Oregon fires Helfrich

Penn state had been working to get him extended because they worried Oregon would come caliing

Isn't Phil Knight a Penn State guy? Or did he speak at Paterno's service just because of his ties to Nike?

Names being thrown about also include McElwain, Mullen, Fedora, and Holgerson. McElwain surprised me but I guess there was an AD change there and he is from Washington.

Because of Nike. Phil Knight is an Oregon guy.

Penn State and Nike have many ties, which is why Phil Knight spoke at Paterno's service. Penn State was the first major program to be sponsored by Nike. PSU and Oregon are the only "test" schools for new Nike equipment that has not been released yet. The current CEO of Nike is as Penn State grad.

Don't see Franklin going anywhere unless he's desperate to get out of the shadow of Paterno. The other names are pretty compelling. I don't see Oregon hiring Holgy. Could do worse though. I do see Fedora either for some reason. Eh... Who knows? Definitely a very, very good gig with so much at your disposal if you're HC.

Isn't that an odd couple. One school has uni's that makes you think they would come out of the tunnel wearing leather helmets if they could, while the other has a zillion combinations and constantly tries to push the envelope.

I'm not sure which is which, since the plain thing about ped states IS the all white helmet. But Franklin is definitely the type that would like flashy. Since you lived down in Nashville you know how he had all the uniform combos at vandy

True dat. Hey, if you're at a place where you can't win big, at least look nice.

How about Derek Mason turning the season around down in Music City?! ANCHOR DOWN!!!

To be honest, he did make Vandy look better... the previous uniforms were just awful

They kicked the VOLS ass I know that. I didn't care for Vandy's helmets Saturday night but I like the more traditional looks but the unis weren't bad

I absolutely could see Franklin leaving only because he has to battle tOSU, UM and MSU every single year. That's not very tempting. Having said that IF he was offered it would crack me up given his resume at PSU. Talk about mind boggling. Since when has he become the next big thing??

i said yesterday it was only a matter of time before oregon makes a change. will be interesting to see who they end up with. they got big time nike money, but its in oregon. would look for somebody with connections in the west. i mentioned fleck yesterday, it would be somewhat of a gamble but that guy is a winner and he's going to end up at a big time school sooner than later.

Franklin just beat 2 of the 3 teams that should cause him to give up and to leave Penn State.. OSU and MSU...they had one loss in the Big10 this year. Did you know that Pitt-girl?

I am glad jimmy franks had a good run beating mediocre teams mostly at home so now he will be back in creepy valley next season. That is a relief!

That and getting out of State College which isn't a booming metropolis or a destination place.
Remember Paterno was there 60 something years. It takes a special kind of person to want to stay there. I think Franklin is using the Nitter job as a stepping stone to something different and better.

i do wonder if holgy gets a shot there. don't think he would be the first choice. i think they would take fleck before holgy.

Just saw Navy Coach might be a candidate and Greg Schiano why I have no idea. Phil Knight didn't care for how PSU treated JoePa so if he could put the screws to PSU he just might.

I can't see Franklin leaving for Oregon it just doesn't make sense for him. He spent two years out west in his life. He grew up in Pennsylvania, went to East Stroudsburg why leave PSU? Harbaugh will be gone in the next two years and we know Urban will bail sooner than later that is his style. I think this is all talk no substance.

Most definitely not true. Ohio State and Michigan are at worst #2 and 3 behind Oregon and Ohio State may be #1 at this point with the relationship with LeBron James.

Conveniently for PSU, MSU is not good this year and OSU has been up and down in their games. And Michigan beat both of the teams in the Big Ten playoff-so ?????????

What part is not true? Sounds like you are talking contract value which yes, OSU and Michigan's are higher because both have just been redone in the last few years and are both currently higher than Oregon's. Overall contract value is tough to really compare school to school as each contract has unique terms relative to number of varsity sports and length of the contract. Oregon's money does not come their Nike contract. It comes from a very large booster, ie Phil Knight.

Mark Parker is the CEO of Nike. PSU class of 77.

When you fire a coach that had you in the National Championship game just two years ago, you better damn believe they are going to use the deep pockets of Phil Knight to make a big hire.

I'd be very surprised if they took a flyer on a PJ Fleck or even a Bryan Harsin. I'd suspect they will end up paying in the $5/6MM+ zone. That will get them just about any coach they want save for Saban, Harbaugh, or Meyer.

I was surprised that this was the first Oregon football coach fired in the last 40 years. The last three coaches dating back to 1977: Rich Brooks left for the NFL, Belloti retired and Kelly left for the NFL.

No, I am talking about being the Nike #2 with test/limited/pre-release gear. In fact, OSU just got special Lebron cleats for them game that are brand new and never done. OSU (and Michigan) has jumped far ahead of PSU in the Nike pecking order, not just in contract value.

And MSU has had a very down year, yes? Hey, honestly, I would prefer Franklin stays at PSU.

The quote about the test schools is from a former PSU player so it could be incorrect. It makes sense that OSU would be the only school to wear the Lebron shoes as I assume they were specifically made for them. The test school products seem to be more generalized gear not specific products for specific programs.

The thought probably is that Helfrich coasted on the success of prior coaches and was in danger of doing serious damage if left at the helm. Make the right move and they can be back in the top 20 again next year.

This is the quote: Zugg "believed Penn State and Oregon, a.k.a. “Nike University,” were the only two test schools in football."

He believed. The reality is they test things with many schools and Ohio State (and Michigan with jumpman) has stepped to the forefront with Nike branding. Both are far ahead of PSU.

I am not sure where you are taking this. I was never arguing that PSU had a more valuable brand than Michigan or OSU. Michigan and OSU are schools with a national brand and thus much more valuable in a dollar sense to Nike. PSU's brand is really only relevant in the northeast. Being a test school for Nike does not mean that your brand is bigger than another school. PSU is important to Nike because there were the first major college football program to wear Nike shoes (1981/1982) and Phil Knight never forgot that. In the early 80's, Nike was a nobody in the footwear industry so to have any program wearing their shoes was a big deal for them.

Things certainly could have changed since GZ played but he knows his stuff and is still pretty well connected with the program.

By branding, I am specifically talking to Nike branding their test/exclusive/new offerings to Ohio State and Ohio State only. It is a huge win for both parties and the influence and popularity of LBJ helps fuel it.

Here is an interesting article touching on that.
