Jamie Dixon's short stint as a professional player in New Zealand 30 years ago has paid off well with his recruiting. First Steve Adams to Pitt, and today TCU got a commitment from Yuat Alok, the top-ranked JUCO player in the country. He's a 6'11" big who plays D (1.6 blocks/gm) and also shoots 3's (11-for-25 from deep).

The fact that Dixon is now routinely beating actual D1 schools for recruits, and we are still beating low majors for recruits, makes me wonder if the issue is Pitt, and not the coaches. Maybe Howland was right.

What did Howland say? All I remember him saying was UCLA was the only job he'd leave Pitt for and I believed that.

So why can't Pitt do this and/or why couldn't Jamie get a lot of top recruits at Pitt? TCU was a doormat. Pitt has had recent success? Do our assistants suck? Do we have a higher academic standard? I hear the admin, is it no $$$ for assistants which lead to sucky ones?

I wonder if TCU's boosters decided to make more of a commitment to basketball if you know what I mean sorta like you see at Baylor and SMU. I mean, yea, Dixon's assistants are better but he's recruiting better at TCU than he ever has at Pitt. Its definitely academics or geography.

Its probably just a combination of Dixon getting more offensive-friendly, having better assistants, not being bad-mouthed by Northeast/mid-Atlantic AAU coache as a defensive guy, and TCU boosters stepping up. Lots of money in Fort Worth. So much so that they are building a taxpayer-funded 14,000 seat arena (for thr city, not TCU).

His eye contact has improved greatly since he left for TCU.

Whoa. Let's relax. He also recruited the best player out of New Zealand, ever. A kid who was a top 5 recruit. He recruited him when he was at.........Pitt. So a) he has connections in NZ and b) with Adams success I would think Jamie has even more credibility with the Kiwis.

I think you all are looking way too much into this commit. If Jamie was still at Pitt, likely he would have gotten him here also.

Did you guys ever consider that maybe our assistants and/or boosters did a few things from 2002-2012 to land some players? Then our administration stepped in, and put the clamps down. It is typical Pitt. The admin. botching things up.

Of course the issue is Pitt. If you were looking to pick a school for football or basketball, would you objectively choose Pitt knowing the history of one cluster after the next?

I am relaxed. Point being, it isn't just this recruit. TCU has greatly improved recruiting overall.

They are certainly spending on their basketball program, facilities, salaries, etc. Its hard to verify assistant coaching salaries, but I've been told that Dixon had double the budget for assistants that he had at Pitt, that might explain why he lured such a good staff.

Thank you. Sometimes, it's difficult to get these facts understood on this board.

Too bad Jamie played his pro ball in New Zealand instead of Australia. We got one year from one Kiwi (as great as he is in the pros.) St Mary's has gotten 17? Australians under their head coach. Gonzaga gets a lot too. Though they both are a much shorter flight home down under.

Not really. We only won one (Birch) really contested (possibly dirty) recruiting battle for a top player with big time school interest. Dante Taylor is the only other one and much of the reason we won is because we were on him first before he blew up as a recruit. Other than that we were getting some guys who had some offers, but nothing we should have HAD to cheat big time for. And I say this understanding we broke (and still do break) little rules like everyone does, without paying $100k for recruits.

agree... I am not saying we were totally clean, no program is based on the NCAA rules.... But I also don't see us as a program that was dirty during those years.

Howland and then Dixon did a great job of finding kids that were under recruited players who had room to grow and develop into good players by their Junior/Senior seasons. We landed very few impact freshman type kids that were able to come in and play big roles. Obviously some exceptions like Adams and Blair but overall the philosophy was developing players.

That philosophy changed somewhere in the last few seasons with the move to the ACC.

Nice pick up. Jamie can consistently run him out 20 feet from the basket on the hedge then he can turn pro after a year.

Stallings can stare holes through people. Can't we just find a coach with normal ocular behavior?

Jock Landale is a hell of a player that no one seems to know of.

Pitt might be "Nutting" their coaches.

We have more pressing issues to think about than if TCU lost to Vanderbilt. We have a cluster%$#@ of a program and a coach right now. TCU doesn't. How is it going to be fixed?

Gotta love the Dixon news!!

Why didn’t anyone mention he lost to Vanderbilt over the weekend?

I know that I cringe when I see a Dixon post anymore -- whether if be something pro or con.

The only point, however, that I do find relevant is my concern that what if Dixon's recruiting problems in his last three years -- and the subsequent issues that Stallings is having -- are indicative of a "Pitt problem" and not necessarily the lack of recruiting ability of either of these two men.

Pitt problem? Bullcrap.... Nonsense. Bring in Cal tomorrow and Pitt would have the best freshman class in the country.

Too bad he didn't have him off Vandy.... wonder if he'll ever get to touch the ball in his single season at TCU.
