He is smart, has good footwork, can pull from the Center position, gets to the second level, and is strong. He attended camp and the staff liked him. That's good enough for me.

Welcome to the Pitt family Owen. Hope he turns into a solid player but his offer list isn't exactly a who's who list in college football. I'm impressed with our defensive recruiting so far. Not so much on the off side of the ball.

All new Panthers are welcome as part of the family. I hope he has a great career. That doesn't change my opinion that we're not exactly knocking the ball out of the park on offensive recruiting.

We seem to be going after and getting a lot of players with IVY league offers..
A 6'4" 275 lb center who is strong and quick. We haven't had one like that in a long time. He will redshirt and let's see how it plays out in say 3 years. People are so quick to judge. You have been a good poster so this really isn't about you it is more about trusting the staff and not rushing to judgement.

zero judgment, I am last person to judge recruits... honestly think it's silly, have seen way too many 4 stars with FBS offers do nothing and seen many 2 stars come in and produce.. Speculating O-Linemen is even more of a crap-shoot.. My comment was not judgmental or with hidden meaning, if anything, I think it's a good thing..

I could care less about stars for the most part. but i do care what other p5, and other acc head coaches are doing. if 9 other acc coaches are recruiting the same kid, this is some validation that kid has some game. nothing is 100% but more times than not, the coaches know a hell of a lot more than some clown who hands out stars. coaches have real skin in the game.

I don't really care how many stars a player has or his offer list, that means nothing, all I care about is that we have coaches that can get the best out of these kids

We shouldn't worry about stars and offer sheets with Camp Offers since they aren't desperation offers but based on what coaches see and like. Pretty much guaranteed that coaches in their minds see at least a 3-star level player if they extend a camp offer.

Weak offer sheets and low star recruits aren't problematic unless a number of these commit between the end of HS FB season and LOI day. Those are the ones to be worried about because they indicate coaches are filling slots because they were unable to find anyone better. That is not the case in June.

Doesn't bother me. Such kids breeze through the admissions office, and aren't at risk for washing out of the classroom before they can produce anything on the field.

once again, i was stating this as a positive, not a negative..

What % of the kids that commit to Pitt do the coaches like?

What % of the kids that commit to Pitt actually finish at Pitt and have an positive impact on Pitt football?

I'm pretty sure that the answer to the first question is 90% or higher. I'm willing to bet that the answer to the bottom question is about 50%.

So knowing that, why do people say, good enough for our coach, so good enough for me. As if the people who consider all variables like stars, measurables, other offers etc can't posibly match the accuracy of the Pitt coaching staff.

I don't get this line of thinking...

I would take a team of all 4/5* players against a team of 2/3* everyday.

Sure the 2/3* will have some studs, but the 4/5* will have more.

Don't forget we are talking June offers. Stars and offer sheets change between now and December mostly for the better.

You are troubled that people trust Pat Narduzzi and his staff's ability to evaluate talent for his system better than your ability to do so?

I don't consider myself solely or heavily in one group or the other.. The "trust the staff" group. or even the "trust the stars" or the sub group of "trust the offers" group.. I think all groups make sense but don't believe 100% in any of them, have seen too many exceptions to blindly be in one.. So with that little preface there, I will say that I do feel a tad more confident with an "under the radar" recruit who just camped with us, or the staff just saw "work out" and then offered.. I guess that falls under the "trust the coaches" group but if they just saw what they liked, there is something there so it makes me feel a tad bit better than just a typical Option D or F type recruit, 2 star kid that we signed because our first 5 options went elsewhere..

I'm troubled that people blow off other people's opinions just because Narduzzi offered them. Narduzzi will never be 100% right, so we shouldn't look down upon people who question why a kid was offered. As Swervin said above, there is no golden formula or opinion.

I will take narduzzi's opinion over yours any day of the week to be honest......and that goes with any coach

And any poster. These coaches work with the players, watch actual film instead of a recruits highlight reel, talk to their high school coaches. I'm as big of a know it all fan as the next guy, but I'm not spending 60 hours a week doing this as my paid profession and I understand the difference.

I will no doubt trust coach Nard's opinion on defensive players. Since he has a proven track record of being extremely successful.

However, on offense it is a completely different story. I will trust the coaches who have successful programs that are offering kids on that side of the ball.

My point is the more successful programs recruiting offensive players we are bringing in. The better!

Its the same as when Chryst was coaching. I trusted his opinion on Oline and RBs.

Not on defense. Which we all found out he was a complete dud on the defensive side of the ball.

agreed shere.

OL recruiting is a huge crap shoot.

First off, most kids get very little good coaching. The biggest kids play line and that's that. Second, if the school has a terrible weight room, the kids really need the time in a college weight room to develop.

If those two things are true, then you look at how the kid approaches the game. What kind of football player is he?

To be honest, stars and offers probably mean the least for OL-men. More about what you can do with them when they get on campus. Unlearning bad habits and learning how to play the college game.

This is 100 percent wrong. Not trying to be a dick.

Look at all the best offensive lineman Pitt has had over the last 7 or 8 years.

Nix, Pinkston, Clemmons , Otah , Thomas , Malecki, Biz , Johnson , JJS , Officer and i am probably forgetting a few. All of these guys have made it to the league or at least made all conference.

What do they have in common? All of them had very good offer sheets.
Now looking at kids who did not. Only Oneil (a converted TE) has a chance to make the league or at least a all conference type player.

So its a complete myth and factually incorrect to say offers does not matter when it comes olineman.

The facts simply don't back that up

Do you guys want to hear a cool stat?? according to rivals, Ohio state has signed just as many 4 and 5 star Offensive linemen in the '16 and '17 class as pitt has signed in 15 years..

That's scary.

OSU's whole team and the talent they get is friggen ridiculous. I remember the days Pitt was bringing in classes like that

Using this logic, I'd reach the exact opposite conclusion if I were looking at PSU over the last 7 or 8 years though.
