OT: Pittsburgh again among 25 best places to retire....

Just got to Portland & Seattle last month...first time. The "Keep Portland weird" signs are appropriate. Didn't spend enough time to really get around, but it didn't impress me greatly.
Seattle is much more interesting...the waterfront, ferries and size were more impressive. Too damn wet, though. Lots of Asians in both towns, generally nice people in both. Seem to be fairly prosperous. Wouldn't mind going back......might be there next year as my granddaughter grads from Duck U.
Do you like beer, wine, beautiful landscapes, and good food?
If so, Portland is awesome.

My happiness has nothing to do with the topic.
But it would make it more diverse.
I personally would enjoy more Hispanics. A jovial bunch. Ended up in a karaoke bar in Chula Vista one time by myself, not one English speaking person, all Mexicans.. Weird little dive bar. ..Stayed for hours, had a blast. Asians I could take or leave, don't annoy me but usually a pretty boring group of people. You see an Asian dude at a party, safe bet he isn't the life of the festiva.

I can end this with.....Pittsburgh at one time was one of the most "diverse" cities in the early 1900's with its heavily Euro and Eastern Euro immigrants. Now, those are no longer "diverse". Only people who look different are "diverse". Pittsburgh has been and is one of the whitest cities we know. But, there are more and more Latino's, Middle Eastern folk and Asians here now and it is growing.

And despite the board hipsters on here's thoughts, Pittsburgh is lauded by national arts, food, culture writers as being one of the "cooler" places or cities in the country. You know, the people who do this and travel for a living.

good post recruits. Yeah, strong german, polish heritage in this city is so "19th-20th century." Its now the 21st century, white people that speak English are all the same, we need brown people to make it count.. and make sure they don't know a lick of English too.. Then and only then, will Pittsburgh be cool again..

But there are. Hey, I can find fantastic tacos here. Old school, real life taco stands, not Taco Bell or some Epicurian Gourmet's interpretation of Mexican foods. I mean Lengua, with cilantro, onions, fresh tortillas, lime, no sour cream and cheese and lettuce. Or go to Salem's Market in the Strip. Or go to Squirrel Hill, Everyday Noodles, Chengdu Gourmet, Sichaun Gourmet, these aren't your blah, boring Chinese restaurants, they are real deal stuff you would find in NYC. Then there is Conflict Kitchen which has gotten rave reviews of providing food from whatever country we are having issues with du jour.

It is not NYC. It is not Chicago, it is not LA or Seattle, but it is getting better. On the flip side, some of these more "diverse" cities, you can't get good Italian food, or Italian markets. Or real deal Polish food. Hell in my hometown, there were Catholic churches still doing mass in Polish and Slovak and Italian.

I lived in the South, and despite the cities having larger African American populations, they were among the most boring, least diverse as far as food/grocery and cultural type of activities.

One other thing. A lot of these cities that are more diverse than Pittsburgh based on larger African American or Latino populations aren't better off by any stretch. It is not a badge of honor or because of any progressive programs or attitudes. It is the result of white flight and economic downturns where only the poorest tend to remain and congregate. Those are hardly cities or areas of some cities you really want to visit. Certain areas look like Mogadishu, and I am not talking about the residents.

I demand equality and I volunteer Freeport and dop to go over to china and increase their diversity..

I suspect that China's lack of diversity is the reason they have such a weak economy and their students are so bad at math and science.

P.S. All the ASIAN's in CHINA lived in the SAME NEIGHBORHOODS!! They got nothing but ASIAN NEIGHBORHOODS!!!

Anyone else outraged?

Morgantown isn't the South.

Call me old fashioned, but the need for diversity is never an issue for me.

We go into the city from the 'burbs several times a month. We support the cultural scene: music shows, the theatre, sporting events, etc., and we always frequent the restaurants, either before or after the event.

For us, it doesn't matter what race, creed, or color the other people are - white, black, Asian, Hispanic...why should it matter, since it doesn't influence why we were in town in the first place.

Live and let live; as long as everyone respects everyone's right to be there and to have a good time.

And that is all well and good...
The entire debate is a matter of perspective, like I said.
If you grew up in a place very homogenous sure Pittsburgh seems diverse. At least the city parts, the suburbs aren't remotely.

If you live somewhere where That is diverse, Pittsburgh isn't.

Doesn't mean it's better or worse as a result.

Japan is the same. I don't have it in front of me but look up the immigration stats for Japan. They let very few non Japanese in. Very restrictive place.
Japan
In a country where nationals favor a racially unique and homogenous society, the foreign population accounted for only 1.7 percent of the total population in 2010, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Japan's strict immigration.

Interesting comparison. Their terrorism score is a 0 ( 10 being the worst) and the US terrorism score is a 4.6.??

Pittsburgh is a great city if you are Caucasian simple and plan. There is no harm no foul in that, it is what it is. It is a black and white city, blacks in one part of the town and whites in the other. If you are going to have these polls on how great a city is, please go to Homewood or Wilkinsburg and get that part also! Anytime you build a subway to one part of town, that says a lot about your city. On the topic of diversity, look at the posters here, I might be one of three blacks.

well as one of 3 blacks, we white people welcome you with open arms.. you bring up a valid point about the T though, very weird it just caters to the south hills.. I was always lucky, being very close to a stop all my life.. World of difference taking trolley vs. bus.. Trolley is actually nice, something has to have seriously gone wrong in my life if I have to take a bus in this city, horrible experience..

Pretty much exactly right. Pittsburgh is diverse at the city level, but not at the neighborhood level. We need a rail line from downtown through Oakland, that is accessible to folks in Uptown and the lower Hill.

absolute no brainer. I swear I saw an article though that had a cost estimate over the billion mark.. I know they did a cost estimate with a T line running up to cranberry and that was like 1/5 billion but I remember something insane as far as a T line to Oakland.

I posted this before but south park used to have an elevated road running along Corrigan for busses.. Now it was brutal on the eyes no doubt but I think a t line would either have to be elevated or underground, cant just put tracks on 5th like you see in dormant/beechview.. That was cool in 50's and all but obviously a logistical nightmare in this day and age..

I'd personally love to see a tee line along the river to hazelwood and run up to Oakland along the hollow. This is if they ever figure out what the hell they are doing over there in Hazelwood with that land. But that would be a cool little route.. Now how you get a trolley line up a mountain would be up to engineers..

The Rooney Tunnel took 5 years to build, cost over $600 million......w/o taking out any housing....just tunneled under the river. My guess is any legit transit....not bus lanes...from dahntahn to Oakland/Shadyside would be a couple large. They should just use pneumatic tubes across the rooftops. Or a zip-line system. A bit brisk in January, that.

The whole diversity comment was brought up by me in regards to African American recruits. It was made in relation to other normal college campuses.

I then listed wvu, penn state, Madison Wisconsin etc. I used uva which was a mistake but Pittsburgh is more diverse than Morgantown, state college, and Madison. That's a fact. And Pitt in Oakland and in Pittsburgh is a more diverse environment than a lot of college campuses around the country.

I know. Who would argue that? That would be idiotic to argue against that.

My dad told me if I ever saw a Vietnamese girl eating pierogies not to date her because she must be my sister.

Wait, how did I get to this thread?
