Actually there is a system that could fix it pretty easy. P5 champs get a autobid. Best G5 school gets a bid with 2 at large spots. That fixes the playoff completely

What happens if Bama and Georgia both win....oh...wait! As far as bowl season don't forget that the #1 SEC team in the regular bowls was actually #3 because the SEC had 2 teams in the playoffs. #2 was actually #4 and so on. That could partially explain some of the losses. As an example you can't be sure Scott Frost's team would have beaten Georgia.

In the BCS era, (1998-2013), the SEC went 9 - 2 in national title games. No other conference had more than 2 wins. In fact, the SEC had more national title wins than every other conference combined.

In the playoff era, they will have won 2 of 4.

And they didn't just do it with one dominant team. The following SEC teams have won a national title since the BCS started: Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, and LSU. If Georgia manages the upset, they'll the sixth SEC team to win a national title in a period where no other conference has had more than two winners.

Even the two teams that have maybe been the best lately outside of the SEC were Florida State and Clemson -- arguably the most "SEC-like" schools outside of that conference.

The SEC has definitely done itself a smart favor by only having 8 conference games instead of 9, costing themselves some revenue in favor of more wins, which they can do being so wealthy with big fan bases and a great TV contract. But I think the main reason they've won so much is its the only conference geographically placed that can really recruit Texas, the delta, Florida, and metro Atlanta. That's a huge percentage of NFL players.

Alabama's Strength of Schedule rank via RPI is #29. Georgia's is #7. Those are entirely respectable schedules.

Pitt's is a totally average #46 by the way, not nearly as impossible as some people make it sound around here. UCF's is #47 interestingly enough, which shows you can go undefeated but if you don't have some real opponents during the regular season, the committee will hold it against you.

This would make the sport LEGIT, there would be an actual path for every D1 team to get in by winning games, and the beauty contest would be limited to the 2 wild cards, so F the #3 loser who didn't win their division or get a wild card, their feelings don't matter, and it doesn't matter if they are subjectively considered "better" than any of the conference CHAMPIONS. ON THE FIELD Championships should mean more than the OPINIONS and SUBJECTIVE analysis of committees.

My whole thing is I don't want the subjective best 4 teams, I want a defined, objective process like every other sport has- like win this league, this division, this game and you are in, even if people don't think you deserve it, if the subjective "best" teams get knocked out early, that's part of the fun, some underdog coming out of nowhere and qualifying, that's part of the fun. The way it is now, 100+ teams are officially eliminated before training camp starts, and every year it's the same teams again and again. I don't care if they are the best, I want more teams, including Pitt to have a shot-just a shot, champion has nothing to do with best team, it has to do with winning when it counts. We are competing with just about every D1 program for the crumbs in Florida. Once in a while there’s a hidden gem. Meat Curtain acts like Pitt coaches are the Ponce De Leon of college football, discovering the bubbling fountain of Florida football talent. Looks like everyone else took care of pointing out your stupidity, though. I will say, bowl wins by conference is a really dumb way to judge conference strength. Two years ago the SEC went 9-2 in bowl games with a National Championship, but the conference wasn't great that year. They just won some matchups.

I suppose then one could also argue that Clemson wasn’t one or the four best teams, since they lost to lowly Syracuse and only had to beat a questionable Miami team for their conference championship.

This is an endless argument, but the part of it that makes no sense to me is this notion of favoring a conference champ over an obviously better team with a stronger resume. Like the clown in another thread who argued to the death that USC, ND and OSU somehow deserved to be in the playoff over Bama on the basis of “merit”. Well, don’t blowout regular season losses, especially to unranked opponents, affect “merit”?

I am not going to change your mind, but again, one could argue that Bama got in based on merit. They didn't earn their conference title. Rarely does a great NFL team go undefeated...I think it only happened once. The best team can have a bad day.

Look, I give them credit for trying to improve the championship with a 4 game playoff, but it is still based on some bias. Taking the champs remove that. And, if you truly are the best team, win your damn conference. Not a hard concept.
