Well, she was from a wealthy family, they lived in La Jolla, and her dad was on the board of directors of an aerospace company, and was an aerospace engineer, and her cousin was President of Bolivia. Also, she came after Rita Moreno and desi Arnez, so there wasnt exactly a huge barrier there.
