I think if that were the case, Pittsburghers would follow one of the Sheffield clubs because I believe Sheffield is the Pittsburgh of the UK. People seem to all choose a club based on which club is making the most noise at the time the person decides to follow the sport. People are often front runners. For me, I’ve always had a soft spot for the up and coming team chasing the top dog. So when I started following, Manchester United was winning trophies and Chelsea was chasing. I liked Chelsea’s players and uniforms so Chelsea became my club. Now one of those players I loved is the current Manager and it’s a real struggle to watch. I’m fearful for his job.Question, since you seem to know a lot about soccer and I am completely ignorant on the subject: when Americans choose a team to follow overseas, do people from a certain geographic area tend to follow a certain team? For example, does Pittsburgh have a sister city overseas that people tend to gravitate towards?
I’ve never really overseas soccer in part because I’d have no idea where to start in regards to following a team or league. Always found it interesting.
It's a Socialist sport.![]()
A sport for Socialists then. LOLI wished. Its too top-heavy because Europe likes its sports super-capitalistic while the USA likes socialist pro sports. Its really odd.
European soccer and College Football are probably the closest in terms of overall competitiveness. The rich get richer.
Yeah. It’s like baseball with the inequities. The pirates are baseballs Sheffield United, and if baseball had relegation, the Pirates would be in the 2nd division where they belong.A sport for Socialists then. LOL
Nutting would be in favor of relegation because he’d get to spend less money... until he found out that he’d also be making less money!Yeah. It’s like baseball with the inequities. I chose to be a Supporter of Liverpool(way before they got Jurgen Klopp as Manager and doing great), for the Stupid Reason, that I love Echo & the Bunnymen, and they are from Liverpool(and I also like the Red & Yellow Color Combination). Then again, I like more Music Artists from Manchester(although had lost interest in Oasis over time, still love The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Magazine Joy Division/New Order, James, The Verve and especially Doves and Elbow.Question, since you seem to know a lot about soccer and I am completely ignorant on the subject: when Americans choose a team to follow overseas, do people from a certain geographic area tend to follow a certain team? Hence, I'm a Fulham supporter. The 1st reason is their American friendly attitude going back to McBride and Bocanegra days. With each passing year though there are complete similarities to between being a Fulham supporter and Pitt fan.and in soccer, the finances are similar to MLB. There are the big clubs and then everyone else. So if you don’t pick one of the big clubs to support, you’ll have a long and frustrating time following the sport. Kinda like we are with Pitt football.

Lol. I almost used Fulham as a comparison to the Pirates. But being a London based team, I instead used Sheffield United because they literally are a steel town club and fighting relegation.Hence, I'm a Fulham supporter. It's tough being a Fulham fan especially post relegation. They were always a mid table team but after that nasty relegation season in 14 things got bad with the ownership sale to Shahid Kahn who also owns that Jaguars...then he appoints his son who knows not much about the game to a key position in the club, essentially in charge of who they bring in during transfer windows.I tried to make myself a Fulham fan for many of the same reasons. I just couldn't identify with any of the blue bloods. But it was hard and it didn't last. I wished I could magically have a favorite EPL team but I don't. I don't know how anyone can pick a random EPL to like and then actually care if they win or lose.
For me...I have my club, and while it’s tough to be a fan sometimes (especially right now), I can’t see supporting anyone else. Fandom is so bizarre to me. I know a couple guys who can switch clubs, and I don’t understand it. I think it has something to do with supporting players more so than supporting the club. I just know that personally I’m Chelsea for life and I can’t imagine how it would change. Oddly, I do like Tottenham right now, because José Mourinho is the manager and I will always have an affection for him. The problem is they are rivals with Chelsea. I should be rooting against them when they aren’t playing Chelsea, but I want José to succeed. And the club also has American ownership, although that’s becoming commonplace these days. Even Burnley had a takeover last week by Americans. I believe that at least 1/3rd of the EPL clubs are American owned.I tried to make myself a Fulham fan for many of the same reasons. The pirates would be in League 1 or 2 right now. As long as Nutting could find a way to make money down there, he wouldn't sell. He's such an absolute piece of crap.Lol. regarding Nutting and the Pirates, I almost feel like they would be a club that gets relegated, and then the purse strings get pulled even tighter, and then before long, they’d be relegated down to League 1 (3rd division).
Interesting. I want Fulham to succeed because they would be Chelsea’s most natural rival given that Chelsea actually resides in Fulham. My daughter is in England for grad school and she toured Stamford Bridge a couple months ago. I told her that she had to head over to Craven Cottage to check it out...but it didn’t fit into her schedule when she was in London. Her school is in the northeast and New Castle would be her closest club. I guess Craven Cottage is being renovated. I doubt they take all the old character away from the place but who knows. The pirates would be in League 1 or 2 right now. Fulham I find more of a Pitt comparison. Absolute bad luck at times, dumb decisions that cost games, poor front office decisions. They were absolutely maddening in the Championship. Easily top talent but in their 2 promotions campaigns lost games they shouldn't, drew games they shouldn't and had chances to seize a top 2 spot and automatic promotion and refused to do so.
I do thought really enjoy following them because their fanbase is so unique and the ground is a small little palace which I very much look forward to seeing matches in soon. Plus they're one of London's original and first organized football clubs and the oldest club playing professional football.
Kinda odd with your Chelsea boys...I only see the Blues as a slight rival. I much more enjoyed the banter back and forth with QPR and Brentford when we were in the Championship. FFC and Brentford is pure hate.
Craven Cottage is being upgraded. They're redoing the Riverside Stand. The other stands will remain unchanged and the Pavillion/Little Switzerland will remain unchanged. Total seating will be 30,000. What is unique about Craven is their is no "designated" away section. They do generally have half of the Putney End but there are no stewards or empty seats the separate Fulham fans and away travelers.Interesting.
