Rumor is the luck of the Irish has run out and they’ll be hiring a leprechaun from the south to fill his shoes. He’d be a slam dunk for them.

He's a good coach. He turned down P6 jobs over the years but then took a CAA job which I didnt understand. I forgot he was there and was wondering why Charleston was good again.
He waited so he could go to another job and dominate then get an elite job instead of going to a bad mid major and get exposed

Brey has had a pretty damn good run there. 23 years is a long tenure. Couple of Elite Eights. Several Sweet 16’s. At least one conference championship that I can recall. Above average teams most every year. If he had just been able to advance to a final four or two he’d be a legend in South Bend. This season just looks different, so I guess they have seen enough.

Does Notre Dame suffer from the same self-imposed admissions limitation in basketball that they do in football? I don’t think it’s as much of an issue in basketball given the high school landscape, but it’s definitely a factor that pretty much just Notre Dame suffers from in this league.

Yes. It’s why you see the same type of dudes there all the time. It’s dumb.

Kelsey’s fresh blood should give them an uptick in landing some of the better of those crop though

It feels like the fact that basketball recruiting is more centered in the Catholic school/prep school world makes it a little easier just since most of those admissions issues feel like they get caught and cleaned up earlier. But it’s still a consideration.

Transfers might be where things get a little weird for them. Stanford and Northwestern, too.

Interesting. Bree has been pretty solid there. Almost feels like a “careful what you wish for” situation like we had with Dixon. But if they have a plan of someone who will be a good hire that would be a hell of a lot better than what we did hiring Stollings.

Yeah they definitely have higher admission standards than the average power six schools. Definitely doesn’t help the recruiting

"same self-imposed admissions limitation" ..aka pretending to some extent we are an institution of higher learning and not a pro league farm system...

Yeah, that’s what I mean.

You mean that there is another school besides Pitt, which has an administration that doesn’t want to win?

Yep. Probably a big factor in why Brian Kelly went to LSU. Along with the Brinks truck of cash he got.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek. Every administration wants to win. LSU has more money to invest in sports than Notre Dame, regardless of what admission standards are being used. And more money makes it easier to win.

It was pretty well reported that Kelly wasn’t convinced that he could build a national championship roster at Notre Dame, but could at LSU. Admissions were definitely a big part of that.

Its official, he is out. Not a real big surprise considering the state of the program and they were going to be worse next year.

Will be very interesting what JJ Staling and Ven Allen Lubin do, 2 freshen that should have quite a bit of interest should they leave.

They also have a few top 150s that might open up too.

Duquesne would be stupid if they dont make the call

I bet dollars to donuts Brey had a phone conversation with his mentor Coach K. Not a bad idea to go out now as the basketball business is going to get insanely dirty with NIL. He had a good run and never embarrassed himself.

Interestingly, we play at ND in the 2nd to last game in what will become Mike Brey Night in his last home game, a place we rarely win as it is. Even in the glory days, I can only remember winning 1 or 2 games there. There was the game we won in OT when Jamie called a TO at the end of regulation when it appeared Lamar was driving for a winning shot. Cant remember any other wins.

I was there in 2003 for a win. Can’t remember another.

didnt we beat them on a saturday afternoon in 2003. we had a sophomor center who was 6 foot 8 inches and he was a man child that day.. He had a bad back and never played in the NBA. I am terrible with names. Cant remeber his name

Now I remember a win in our final regular season game in 2005. I remember thinking we needed the win to make the NCAA Tournament, maybe we didnt really. I think that was the year we closed at BC and at ND and the thought was we needed 1 and we got both.

And he’s probably right. I’d bet money that Kelly wins at least one. Every LSU coach does.

Yes. I was at that game. Went with Joe Starkey of The Fan. Used Mark McCarroll’s tickets. Played a couple young guys in 2 on 2 hoops at the local Y before the game. Schooled them. Great trip.
