OT: The forgotten PENS

like I said, who brings the return they’re looking for?
But you are trading for guys like DOC. The best moves will be to try and shed cap space like trading Smith, Rackell, hell Graves for basically prospects or cheaper younger guys then sign guys like Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, Nikita Zadorov or a Jack Roslovic and add those players.

I doubt the players you propose trading will bring young talent in return, but I’m all for trying. Why would other teams trade for our bad contracts rather than sign the free agents you mention? I believe the first three you mention will all hit 30 next year as well, so I guess that would be baby steps in the direction of youth but the Pens would still be old. I don’t think much of Roslovic, especially with the physical makeup of the Pens, I guess he’d look good on the 4th line.

By the way, DOC is a UFA after next season, I expect they’ll sign him or at least try to. I only mentioned him because I think he’d be the most likely to get a youthful return.

Look, in some cases, I am not looking to gain top prospects as much as I am to gain cap space to retool the team through some free agents. Granted, there are no UFA's under the age of 27, and rarely will a great player ever hit this...but you can pick up some valuable assets without trading prospects/draft picks.

I think that's where we differ. Retooling with the available free agents would likely make the team marginally better, but no where near good enough to compete for a Cup. IMO, it would turn them into the Steelers, perpetual mediocrity. I'd prefer they do what the Blackhawks did, let it burn for a year or two, then use the cap space to compliment the youth.

Good discussion.

Yeah well I agree with you, but they should have done this 3-4 years ago. And not resigned Malkin and some others, move some of these guys for picks. They didn't and now pretty much except for the guys I mentioned above, they are stuck. Maybe Edmonton gets swept or beat in 5 because of goaltending and they are desperate and make a swing for Jarry, but that maybe wishful thinking.
