OT Robo Calls!

As much as I try to protect my phone # I still get these calls.
When you do things, sign up for things, try not to provide a phone number or email address.
A lot of organization sell phone numbers linked with an address and email. All three are gold!
Cell phones #'s are valuable since there's no directory of cell phones like there is for landlines.
If you sell anything on Craigslist try not to provide you number if possible.
We sell a lot of stuff on CL in an attempt to thin out the stuff in the house.
CL has a great internal email system so stick with that until someone actually agrees to meet you
or come to your home if its something like furniture.

What I don't get, is how they are continuing to get away with this, in our world of litigation, why aren't there class action suits and why isn't congress and the FBI doing something against this rather than what college BB player got money from a shoe company or what rich person paid to get their kid in a certain university?

Back in the 90's when people had land lines and fax machines there was and is a law if you get more than 3 faxes from a telemarketer you can call attorney groups who would accumulate the violations and file class action law suits against the advertiser.
In the day of fax machines you had hard copy of the telemarketer offer.
Today the telemarketers are spoofing numbers so you don't have a number to report to authorities.

I called back a local number from a call yesterday and got a vm message from a guy named Ray whose in box was full.
I bet everyone who got calls was calling him back to complain!
Poor Ray

This is why it's difficult to go after these companies. The also use fake companies as a front. For example they might say this is Hilton or Marroitt when its some fly by night company.
Spoofing

Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of a call that the originator of the call is a station other than the true originating station. For example, a Caller ID display might display a phone number different from that of the telephone from which the call was placed.

That's why blocking the number does no good at all. They will only use a number for a call, and the next time they call you it's from another number.

Yesterday I'm sitting there and a woman next to me gets a call telling her there's a warrant out for her arrest and what she needs to do to deal with it.

Hilarious because she works for the FBI!

I think the saddest part about this conversation is that it keeps happening because it keeps working.
Does it though? You mean to say there are actually people out there who take them up on their offers?
Can't be that many hits. Must either be really profitable or must cost them pennies to try.

I expect the latter. I think they "employee" commission only, 1099 people and turn them like crazy.

For sure. I have blocked hundreds of numbers but they have millions to choose from.

Like I said, I have gotten these scam robo calls......FROM MY OWN CELL PHONE NUMBER!!! MY OWN PHONE NUMBER!

I filed a complaint with one of the agencies (forget which one) on the "Warranty Registration" in which I got no lie probably 200 calls over 3 years, with every sort of "no" as a response and that I was at wits end with "Do Not Call" lists etc....and she said "well obviously they are a scam, so they aren't going to abide by laws or rules".

I said, then I give you permission as a private citizen to institute drone strikes and kill as many of them as you can.

I have gotten calls from my phone numbers also. It's kinda freaky to see your own number calling you.

The goofball who is our current Governor used to be our Attorney General. He made lots of commercials telling us that he was going to fight Robo Calls, and then made no difference at all.

He's been about as effective as Governor.

Is everyone still getting them? I was bombarded last week but haven't received one since Friday.

We actually are supposed to have a Do Not Call list in this country. You put your phone number on it and it is supposed to make your number forbidden to telemarketers and bill collectors. The problem is that they only enforce it against bill collection companies that use high pressure tactics.

That’s why I use the dog whistle.

If actually being effective was a condition for being re-elected to public office ... eh, i can't think of a funnier punchline than the sardonic reality.

Are the callers canine?
That’s terrifying!

The calls are bad. But I also occasionally get EMAILS from people I know and when I open them they are for weight loss programs. At first I thought they were from a buddy busting my balls.

Then I got one from my nephew, who had suddenly passed away two years ago. That was disturbing to say the least.

Update on the use of an emergency whistle to bother the telemarketer.
I get daily calls ( 5-6pm) probably from the same group because the numbers are always local but different spoofed numbers.

So earlier in the week I got out my emergency whistle which is designed to attract attention, it has a loud whistle sound, I waited for the call, put my cell phone on speaker phone, and as the person began to talk I blew the whistle as loud as I could, and I heard a scream on the other end.
I'm sure the person had a headset on and I'm sure it was uncomfortable or worse!
Guess what no calls tonight!
Maybe blowing the whistle at the telemarketer convinced them to take my number off the list?
I'll see if I get the call tomorrow! This is the first night with no calls post whistle??!

Well it's a lot like gun laws, right? I mean you can make these laws, but if they are scams, they are essentially breaking the laws anyways, so why would they follow a Do Not Call Law?

My funniest story was when they called my house. They told me my windows computer was infected, I told them "But I have a Macintosh" they said hold on. Guy comes back and says my mac was infected, I told him the other guy said it was a windows? So I keep going back and forth with the guy, until I told him to stop trying to scam people and get a real job. Guy wasn't too happy and dropped a a couple f bombs

I had the same call. I told him I didn't have a Windows computer, and he "connected" me with a girl from "Apple". I asked her how would a Microsoft employee work in the same office as an Apple employee.

She just said, "We do."

Instead of allowing her to follow her script, I kept peppering her with stupid questions about basic operations of the computer. I wouldn't allow her to get a word in, and then she hung up when I said, "You seem really smart; can you help me fix my dishwasher, too?"

My 91 year old mother in law keeps getting calls that they are about to shut down her Facebook account.
I've indoctrinated her to always check with me before doing anything computer wise. She had been burned once giving out her credit card # to Microsoft to save her windows account! What a PITA that was!

The way these vultures prey on our vulnerable seniors is pathetic. First it is amazing that older folks have embraced technology and use social media at all, but their understanding of how things work is very elementary. They are extremely gullible.

I was only half kidding when I said we should target these call centers with Cruise Missiles. They are just as much terrorists as those animals that crashed into the towers. Our government should do more to protect our citizens. Find out where these places are, communicate with the local government to shut them down or we will, then follow through.
Let them know what's coming, scare the shit out of them and then blow them to hell where they belong!

What good is this trillion dollar military if we don't use it to protect our citizens? They have them wasting their time sitting in the desert waiting for Pancho when they could be doing something useful in annihilating these predators!

Hoooooyaaaaaaaaaa!

When my neighbor suspects a telemarketer he answers the phone Northamton County Prison Death Row who would you like to speak with?
And keeps repeating this until they hang up.

LOL. I said it above, when I called the FCC and registered a complaint, I did actually say to the girl I was talking to "you are the government, you know where these people are, you can find them and kill them with a drone strike. I give you permission, I won't tell". She laughed.

I’ve gotten that call several times. What I usually do is to act as though I don’t understand, and I start telling them that I just got new “windows” on my house last year. They usually interrupt me and say, “No, this is about the windows on (my) computer”. I then tell them that my computer doesn’t have any windows, and it doesn’t even have a door.

I continue with this stupid talk about needing to wash my new “windows” until they finally swear and hang-up. I figure that the longer that I tie them up, the more frustrated (and angrier) they get.
