Nelly Cummings carves up North Catholic

Simmie had issues, but I tell no lie he ate Elvin Hayes up Texas western vs. Houston. Then again Texas changed their name I think a few times.

Hill went to West Texas State (same school Mercury Morris played for), which is a different school then Texas Western (which is today's Texas-El Paso). West Texas State is now known as West Texas A&M.

Hank Kuzma put Midland on the map. He was part of the Chick Davies tree that had such an impact on basketball in the region. Even Billy Knight is a branch off of that tree, having played for Moe Becker, who starred under Davies at Duquesne. Locally, only the Pop Warner tree is more impressive (Jock Sutherland, Doc Carlson, John Michelosen, Ditka, Schottenheimer).

Ironic thing about Kuzma. That Midland team capped off its epic seson by routhing Steelton-HIghspire in the state final. Guess where Coach Kuzma was originally from. Steelton.

That is ironic. I guess he came this way to play college ball and stuck around. Looking at those two coaching trees is amazing. I might dig a little deeper during the boring days before Pitt football goes to camp and flush those lists out. I can only imagine how substantial the Pop Warner tree is. How many Pitt fans actually know that Doc Carlson played football under Warner, and was a teammate of Jock Sutherland on one of Pitt's greatest teams?

And guess who the most valuable player was in the Post Gazette Fab 5?

And?

You act as if people have trashed him. Nobody has. Clearly the kid can play some ball and I don't believe anyone here had disputed that. Give it a rest.

I've never seen a grown man dangle from a high school kid like you do. It's gotten creepy.

Right he might be an NEC/MAC level star player but maybe not ACC.

His only bigger offer was Temple.

I wish him well tho @ BG.

The only knock on the kid his his height. If he were 6'4 and the still 6th leading scorer in the history of the WPIAL, he'd have offers from everyone.

Both Indiana (Crean) and San Diego State (Fisher) had a lot of interest. Temple offered. Brandin Knight was down Midland's gym weekly. As I said, a few different people told me recruiting is like a game of chess. Especially with players like Nelly, who passes the eye test, but coaches can't get over the height. Knight said he wanted to offer Nelly to play for Pitt. This was last season. A day later, Dixon came down and watched practice for a few minutes. He went over to someone and asked how old Nelly was. After that, he left, and no offer came. Both Crean and Fisher had to be wondering why Pitt, who had this kid in their own backyard, wouldn't offer, so they backed off as well.

BK liked him cause he said Nelly reminded him alot of himself. Bowling Green had been great to him since the start, and it was close by so his family could watch, so he figured if BG was loyal to him, he'd return the favor.

I think Nelly could play for Pitt, unless he is like 30 yrs. Old !

speaking of the Fab 5, no wonder a great coach doesn't want to come here when the supposed best players in the area are D2 level

also 2 of those kids said phil jurkovec was the best player they played against, shouldn't he be on the Fab 5 instead of his teammate?

Cam J was thought to be a lower D1 recruit but look at him now.

His huge growth spurt from 6-2 to 6-8 within a year certianly helped tho lol...

I hear ya and understand your point. But basketball is different than football. You are only getting 2 to 5 kids a year for the most part, unlike football who has 20-25 kids a year. I don't think there is many top kids around Eugene Oregon. Spokane Washington. I won't go into the "bluebloods". But not many kids in Morgantown, WV. Or Charlottesville, Va. Ames, Iowa is not exactly a hotbed. My point here, Pittsburgh is not any more barren of talent than some of these small towns in the middle of nowhere and they can get kids. It is all about the coaches and who is recruiting and developing players.

Drax , if the kids what you say he'll do fine at Bowling Green , but you need to relax and let this play out . If he is the player you say it will be Pitts loss .

Pretty good prep programs near all those places .
(Okay maybe not Ames) .

But a fairly big distinction..(excluding Gonzaga) is those are state universities- so yes in state kids want to play at Oregon, Uva, and even Iowa state (which now that I think about does have a robust prep school- like Harrison Barnes- from Ames , nick collison, Kirk Heinrich)

huggins does a great job

I hear you. I'm relaxed, just was pointing out to a certain few that said early in the year, he wasn't the best player in Western Pa. Not many in Pitt's backyard, but when there is it would be nice to grab them and add the rest from wherever you deem necessary. Dixon used to just go to NY, Jersey, then to Philly. There are kids in a 100 mile radius that are very good, not many, but they're there if you want to recruit local. What the hell, Lebron , Akron. So, I'm done just stating what was on my mind although, I think the Dukes will kick Pitt's butt next year again.

Why didn't Duquesne recruit him?

He said he thought his team mate deserved the honor, so he'll get his turn next year. Nice Player.

Souf......you and I would make 3rd team All Oregon. And Iowa is the #1 school in Iowa, not ISU. It is about coaches and recruiting. Okay, on the flip side....Depaul in Chicago. Georgetown lately in DC. St Johns and Rutgers. in NYC/No Jersey. BC in Boston.

College BB is nowhere close to being as geographically important as football.
