Just wanted to get a discussion going on the WPIAL, or other district playoffs which eventually turns into the state playoffs.
Penn Live's latest rankings
AAAA
1. Allderdice
9. Latrobe
Honorable Mention - Chartiers Valley,Penn Hills, Bethel Park, Plum, Pine Richland, Gateway, Baldwin, Central Catholic.
Latrobe-Mount Lebo, Gateway-Bethel Park, Char Valley-Hempfield, North Hills-Baldwin all play on Wednesday in the first round. Central Catholic/Pine Richland and Plum/Penn Hills have already punched their ticket to the second round.
Allderidce should roll in the City, I can't seem to find a bracket online for that.
Hard to say what will happen in the WPIAL here, seems like a lot of so-so teams, nobody stands out to me.
AAA
3. New Castle
4. Beaver Falls
8. Mars
Honorable Mention WPIAL - Steel Valley
Western PA Non-WPIAL - Clearfield, Girard, Meadville, Hollidaysburg, Somerset, General McLane, Strong Vincent, Cathedral Prep
Tuesday's WPIAL first round
New Castle-Montour
West Allegheny-Ambridge
Highlands-Trinity
Hampton-Central Valley
Beaver Falls - Thomas Jefferson
Indiana-West Mifflin
Mars-Laurel Highlands
Steel Valley-South Fayette.
As far as WPIAL goes, I think Mars is the team despite them being ranked lower than New Castle and Beaver Falls. Mars hung with Allderdice better than New Castle, and New Castle seemed to handle Beaver Falls this year. Beyond those 3 teams though, there seems to be a big dropoff.
Outside the WPIAL, I bet Erie Strong Vincent could become a factor.
AA
1. Aliquippa
2. Lincoln Park
3. Greensburg Central Catholic
7. West Branch (D6)
9. Quaker Valley
Honorable Mention WPIAL - Neshannock, Laurel, Bishop Canevin, OLSH, Avonworth, Seton LaSalle
Western PA Non-WPIAL - Bellwood-Antis, Penns Valley, Cambridge Springs, Greenville, West Middlesex, Fairview
Tuesday's first round
Aliquippa-East Allegheny
Washington-Laurel
GCC - Chartiers Houston
OLSH - Seton LaSalle
Lincoln Park - Shady Side
Avonworth-Neshannock
Quaker Valley-Wilkinsburg
Bishop Canevin-Brownsville
I really see Aliquippa and Lincoln Park playing for the WPIAL Championship, and also meeting in the Western Final as well. I don't see any stiff competition from Districts 5,6,9, and nobody serious from 10 either. Greensburg Central might be able to throw a wrench in things.
A
1. Kennedy Catholic (D10)
2. Monessen
3. Farrell (D10)
5. Elk County Catholic (D9)
6. Sewickley Academy
8. Homer Center (D6)
Honorable Mention WPIAL - Eden Christian, Jeannette, Vincentian
Western PA Non WPIAL - Clarion Limestone, Coudersport, Ridgway, Ferndale, McConnellsburg, Saltsburg, Southern Fulton, Portage
Tuesday's first round
Monessen-Leechburg
Union-California
Sewickley-Springdale
Vincentian-West Greene
(North Catholic/Clairton, and Eden Christian/Jeannette already advanced to the second round)
Monessen should really handle the WPIAL competition, they are a legit team. Obviously Jeannette and Sewickley are teams that could make some noise too.
But as far as the West goes, it's really a Kennedy Catholic-Farrell showdown. I think Monessen is a step below there.
