OT... Bakeries...

In the south Pastries ala Carte, Signiture Deserts, Bethel Bakery all are very good and have specific specialties.

Gaby et Jules in Squirrel Hill. My god, I just go in there to look around and take food porn pictures and I come out 3 lbs heavier without eating anything.

I think most of Oakmont Bakery's cookies taste like they came from a factory productions line. They stuff them in those clear plastic clams shells and stack them on wire shelves for who knows how long. The cakes are much better...great butter cream icing. Some things are good but they're turning into a factory. Donuts are just like everyone else.
There is a great bakery on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield near West Penn Hsp

Anyone have their favorite ?

What sparked my interest, went to Moio's in Monroeville and really disappointed. I had two brownies, maybe 2"x 2.5" each and $5.50...

Your problem with Moio's is that you bought brownies instead of a almond tort, cannoli, Neapolitan and other Italian pastries. That is their staple not brownies.

Oakmont is good I like it but I think it's overrated as I was expecting it to be better with how much i hear about it. Bethel is not just overrated i would say it is horrible. The Party Cake in Brookline is good and Bartram in Peters is good. Kribels' in Brookline used to be the best. Their Neapolitan was to die for.

Paddy cake forgot all about them. Sad part is that is where my wedding cake came from.

Moio's rum cakes are outstanding.

Prantl's burnt almond tort is the best around, although I will say Giant Eagle makes a solid one for a chain grocery store.

I concur with Mancini and Breadworks for bread, but recruits mentioning Mazziotti reminds me that they have that outstanding crusty/rustic bread made for dipping in sauces or olive oil.

Harvest Valley farms pies very good.

Oakmont pretty solid all around.

True. I've heard about Oakmont bakery for years; have never been, nor ever had anything from there.

Likewise I've heard of this great bakery in Pleasant Hills for cookies? I didn't even bother to file the name in my mind. May as well be in Atlanta.

I told a coworker from south west of the city, about Soergels in Wexford for pies. She gave a look like I suggested she go Toronto for them.
She probably has no passport.

Ugh. No way! You know those apricot cookies/pastries that were so awesome growing up? At least in my youth, they were the best. I bought a tray of them at Market Dostrict this Christmas and they were awful. No taste whatsoever!!

Those are my favorite cookies. My Mom would bake those for the holidays. Wish I Knew were to go around the burg for them now.

For something different try La Gourmandine. Mt Lebo, and Pittsburgh. Excellent french bread and pastries.

There is a bakery supply store in the North Hills called Make a Cake. They have a freezer full of pre-made cookies that all you have to do is bake. They usually have the apricot, cheese and raspberry versions of those cookies. They are delicious and great around the holidays because you can just pop them in the oven right before you need them.

They don't have an official website but here is a link to their yelp reviews.

I had dvr’d it from TMC-W

Thanks for the rec. Searched for it and set to record on Wednesday night. Love David Mamet films.

Someone got me a cookie tray as a gift from Oakmont and they were fantastic. Lincoln Bakery is good as well.
Oakmont bakery without a doubt best by a mile. Also Keystone Bakery in Monessen.

Prantls Shadyside. Burnt almond torte. Could live on eating that stuff (wouldn't be living for long though... but what a way to go).

Soergels (in Wexford) for pies.

Breadworks for bread.
Soergels are frozen and bought from Mrs. Smith. That’s what I heard. But they are good.

Paddy Cake in Bloomfield has great cookies
Prantl's almond tort is unbeatable
Oakmont lives up the to accolades.
If you are a big fan of chocolate buttercream icing like me, Potomac Bakery's version can't be beat.

What do you guys think of those tiny donuts? I forget the name, but the office hipsters love them for some reason.

Ya that's the name.
I'm not a fan either.
They're good. Not quite worth the premium or special trip, just for donuts. But good.

The owner had some hot water trying to avoid taxes or something. But I think he got duly nailed for it.

He's also of a conservative political bent, from what I read. So that likely bothers some here. How dare he appropriate a progressive name for his business, lol.
So for those not familiar, they're likely dismissing the place solely for that reason, keeping with the ridiculous extremism today. So be it, but the donuts, like chick fil a sandwiches and ben and Jerry ice cream, etc, are good. If you can get past the unhingedness of it all of course. Myself, I care about politics but i have priorities! I can enjoy good donuts made by a tax evading right-winger, just as I can enjoy a good pint of ice cream (or 3) even if Steven Colbert's picture is on the carton, lol.

I am just not that into donuts.

And I am tried of people (especially Conservative) political views affecting how and who people want to be do business with. Let's stop letting the media divide us, and agree that we can all disagree on somethings?

Oakmont Bakery....extremely over-rated. Also Enrico's Biscotti is over-rated. Moio's is way better than both.

The French bakeries that have been popping up are very good..

Enrico biscotti.... anyone see the movie about the place featuring Scott Baio ? I think "wedding for my Bella" ?

The story is based off of my Wife's side of the family that lived in the Strip...... Jemma and Sergio...

Really enjoyed that movie.

We like stopping in for breakfast or lunch at Enrico's. One of these days I'm going to sign up for one of their bread making classes.
