Murray State just crapped out. Maybe they were worn down - don't know. But all it took was a few misses and two turnovers, plus a couple of big 3's from Pitt to extend a 5-point lead, and suddenly this one was over.

On another night, we might not be so lucky.

I like that it looks like we have 8 or 9 guys that can legit play.

I’m a little worried that we only really have one guy that I think can consistently take over. There were times last year where we looked pretty average until Blake hit 3 3’s in a row. Lowe can be that guy, but he doesn’t have the others.

We can still be a better team (or at least as good, while playing a more favorably NET schedule). But we have to put together good team efforts since we lost a couple stars.

For awhile last night it looked like Murray State was more athletic than Pitt and they were blowing past Pitts defenders for easy scores . Pitt played much better D in the last 10 minutes .

Europeans , not to be stereotypical , typically play a solid all around game . Looking forward to see what he brings to the table .

When I went to a practice three yrs ago I watched the twins drain 3 pointers like it was nothing and I envisioned a future where it would be impossible to stop an offense with 7 footers making NBA 3’s . It’s just not happening .

Dunn reminds me of Burton , which is a really good thing !

I agree with the Dunn and Burton comparison. He is always under control. Tough kid
I'm getting there on Dunn. We needed him last night and he produced. As for
Burton, he was so valuable in all aspects including leadership. If Dunn reaches
that level, we'll be even tougher in the backcourt than we already are.

Murray State is legit, in fact more legit than I expected. For a good part of the game
they were outplaying us. As has been pointed out, we stepped it up on D in the
second half and that led to the final result. I also thought they were very well coached
and it showed.

I mostly see a team with more competent guys than the last two seasons but less star power. I guess we'll see how that translates. We need to play Austin at the 4 when Delalic gets back. GDG at the 4 is something that should be reserved for slow white teams only... so Boston College and maybe Notre Dame, basically.

I think Ish can take over too.

Sometimes I would like Capel to have us try a zone defense. Not as our dominant defense, but as a change of pace against quicker teams. I think GDG would be at his best in maybe a 2-3 zone. He looks like a constant liability playing man. Anyway, maybe we just weren't going hard enough in the 1st half, but, they got way to many easy baskets.

Zach so far has been a really good weak side shot blocker who is fast and athletic enough to come out of nowhere and ambush a shooter. Austin can continue to be a strong one if he keeps improving. (Needs to work at keeping some of those blocks in play, as others have mentioned 🙂). But he can really elevate and extend!

Very interested to see this team with Delalic. How the minutes work, for him and others. What Amsal brings: on D - as a defender and rebounder; then on O - as a scorer; shooter; passer; ball handler; offensive board guy.

A lot of the difference was Jaland Lowe sitting on the bench with foul trouble versus Jaland Lowe being in the regular rotation and in the normal substitution pattern of the game. Lowe sat for seven minutes in the first half after picking up his second foul. We went from a 10 point lead when he picked up the foul to a one point deficit when we brought him back at the end of the half, when he then scored our last two baskets of the half and gave us the lead back.

So in the seven minutes he sat with foul trouble Pitt was -11 (or technically -9 after the foul shots). The other 33 minutes, when he was in his "normal" minutes rotation, Pitt was +26 (or 24).

Moral of the story, don't automatically sit Jaland Lowe for long stretches if he picks up a second foul in the first half.

By the way, if we had just made an average number of foul shots yesterday we would have scored, ah, hmmm, two more points than what we did. Gee, I thought it would have been, like, ten or something like that. It's almost as if foul shooting wasn't really that big a deal.

Missed free throws only mean something when they do
I think some of what Joe is suggesting is that free throws - as I always say - are not free. Often fans see that we missed 12 like last night, and think this is 12 points we should have had.

But a good foul shooting team hits 75% and had we hit that number last night it would have been 2-3 more points.

Another thing I see is that fans look as missed free throws as more problematic that say a missed layup.

I knew what Joe meant. My comment only applies when a game is much closer, score-wise, at the end of the game; when the opponent is fouling on purpose. I understand that 75% is a great "goal" to strive for on making foul shots. I get the most frustration from teams that miss the front end of a 1&1

Indeed about the front ends.

Austin going 27 minutes and 0-1 from 3 is what we need. It’s nice to not have to rely on his offense. Seriously, he is athletic and I honestly think made Fede look way better last year. I even recall a Fede highlight real including a play Austin actually made. Excited to see if Amsel can hit threes though. Corhen with rebounds and dunks, it was all I wanted out of Fede last year.

Also, there were some fan unhappiness with missed threes. In the end Pitt was 8 for 19 = 42.1% which is just fine.

Totally agree on the absence of Lowe, and the very obvious result on the floor.
This team simply has to have him on the floor. Leggett, Dunn, ( and hopefully
Cummings, some day) can all get the job done running the team. However
running the team at a rather basic level, and having Lowe out there is entirely
different matter. Your stats above more than prove this to be the case. Once
he became a starter last year, the same scenario occured, and that was with
Bub on the floor.

Your second point is interesting......."automatically" sitting with two fouls is now
the choice whereas years ago it was three fouls (yeah, I'm that old). IMO, Lowe
picks up his second foul in the first half, switch to a zone on D with him out
front instructing him not to reach, leave his feet trying to block a shot, and
no attempting any steals. What you lack out of him on D, is more than made
up on the offensive end. All coaches know this, yet sitting with two is now the
automatic norm. Just my two cents.
