Nutting proves again how cheap he is. Cuts Rowdy 4 plate appearances away from a bonus.

Honestly, in terms of cheap moves by Pirates, I would have rather have seen them shut Skenes down early enough so that he wouldn't be in the top 2 of NL rookie of year voting, so that they would get him for another season. But they really thought they had a chance this year. How delusional.

That's such a crazy, random rule to begin with.

There are a lot of reasons. He was good enough to be on the roster all season but they cut him a couple days short of the end of the year for what amounts to pocket change for the owner. Would you risk your reputation over a ten bucks? Would you be cool if your boss shorted you on what would amount to a 6% bonus? Don't get me wrong, I know where you're coming from but it's a garbage move by a billionaire owner that damages the perception of the club.

What's baffling is that there are plenty of fans that are so enamored with stadium backdrops and fireworks that they just keep on showing up. They haven't won their division in over thirty years and have only managed a winning record four times. Even when they won there wasn't any effort to improve the team for the playoffs. "Can't risk ruining the future!" Such BS for a club that's doing just enough to average 75 wins and keep the suckers on the hook.

Most of the people I see on TV at Pirate games seem to have something clinically wrong with them. Like, they're not as obnoxious as the NFL Draft attendees, but there is definitely some People of Walmart running through many of their veins.

They don't even grace my television so I'll have to take your words for it. The whole "Woooo" thing....come on.

They did it to keep teams from keeping their best rookies in the minors for a couple weeks at the beginning of the season. They also incentivize the team to not do that by giving teams an extra draft pick at the end of the first round if their highly rated prospect wins the ROY and was on the roster for basically all season. For example, last year's RsOY were Gunnar Henderson of Baltimore and Corbin Carroll of the D-Bags. Because they were both on the roster all season long, the Bags got an extra pick at 31 overall and the Orioles got the 32nd overall pick.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, they didn't really keep Skenes down to preserve a year of service time, but because he was not up with the team until late May the Pirates will not get a draft pick if he does win ROY, but Skenes will get his full year of service time.

If it wasn't a factor, I suppose they could pay him the bonus anyway, like any good employer would do.

Let me know when they cut the check.

They should transfer the stadium debt to Nutting. Figure out a way to make that POS pay for it.
THIS! If the money wasn’t a factor, pay the man!

Can’t disagree with anybody saying it’s a garbage move by the owner, but after all these years, does anybody really expect anything less from him?

People keep saying this is a short sighted move. "Free agents won't want to sign here!!!" Exactly!! Nutting is playing chess while you plebs think in checkers. If no free agents want to sign here he can spend even less money on salaries!

I dont really know why people get bent out of shape about stuff like this. It is different if the guy had an amazing year. When players dont play that well, and get cut before a bonus... ummm... ok... good. Why should the Pirates pay an extra 200k just because it is in his contract? Maybe dont make a deal like that then?
You think if you worked for <insert big company here> and you had an escalation clause in a contract and you were not performing well, they would let you go. Your coworkers probably would be happy the company is thinking fiscally responsibly. I doubt they would complain the company is cheap. Maybe some would... yet when the Pirates do this, it is awful and a terrible thing.
Who we should ACTUALLY be upset about is Cherrington actually signing all these lame free agents. Id much rather sign one very good free agent than sign Tellez, Perez, Grandhal, Taylor, and all the rest. I certainly dont mind we cut the poor guy who made 3 mil batting like .238

I would argue by that logic then he should have been cut in may when he absolutely was one of the worst position players in the league

Well, I would argue that too.

As a business, you already paid x amount for the guy. You shouldnt cut in May and lose all the money invested. Try to get some value out of him. Now the one really puzzling thing is, why didnt we trade him for "cash" or whatever to anyone. I guess the answer is no one wanted him at all, but I hope we dont make this mistake again.
