OT: Halftime

How does a guy who never crossed into the mainstream draw a record viewership? We aren’t ignorant enough to think he was the reason are we?
did people turn in to watch him or was there a record number of people watching this game already who just watched the halftime show?

im not here to diminish him, i wasnt a fan but im not the targeted audience. didnt upset me, didnt excite me, like a lot of past super bowl shows..

i just find it funny that people are saying he got record numbers. Kendrick lamar got 133m viewers lol. i mean yeah i guess but that thing called the "Super bowl" was why people were watching in the first place. That's like saying, Harrison Ford selling Jeeps got 133m viewers. no, the game got 133m viewers and he did a commercial during that game..

it's not like 50m people watched the first half and another 80 million turned the TV on at halftime to see him perform. but good for him and whoever gets these gigs, having 130m people "Not turn the channel" when you come on means alot of money for you in future revenue, exposure, downloads, etc..

At it's peak, the game hit 137m. The halftime show was higher than the average 127m for the game. 1.3 million turned it off once his performance ended.

The numbers are compared to other SB acts, not some random performance on a Tuesday night.

Needless to say, this was a great commercial for his upcoming stadium tour- something no other individual rap artist has done without Beyonce or Rihanna co-headling.

yeah, doing a halftime show is probably one of the best things that can happen to an artist. just unbelievable returns on everything from upcoming shows to downloads on songs and everything that goes along with it.

you cant ask for a better promotion for an upcoming tour than a SB halftime show.

I tried to read this and had a seizure.

Can someone who isn’t on the spectrum translate this for me.

He already has the revenue record for biggest rap tour of all time, which he will definitely shatter this year with his stadium tour.

Exactly. If I was singing at halftime, I would have got 120 million viewers, ya know, because it would have been smack dab in the middle of the highest rated football game ever.

Has a hip-hop/rap act ever played at Acrisure or PNC Park? I know they've played PPG, but arenas and stadiums aren't really comparable.

I've got no dog in this fight. I appreciate his talent, but its not really what I like. But one thing to keep in mind is that in one day he got more YouTube views of the halftime show than any other show has gotten in total. So, that sort of tells me that it was a success.

It’ll be interesting to see who they bring in once the Jay Z arrangement runs out. It’s pretty wild that they haven’t done a country show since the 90s, I think that’d be the obvious next move.
I'm not a fan of country, but it does seem fair that it gets a turn. Maybe pepper it with some of the more hip hop country stuff, Have a popular country performer like Morgan Waller but add special guest like Shaboozey & Jelly Roll. Chris Stapeton and Teddy Swims would be ok too. And I like those two.

i like country myself, pumped for stapleton / george strait concert this summer. with that said, i just dont think it's appealing to the targeted demographic that today's nfl is going after, not do i think it's a good format for what the 1/2 time show is. it's more about the production and visual appeal than it is the music.

Stapleton did the national anthem a year or two ago and it was incredible, i'd leave it at that and just keep doing what they are doing for half time shows. plus, lets face it, you put a country singer in for a 1/2 time show, you'd ruffle A LOT Of feathers and get a very vocal backlash.

I don't like country but would hardly be mystified if a country act I wasn't super familiar with drew a huge audience at SB halftime show. I don't know who Morgan Wallen is other than he sold out stadiums here in Pittsburgh. I'd just accept that I'm not very in the know with country music.

Maybe. I'm not sure though. I think if they do it the way I suggested, it could be very well received.

I know one Morgan Waller song. One Luke Combs song. And zero Zach Bryan songs. But I do know that they are 3 of the most popular country acts out there today. I'd be as ok with them doing halftime as I was with Kendrick Lamar. Another opportunity for me to broaden my horizons.

once again, the nfl isnt trying to attract the "country Music" crowd.

I bet you heard this one. Listen through the female vocals. This one is pretty mainstream. It won Billboard music top rock song 2023 and he won rocks top artist.

Morgan Wallen has great crossover appeal. Gotta think he gets one soon. Probably also Post Malone, though he isnt country

I’m surprised, but no, I don’t know it. I liked it though. Listened to a few more on Spotify. Good stuff. Having said that, it isn’t Super Bowl halftime type music. A little too mellow. At least the few songs I listed to (Pink Sky was one). I’ll listen to more tomorrow.

Yeah totally mellow. You’re right.

“Something in the orange” is another popular one.

But it’s like campfire/fireplace/lakeside drink in the hand type mellow.

Might be the only two songs I know offhand…just like Kendrick Lamar …where I didn’t think I knew any songs but ended up knowing two.

Is there a lower form of life than a "country music fan"? Asking for any residents who has to deal with them for a concert in a city.

I get what you are saying, but honestly, you put that many people together and there are going to be problems. I don't go to Steeler games often, but the last time I went to a night game it was a total shit show outside and not that much better inside. One of the few exceptions was the Rolling Stones concert a few years back. Of course that was still while Covid was strong. But also, everyone was too stoned to cause problems. :)

Imagine being a rap fan and ripping country music fan. Part of the problem with the Super Bowl show was every other word had to be bleeped so it didn’t result in a good experience for the viewer. Then again, the crip dances are pretty cool.

Since I first heard George Carlins 7 words you can't say on TV bit as a child, I've been amused by those who get uptight over "curse words". (favorite part of the bit "Tits, sounds like a snack, doesn't it? The New Nabisco Tits. Cheese Tits, Corn Tits, Tater Tits. Bet you can't eat just one!")

Howard Stern took it to a whole new level by coming up with phrases to use that described exactly what the 7 words did but in a way that was ok with the FCC, yet sounded so much rauchier and dirtier. (like "third input") Yep, saying third input keeps you in God's good graces, but don't dare say the actual act. You'll go straight to hell. :)

It is just pure silliness. Sure, there is a time and place for everything. Conduct yourselves accordingly. But if the situation calls for it, then what's the big deal to say it on TV? If it is someone's art, let it rip. If it is a TV show about real life, well, people use those words in real life, why restrict them from TV?

George Carlin said it best when he said that there are no bad words. Just bad intentions.

I find it hard to believe that when that’s the only genre with multiple artists consistently selling out NFL stadiums. Not to mention, a majority of their fans are younger women
look at the halftime shows over the years and tell me what you see in common. plus, you put a country singer out there, the nfl would get a huge public backlash. it wouldnt go well for them.

I always like the hip hop vs country argument. It’s ultimately the same music….people singing about where they are from, what the like to do, or love. And the funny part is that they like to do the same things (drink and smoke, drive nice vehicles etc)

I mean, country fans would probably say this about mumble rap fans (and vice versa), as would hard rock fans about pop music fans, and people who like classical music about all the aforementioned. This isn't much of a barometer as to how suited a performer is to play a half time show or how successful it would be.

He didn't change most of them. He kind of like screeched instead of saying the swear word. And I would agree that it took away from the show. And this is my huge problem with rap. Listen, I am a casual fan of rap. But the swearing and lyrics are so vulgar that you can't sing along with a straight conscious and the lyrics are awful for kids. Rap is insanely popular with suburban white kids but every other word is a word they shouldn't be saying.
