Just wondering if any locals went this year and how it went...

I hope the city makes a lot of money from that concert, because it seems to me to not be worth it.

It gets blown way out of proportion.... at least this year it was.

I was there. Tailgated in gold lot and another Lot over by the casino

Overall good time. Yes there’s your fair share of WVU hoopies but the interaction I had with them were fine. Just some friendly banter

You have to think the city makes a ton off the tax from the tickets and the people that own the lots sure aren’t complaining.

Is there trash? Yes absolutely but it isn’t made out to be what it seems

At 37.5% rate parking tax with cheap parking going for $75, the City of Pittsburgh needs to STFU and deal with it Add in all the other taxes they receive, you better bevel they are making a killing on this concert and it is very worth it for them.

Saw about 5 people in country looking attire in the tiny shoulder of the Fort Duquesne bridge Saturday evening heading into the construction zone with no shoulders. They didn't look too stable, either. I thought for sure someone was going to get hit or fall off the bridge.

I'd be curious to see the actual numbers. How much does the city bring in from the taxes, vs how much the city must spend in policing this event, paying for additional security and medical services, cleanup costs, paying to give each person a trash bag and recycling bag, etc.

I bet they spend very little more than compared to a Steelers playoff game for police/security/medical. As far as cleanup that falls mostly on the lot owners and they choose to sell the spot as oppose to putting in dumpsters so that tells me yet again they are making a lot more money than paying in clean up.

I love the Chesney concert. Once a year Kenny arrives to show the fact that Western Pa is in fact in Appalachia. And the trash streams in from places like Fayettenam, Pennsyltucky, the Butler Fair, and of course West Virginia to drink beers were cowboy stuff and throw trash around.

The efforts to reign things in a bit have been moderately successful. Years ago I went to the casino with a buddy on the day of that show. He insisted on going to see some friends in the parking lots. It was a cesspool. I’ve done my fair share of tailgating and getting loaded so I’m not some prude - what I saw there was insane.

If you think Allegheny County doesn’t have its share of “trash streams” you are sadly mistaken.

It's really weird to me that someone would pay all that money to go to a concert like that and just throw trash on the ground, pretty much anywhere. I guess hauling a couple of pounds of garbage in the back of your truck would get the bed-liner sticky or something.

I did it about 10 years ago and felt like the old man despite being in my early 30s at the time. Its a cool event for the high school and early 20's crowd. There does seem to be an inordinate amount of garbage for what is nothing but drinking beer from cans or red cups from a keg, maybe a grill with some burgers and hot dogs. Where is all of this garbage coming from? It really should be no more than a typical steeler home game, I've done both, it's the same concept. Drink a lot of beer, eat some charred flesh, go into stadium..

Also, why doesn't the burden of the cleanup fall more on the lot owners? alco, or whoever runs the lots. they are the one charging 50 bucks for a spot, they should have to clean it up. if it's not enough, charge more.. I understand security falls on tax payers but why the clean up?

I was sitting in east club waiting in line to grab a beer and you could see out the window.... it was pittsburgh department of public works doing the trash collection. Whether the lot owners have a deal with the city to do this is beyond me

I'd guess that they made a favorable deal years ago. Pay for the rights to sell parking, but don't have to pay for cleanup. I could be wrong.

25 tons of trash last Saturday compared to two tons of trash at a typical Steeler home game.

The city makes around 200k of tax revenues.

No other city in America generates the level of trash for a Chesney concert similar to Pittsburgh. Why?

Isn't a Buffet concert a similar debauchery -- only with older folks in brighter colors? I recall driving past PNC Park The Morning After... parking lots looked like someone had run over a flock of macaws with a thresher.

Since I live amongst them and have been documenting their activities for a while now, I feel like I can speak to the habits of the target audience, here. First off, real "country folk" drink a disproportionate amount of Natty Light and no self respecting person of that origin is going to bother with kegs or cups. Straight from the can, sir. I'd guess 3-4 beers per hour for the average adult male (for a special event like this/it's not unheard of for them to consume a 36 pack over a normal weekend). Half that for a female that's been subjugated to cooking duties. Food is more of a distraction than a necessity. But simple is best. I'd guess some of the trash was probably a bunch of dollar store grills that were purchased to be abandoned along with Styrofoam coolers.

I always thought the Buffett tailgaters were much better adapted and efficient. Outside of the glass corona and Pacifico bottles of course. Much more laid back.

This was at star lake though, a much better venue than going to north shore. They’d have the portable blenders for mixed frozen drinks, stuff you take back home with you instead of leaving it.

Our coors light party balls still out there? They are perfect for this stuff. 2 1/2 cases, no deposit, get some solo cups, minimal trash for 5 or 6 drinkers. We’d go on road trips in college and take those for the ride, much better then 60 empty beer cans in the car.

You people realize that a very high percentage of tailgaters never even buy tickets (or make attempts to) to the concert right? They literally show up for the tailgate and that is it. Most of them are not Kenny or Country fans, this has turned into an event that people pay obscene money for a parking spot so they can tailgate en mass. People from all walks of life do it. That is what the Kenny Chesney concert has become in this city, an event that attracts the masses.

Again, if they wanted to have less clean up, all they would have to do is put in a few dumpsters. The lot owners chose not to, they would rather sell the parking spot.

Best thing about that...is my idiot, lunkhead steroid freak friends when I was much younger, one tried to jump off his roof into his pool with Coors Lt party ball with the goal of trying to take it to the bottom of the pool. He dislocated a shoulder in doing that. Oh....that wasn't the only stupid thing he did....but that was one.

I know one way of stopping alot of this for his concert particularly. Bring him in on a Wednesday Night. Those Saturday shows just invite a weekend of idiots.

I believe this year you had to have a ticket to the Concert to get into the Parking Lot.

Now, that obviously doens't limit the number of people heading down to lots to meet friends parked their tailgating. But I am almost positive any car parked in the lots had to show a ticket to concert to get into lot.

And you are exactly right, real easy solution to this would be to put dumsters in the Lot. But as you said they would rather sell those parking spots and deal with the trash after.

This story has always been 90 percent fiction. Folks at the SEA were upset a few years ago when some rap concerts turned bad and they started on this narrative about rural folks being worse. Thats when the imaginary amounts of garbage started being thrown around. If the city wanted to end an event due to clean up costs, the first 2 would be St. Patties Day and the marathon. Both are big losses that the city hides from the public.

Are you suggesting that the city fabricates the amount of garbage?

They sure went through a lot of trouble to make country folk look bad judging by the pictures.

Is it country folk or just white college and high school kids? Just because they have jean shorts doesn’t mean they are from Greene county. They sell tank tops in Allegheny county too

I agree. They are more likely young, stupid morons who have little respect for anything outside of a 1 foot radius of themselves. Country folks tend to be much cleaner then these dolts.

It’s pretty easy to make fun of people. Pretty sure nearly all of you limit your easy barbs to “these” kind of people and fear a wrath of demons to venture into insults of almost any other group.

While I would never have any desire to go to such a concert, I am no “do-gooder” taking pot shots at targets that win me cool points with internet strangers.

Yeah, white young people suck, don’t they HTP?

All this thread needs is SMF chiming in, telling us all how scared we’d be if 45k black youth met at one place and we’d be complete.

I wish I could unearth the tweet from Friday or Saturday morning that was four photos of fighting at past Chesney shows. And the second photo was a dude in a block Pitt T-shirt with no sleeves and no neck with some dude laying in front of him like he just got knocked out.

Because that dude was redneck as you could get and it was hilarious to see.
