On another note...the band looked terrific.

I mean it. They have steadily improved the last 2 years. Congrats to the Band Director and members.
Indeed, they were terrific! Their tribute to the Armed Forces, where their formation outlined the USA and the flags of each branch were displayed was memorable.

I think the band HAS been better in recent years, actually!

And while kudos are being tossed about, nice jobs with the tributes to the service people ...

I really didn't notice any significant greatness with the ballyhooed new scoreboard though. A few more stats on each side of the picture than before, maybe. But I felt like they should have extended the action to fill the whole screen and really take advantage of it.

I totally agree with this. if they have to have stats all game long, keep it to one side only.

That's good to hear the band is kicking it...I'm actually working as percussion instructor down here in GA and have incorporated some revamped Pitt drumline stuff into their warmups.

Haters of band can go eff themselves... yes I'm totally serious

But a band being good is definitely better than nothing being good, sports related at the school.

It would take a pretty miserable person to be a hater of a marching band. Thats a big part of the college/high school gameday atmosphere.

My only gripe is that I'm not a fan of the troll bands like Stanford or UVA have been known for from time to time.

I also think a shout should go out to Jimmy Morrissey who seemingly was fault - free with his center snaps.

Winslow punts were really good too, high, deep, well angled (nevermind we shouldn't have ever needed him).

And while i didn't imbibe yesterday it appeared they now sell yuengling pounder cans and allow patrons to take them to the seats? No more juggling open plastic cups...and of bud light at that...

On that note, I attended a UVA game, late 80s, when they were playing WVU.

The halftime show was a spoof of a shotgun wedding between a brother and sister.

The state of WV got so upset that the Governor and school President requested an apology.

Yes, why would one hate on marching bands? I do understand being ambivalent about them as I tend in that direction but why hurt the feelings of those who enjoy watching marching bands?

I won't say I'm John Philip Sousaphone or whoever but the marching band (and cheerleaders, mascot, alma mater, student section etc) is one of the great things that distinguishes this activity from just being the NFL AAA level that it actually is in every other sense.

There was also very little music played at the game over the speakers and a lot from both marching bands. Well done to the game day staff to allow the bands to make the atmosphere.

I CAN'T like this observation enough if I liked it a million times! My ears thank whoever cut back on the overamplified "music"!

They are really good. Mrs Buffett and I stay in our seats to watch the band at half + the PITT Dance Team is entertaining as well! It's the right thing to do!
The students carrying the PITT flags are fun to watch since its always windy at Heinz.

Last season we sat with some PITT band parents while eating breakfast at our Northshore hotel and were shocked to learn the band kids get no schlorships? They put in a lot of time and travel which the parents confirmed.

Our kids went to a HS that had a band that went to competitions and it was serious stuff for the band kids. Lots were trying to get schlorships to colleges not sure where?

The lack of music through the sound system being replaced by the band didnt exactly help improve the atmosphere. Only times anyone's (fans or players) heads were bobbing to the beat was the few times they played newer rap/hip hop songs with beats or even Fall Out Boys War Paint video. Was definitely noticeably more quiet with less music to entertain or pump up things.

Agree completely.
I don't drink at the games but I'm glad they are selling beer. Student section was great first half.
The game day experience has gotten better.

I agree. It was a respectable half time show.

In another thread, I was also complimentary toward the Pitt Dance Team. Not that their conditioning was ever bad, but yesterday they looked exceptionally good.

Funny, I thought it got the most noticeably quiet WHEN THE TEAM BEGAN TO STINK UP THE JOINT. And weirdly it was at its most rocking WHEN THE TEAM WAS SCORING OR MAKING IMPRESSIVE PLAYS.

Solutions to 'problems' really don't have to be complicated...

Those are given points though when that happens, but there are a lot of dead points during football games. Its the reason why for the NFL during time outs, commercials, etc they play music through the scoreboard.
