Our New OC

It will probably be someone we havnt even mentioned or someone who was fired and we don't have to pay a buy out

Sonny Dykes was just fired. Just saw a quote," We want a head coach who is fully committed to our program and our university."(Cal AD).

I don't think he's coming here, but that's a fun inquiry.

What that means is, "Cal would like to welcome the next head coach of the Bears, Chip Kelly".

I make this comment being fully aware that YSU was on their 4th string qb versus JMU, but their offense was BAD. No creativity in the run game, no explosive plays. There are many options, much better options that just may not be obvious to us fans. I trust Narduzzi to make a good hire so i highly doubt itll be Montgomery, but if it is i would be very very disappointed.

"Creativity" is a word that people have been throwing around. I tend to want to ask what do people mean, because Canada really only feature a handful of run plays. The team ran them really well.
In terms of YSU, I would say watch some of their other games. I watched their game against Jackson St. They had chunk plays in the passing and the running game. Teams have bad games.
It's a bit unfair to judge the OCs based on results alone, especially one game.

I thought Pitt's use of the FB and tightened on inside tosses and the FB on jets was creative as were the various actions we used off the jet sweep. We also passed off the read option run which worked well. We also used the backs effectively in the pass game. Lastly the flip flopping we did with our linemen in the Clemson game kept Clemson off balance the entire game. Throw in the trick plays we used with O'Neil(other than the one in the bowl game) and I think we surprised a lot of teams with what we did. Neither Penn St or Clemson were ready for the game plans we used in those games.

Your seriously questioning Canada and creativity? Wow. The dude had his best year of his career and our offense was more than solid. Week after week opposing defenses were not ready for our offense.

Once you get past the window dressing, It ends up being a lot of jet sweeps and reverses with keep you honest power dives. It's fun to see big guys run those plays, but it isn't really different plays per se. A lot of plays are things in other teams arsenal as well.

It may be unfair to judge off one game, it may not be. Canada ran the ball with runningbacks, fullbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends with the shovel pass, essentially an extension of the run game. There was a little zone-read sprinkled in and he attacked the perimeter with jet sweeps. All of these out of multiple formations.

Youngstown State's run game was essentially a handoff to the rb out of the shotgun formation. Im not expecting pitt to keep putting up 43 points per game, but they cant go back to scoring 28 per game again if they want to keep winning, considering the defensive struggles. I didnt see anything from that YSU game to make me think Montgomery would be a good choice.

The thing I want to see Pitt be able to continue to is to continue to be able to manufacture confusion and uncertainty on the part of the defense. The movement: trading; shifting; motion; reverse motion; play action; inside running; outside running; etc. And Pitt was able to be prepared and disciplined enough to do that pretty much all year long with a minimum of procedure/false start penalties or delay of game penalties and managing to score a school record number of points.

The nits didn't know what hit them. They admitted it after the game: up to and including their HC. Sitting in the stands at Clemson and being able to see all 22 players on the field at the same time, it was amazing to see Pitt move players around pre-snap with precision while the Clemson defense was often looking at either each other or to the sidelines for direction and help in their assignments right up until Pitt snapped the ball. And this was the 10th game of the season, so the Tigers had a LOT of game film to study in preparation for Pitt. Couldn't believe they were still so confused by what Pitt was doing. And their D is GOOD (just ask tOSU).

That, to me, was the brilliance of the Canada offense. It allowed Pitt to be so tremendously balanced and at times unpredictable on O because it kept the opposition guessing. That's the essence of the O that it would be great if the new OC is able to continue to implement and maintain. Think there is a lot of solid material in place for Pitt to be able to continue to execute similarly in 2017. Of course the play of whoever the new QB is will be intrinsic to that. But think philosophically it would be great if the new OC can build off of this year instead of starting over or trying to re-invent the wheel here.

When Cignetti ran Hynoski in motion, he was a moron. When Canada does it with Aston, he's creative. I guess shovel passes to a TE and jet sweeeps is creative? It all comes down to execution and players.

The only thing i would say is, hiring the new OC to be Canada 2.0 won't work. Taking a coach and trying to turn him into someone he's not would fail miserably.

However, if you hire an OC that is just as creative, just as flexible to totally arrange the scheme around the players and give him free reign over the offense, then it will work. And id bet there would be a good amount of similarities.

I agree with this. Execution is the most important factor. Doesn't matter how creative someone is if their players can't execute.

Serious question. Did Canada's offense have a bad week while here at Pitt. During the regular season?

That's not the question. The question is did his 2015 NC State offense have any bad weeks? The answer is yes-two. Such that the NC State fans were happy when he was fired and some of our fans mad when he was hired.

Should we have relied on those two games and the fans' comments or should we trust our head coach to make the decision? It is his career on the line after all.

I have a hard time believing NC State fans were glad to see him leave. Considering NC State's offense was hardly their problem while Canada was there. Especially, when they put up 40 points on the National Champ runner up that year in Clemson.

I thought the reason why he wasn't popular was due to the constant looking at other jobs.

Only if you believe that was a real good faith offer and not just public relations smokescreen.

Considering the source of our departing "win the press conference " ad...i would bet on the latter.

I think Pitt and Pirates run things identical to be honest.

I think the NW game had a lot to do with him not as focused due to him knowing he is going to LSU
It had a lot more to do with a guy who was going in for an easy TD slipping and going down short of the goal line , another guy who dropped a perfect TD pass, and our QB and stud RB going out with injury.

I don't see how anyone could blame Canada for not putting enough points on the board or accuse him of lacking focus given the circumstances.

It was a bad effort all the way around but as compared to some game plans Canada prepared this year, the plan for NW was pretty uninspiring. The execution by the players was plain sloppy!
