I can't imagine any other city has this bad of a sports media fraternity. Except Boston. Pittsburgh has so many asshats on the airwaves and in the papers.
It's a good thing that today's technology allows one to easily access media from outside of Pittsburgh.

Unless one is a masochist, there's no reason to subject himself to much of what passes as media in Pittsburgh.

As much of an ass as he is, sometimes I listen to Madden for entertainment factor. It’s silly at times how stupid his callers sound and he obviously isn’t adverse to calling them out on their stupidity. Certain points he makes I agree with too, but others are just annoying/stubborn additives to his schtick, and the rare rational sounding callers he disagrees with he just loudly talks over/hangs up on.

The other shows though on the Fan and such... yawn. I follow some of the guys on Twitter for the dialogue/responses they get. But message boards and Twitter fill my void for ranting and having rational sports discussions, I have no interest in listening to them and their commercial fests.

Also personally have no interest in paying money for DK’s ego, Pittsburgh Politics Now and the Athletic’s various poached PG reporters, though the Athletic does at least have the advantage of having National writers.

As much as those callers are stupid don’t you mean averse as opposed to adverse?

Well damn, I used the wrong word by a letter in a long message board type up, guess that makes me stupid too.

Funny thing is I was typing that out at the gym and noticed I used “rationale” instead of “rational” and caught that. I did good in English in school, I swear!

You know.....when Madden isn't doing his WWF schtick (which he does all the time) and tries to be the local radio heel, his takes are actually pretty damn good and rational.

I don't listen but he is usually one of the better hockey guys. The stuff with JuJu is weird.

Madden's shtick doesn't bother me much because I know it's his thing, but sometimes he does go overboard like his weird obsession with JuJu. I have no doubt if the guy played for the Pens he would be one of Madden's favorites. Did JuJu turn down a radio interview or something?

I think Madden just latched on to the circus with AB and Bell last year and he was right about it all. I think he stays on JuJu because that was part of the shtick but who knows, he could be right about JuJu's antics, too.

I’m with you. I like Madden’s sarcasm and wit. I don’t like his over the top obsession with JuJu and other things he is sometimes obsessed about (most recently Penguin fans loyalty to Kessel). What he doesn’t understand is his ratings and relevance would be just as good and likely better without the tired JuJu angle. It’s not funny and it’s not effective. Because honestly, some are so bored with it that they change the channel. You can play the heel better when you’re not overplaying the same old tired angle. With his wrestling background he should know that. Gimmicks have expiration dates and the JuJu one should have disappeared a long time ago.

I suppose people aren’t going down the radio dial because those guys are dreadfully boring. But maybe people turn off talk radio altogether? With Sirius XM, Apple Radio, Pandora, podcasts, etc...we have options.

His friend and hero is Chris Jericho. Anyone who knows who Jericho is knows that he’s had longevity and success because he knows when to retire a gimmick or angle and create a new one before the old one got tired. Madden needs to take a page from his friend and realize he needs to move on from JuJu.

Madden is extremely transparent.
Pittsburgh isn't a soccer town, but he obsesses over it.
Pittsburgh loves JuJu so he trashes him
Pittsburgh hates Ben, so he defends him at any chance.
Pittsburgh loves Hines Ward, so he trashes him.

i haven't listened to his show in over a year because i was tired of it and don't think he gives Pitt a fair chance. PItt's the only sport i really care about in this town. if he is just going to crap all over it, then i'm not interested. But i can't help seeing some of his tweets because friends of mine either retweet or like his stuff. nothing is changing w/ him, as i would expect.

does Pitt deserve criticism sometimes? sure. but one of the last things i heard when i listened was the argument he made that Duzz has fired or lost way more assistants than the national average and it was just plain BS and made up. not that it was some kind of huge example, but just the last thing i remembered. He showed literally no research or understanding, just a chance to crap all of Duzz.

Bingo. Exactly how I feel about him. Sometimes his takes are dead on, but when he latches on to something ala JuJu it is really, really, boring. Really boring.

But what is worst, his callers rival those on the Nightly Sport Show for lowbrow IQ's and when they try to suck up to him, that is the worst.

He just doesn't care or like college sports, it doesn't drive the needle for him, so if he is not interested or it is not driving ratings, he is going to dismiss it out of hand.

Also, Narduzzi must have snubbed him a couple of times, because he until recently, he has always been pro Pitt and he is definitely anti PSU and WVU.

Madden liked Wanny and Gattuso. Narduzzi didn’t come in and kiss his ass, so he took to bashing him.

I actually remember him having Narduzzi on the show when he first got hired like 4 years ago. Ever since he goes on about how he's stubborn, hated how he shunned the media in the weeks leading up to the PSU games, and now he's all like "Narduzzi's a jackass, if he and I were at a bar in Pittsburgh, more people would walk up to me"

Doesn’t it have something to do with the Incident/party at Narduzzi’s home?

You mean you did “well?”

pretty sure there was outrage that the previous equipment manager was expected to do more than his job description at the cookout, then he quit. luckily Pitt football persevered.

I kind of remember something like that, too.

Right. Is there more to it than this? I know Madden felt Narduzzi was out of line. Is he right?

As much as Madden is an ass, listening to the counterparts on the Fan at the same time (Mueller and Poni) is 100 times worse.

exactly. Madden is entertaining, and actually fairly knowledgeable. But all the Penguin talk in July.....could do without that. Perhaps the only Pittsburgh sports media personality to criticize Penn State. Also one of the few to keep calling out the Pirates for the frauds they are.

He admits to being a Pitt fan, but there has been nothing for him to be excited about. As mentioned before he does play favorites and will turn against someone for even the smallest transgression. He was a big fan of Gattuso/Wannstedt so when they were gone it has been an uphill battle since. I know that equipment manager that was let go was a life long yinzer who knew many people so maybe that, coupled with Narduzzi's lack of openness with the media has caused his current attitude.

This.

He's said time after time that he's not going to talk about things that nobody cares about because he's driving ratings. Let's face it, Pittsburgh sports media works in the following progression: obsessing over the Stillers, giving wrong/stupid opinions about the Penguins, trying to prop up or talk down the Pirates, and then other.

He was the first to talk about the PSU/JoePA/Sandusky story

yep, and the PG even had a beat writer covering PSU and broke nothing on the story, nor did they do any follow-up investigation after the news was out there. Compare with the coverage they gave to the Robert Ferrante case and Pitt.
