Going back through the data base here is the breakdown of this years 1st Round Picks:

5-Stars (5)

4-Stars (15)

3-Stars (8)

2-Stars (1)

Not Ranked-(2)

65% of the guys drafted in the 1st round were 4 star or better

Stars Matter

Plus the stars aren't distributed evenly. There were only 33 five star guys in the most recent 2016 rivals recruiting class. 355 four star guys. Compare that to over 1200 three star recruits and over 2000 two star recruits. That fact that 65% of the first round comes from under 15% of all recruits with at least two stars is pretty solid evidence.

*I'm making an assumption that the 2016 distribution is roughly the same every year.

With that being said... a coach who can recognize talent among the many three star players can definitely build a winning team.

I get that there are about 400 kids a year that are "superior" talent in high school. But I'd be more interested to see how many of those "big time" players don't get drafted.

But that's not the point when you're building a college football program. Finding that other third that nobody thinks are special is the real trick.
