The thing about fly fishing. There’s a big learning curve with flies and just making sense of gear, reading the water, and making the fly appear as natural as possible. It takes patience, quiet surrounding, and a lot of practice. I got better at it when I hired a fly fishing guide. But the guide did a little bit more help than true teaching, and the fish were too easy to catch in the stream they used. It felt good but at the same time wasn’t a back woods or mountain environment that you see real fly fisherman going after.

This is true advice. In clear water sight fishing, a guide isn't helpful if you can't cast well. I took a few mates learning to flyfish to a local stocked reservoir. Plenty of space to not get all tangled up, some edge cruisers and rising fish to cast to, and at least some chance of catching a fish. I have found taking beginners out to difficult water discourages them greatly.

Golf in retirement is great. Broke 100 rounds. Trying to hit 130.
Mess around in the kitchen. Not a chef, but I’m one helluva cook.
Long walks around Hilton Head.
Sipping on a nice Bianco, while reading a book, mid afternoon.
Best job I ever had.

So outside of work and Panther football, what do you do for fun? What are your skills?
It was interesting to see how many repair their appliances and have some skills that I do not possess.

So what are you good at? What do you do for fun on an off-week or off-season?

I homebrew, and am good at it! I haven't been that successful gardening, but just put in a big raised bed last weekend, for salad greens, carrots and beets and radishes. Have a big greenhouse, and put herbs and tomatoes and various peppers in there. I planted three varieties of hops at the rose trellises.

I am a keen flyfisherman. Going to get out somewhere for the Pitt off week.

I am accumulating new skills renovating an old house. Refinishing wood floors and hanging drywall. Not sure yet if I am good at that or not. Will find out in the coming weeks.

So what do you do when not wasting your time on Pantherlair?
I golf, bowl, and play bocce. All diversions that allow beer drinking.
Do the fitness thing a couple of times a week.
Do trivia one night a week with my sons.
Play board games one night a week. Love the mental exercise.
Do volunteer work for a Butler County non-profit. (Board Director)
Plan next year to do some serious vegetable gardening.
Foodie.

I've moved away from professional sports and don't miss it at all.
Still love college sports but will see given the way it's going.

I used to joke about giving up ice hockey (goaltending is really rough on 54 year old hips) and joining the lawn bowls club. I figure I could be the most penalised in the club (sort of like ice hockey---I am usually at the top for goalie penalty minutes). But the lawn bowls is probably only another year or so in the future, realistically. Although I have toyed with the idea of doing ref courses and becoming an ice hockey referee.
Good on you for the volunteer work. I have been on the Ice Hockey club board for 10 years. Had to give that up with the move.

I played on various flag football teams into my late 40's because I just couldn't give the game up. It's a lot rougher than it sounds and it took an arthritic condition to finally get me to a doctor. I wouldn't have given up those extra games for anything.

I'm trying to learn, right now. Love stream fishing and own some property with a mile of beautiful water on it that is surrounded by several more streams just like it. I've experimented with Tenkara, too, but I'm going to work with a friend that does guide work and try to learn more about it. Maybe even eventually learn how to tie flies. We'll see.

I miss playing hockey and basketball.
Actually I miss golf, just don't find that many people who now play and certainly haven't played like I used to in South Carolina when I actually had some semblance of a game.
It does suck getting old.

It certainly does suck getting old! I remember not that long ago when I ran a mile or in marathons, I could do a mile in under 9 minutes. That was in my late 50's. Now if I can keep a mile pace of 10:30, it's a major accomplishment. I found out I'm not as fast as I used to be. :p

I'm currently just fast enough to make it to the bathroom in time and I'm terrified of losing a step.

Golf is my favorite hobby
Been teaching myself bass guitar

jog, row, and lift weights but that’s more a chore for health than a hobby - if I could stay healthy drinking beer and eating hot wings I would prefer that

This was extremely helpful to me when I taught myself to play bass:
