Could the UNC "meaningless" win to end the season versus NC State have "meant" the difference?

Did UVA’s slaughter of ND gdt them in?

Yep I couldn’t say anything before but we got bumped because the committed preferred recency bias and obviously we just weren’t very good down the stretch.

Tough one as we were generally thought as “in” and not even a true bubble team while a team like LSU isn’t expected in but gets a 2 seed and Bama was a shocking inclusion
Can’t use that as an excuse when Bama finished the year 3-12

ESPN even thought we were in because we were one of 20 teams set up for a live feed for the reaction!

You guys know how much I hate to say I told you so. Honestly, being this intelligent is a burden. I wished I was wrong more often. There's no surprises when you know college sports like I do.

I said Pitt need to win beat UNC and NC State to get in. I was right. Most of you were not.

I said Pitt needed to throw their ace on 2 weeks rest vs WVU. They ended up missing the NCAAT by a game. I was right. Every game at that point mattered the same.

It was COMPLETE incompetence that those kids didnt get vaccinated in early March when vaccines were plentiful. Living on a college campus, playing D1 sports but putting off getting vaccinated? Serves those kids right. They dont deserve to make the NCAAT. And it serves the Pity coaching staff and administration right. Covid is running rampant on Pitt's campus, vaccines are available everywhere, Pitt baseball is rolling along but no one thought it would be a good idea to help those kids obtain vaccines.

What a disgrace!
I’d say we get left out even if we beat state.Remember a couple years ago when softball got hosed?Went all the way to the finals and were within one strike of beating the eventual national champion FSU? We were left out and they put ND in instead.

How can you blame vaccines? The general population wasn’t even eligible for a vaccine until mid-April. That group is only now becoming fully vaccinated
That is total crap. Me and many people I know who dont fall in ANY priority group have been vaccinated by March. These kids could have found places offering vaccines to anybody incredibly easy. I have said this 100 times. It was complete negligence by the players, staff, and administration. A Covid pause in mid-April was unacceptable. Every single player could have been vaccinated in early March just like me.

Yeah, it is. We did not play well down the stretch, but with 17 wins against Q1 teams, we should have been in. In fact, we should have got in over UNC who we beat 3 out of 4 times a a just a few days ago.
Nope. They didnt deserve it. They refused to get vaccinated, wouldn't stop partying and ended up with Covid.

Since beating UNC on April 17, the team won THREE.....THREE!!!! games the rest of the season. They won 3 games in 44 days. You dont make the NCAA Tournament if you win 3 games in the final 44 days. Baseball just wasnt as important to these guys.

Probably one of the top 64, but thought had to beat state to have a chance, maybe 10% without it. The perception of the swoon doomed them.

Agree we needed to make the semis. We also would have helped ourselves tremendously if we’d have at least taken a game at Wake. We’d have gone from 10th to 5th place.

There were two teams in the ACC clearly worse than everyone else, Wake and BC. That was two of our last three series. We should have/needed to go 4-2 at worst in those games. 5-1 shouldn't have been out of the question. We actually went 2-4.

That just wasn't good enough against teams like that. It's the main reason that our RPI dropped from around 20 to 50 by the end of the season.

Not sure I remember a bubble Pitt team in any sport that I felt deserved the NCAAT less than this team. Their season ended April 17. That 42-17 team got completely robbed I thought.

Unc in over Pitt is crazy especially after just beating them this week having more quality wins and beating them in the regular season series. How do they not compare the last couple of teams against each other and determine Unc gets the nod over pitt
Pitt was severely punished for their finish. Pitt and UNC records were similar. Pitt went 3-1 vs them and had 17 Q1 wins to 13 but again, Pitt only won 3 games in the final 44 days. Its hard to do any worse than that. I also think they looked at their mid-April Covid pause as a team who didnt "want it" badly enough. No reason to not be vaccinated or at least to be super careful by mid-April when cases were going down.

Pitt had some really good wins and a better overall resume than some people who were let in. Yes Alabama played a tough schedule but they also lost most of those games. Pitt has some huge series wins over tournament teams. And if you want to blame the finish, take a look at how Alabama finished - not much better. I would love to hear the committee's explanation of how Alabama is more deserving than Pitt because they simply aren't.

Looking at their losses, they lost to Vandy, LSU, Miss State, Florida and Tennessee, 4 of those being regional hosts.

We lost to WVU, BC, NC State, and Wake Forest, only one of those being a tourney team.

Bama's RPI was 33. Pitt was 50. Bama won 9 games since April 17. Pitt won 3. Its not hard. Pitt ended its season in mid-April. They have nobody to blame but themselves

That is total BS. The players were not eligible to get vaccines until late April at the earliest. At least in PA. I was lucky to get on a list and was finished with 2nd dose mid March. I was in the first group of people being vaccinated.
I was in group 1A and I was on the phone and computer several hours a day before finding a place to get my first dose. I traveled 2 hours to get my vaccines. Many others were later than I was. These were people with age over 70 and risk factors.

I have said ten million times that me and my whole extended family very easily got vaccines in March. They were EVERYWHERE. Pharmacies posting on social media that they needed people to come in or they would have to throw out doses. For my 2nd dose, they actually called me the day of to make sure I was coming in because if not, they'd have to find someone else to vaccinate. In mid-March, some nurses had to go next door to a youth baseball scrimmage to see if anyone wanted a vaccine.

THEY WERE EVERYWHERE.

The Pitt baseball team didnt take Covid or vaccines seriously enough and that's why they are sitting at home. A Covid pause in mid to late April is inexcusable. How many teams had a pause later than them? Probably not many if any

RPI is a really poor metric to use this year but the committee definitely relied upon it with the top 40 RPI teams making the tournament so that was probably the single biggest factor. Also have to agree that Pitt has no one to blame but themselves- went from one of the 20 pre-selected host sites to not making the field - OUCH!

I hate RPI but all the committees in all the sports always rely heavily on it.

April 17 - Pitt was ranked #16 and in the discussion for a Top 16 national seed and host site. Then they won 3 games the rest of the season. Its 100% on them.

I was going to respond to his post about how players “put off getting vaccinated” but it was so stupid I couldn’t muster up the effort. Thanks for doing it.

It's beyond stupid. And as a result he has, for the most part, been ignored. So he keeps repeating himself hoping that someone...anyone...will reply to his idiocracy.

Why is it stupid? Had they been vaccinated in March like me and everyone I know, they would be in the NCAA Tournament.

It's another one of those things that he thinks if he repeats it enough times someone will believe it.

Maybe even himself.

Do you think if Pitt chose to have its team vaccinated in March, they would have made the NCAA Tournament?

a) Yea
b) No

There is no question they could have as I've said a million times, vaccines were bountiful by March and anyone could have gotten one. I was shocked that even my Trump-loving sister got it in late Feb/March. She heard through social media that a local pharmacy had some extras so she walked in and got it. She swore she would never get it.

Where do you live? You certainly could not do that in western PA.

YES

YOU

COULD

I am not lying. ANYBODY, and I mean ANYBODY could have walked into specific pharmacies by early March and gotten vaccinated. You just had to know which ones were offering it. Everyday I was seeing on social media, "XYZ Pharmacy has a surplus of vaccines and will take anyone for a walk-in appointment today."

All it took was an intern with some social media accounts. For the millionth time, there's no reason why me and everyone I know was vaccinated in March but the Pitt Partyin' Panthers were not.

SMF was in the 70+ age bracket so he got it right away and assumed those 18-22 year old whipper snappers would be too far behind.

You are so out of touch with young people and college athletics with regards to COVID.

College athletes all over the country partied the whole way through the pandemic. And many still don’t have the vaccine or won’t until they are forced too.

Just the way it is. Quit making a stupid point that’s not realistic.

I qualified early because I’m in education and I still couldn't get the 2nd shot until mid-April in Pittsburgh. No college students were lining up to get it en masse in March. Saying that they were, in this area at least, is a total fabrication.

Not close. I wasnt in any priority group and neither was any of friends/family who easily got it in March.

I didn't say college kids were getting vaccinated in March (though my cousin did). I said if Pitt wanted its players vaccinated in March, they very easily could have. I could have found them a few pharmacies if they asked me.

Of course I know college kids partied the whole way through but if you are a D1 athlete in the midst of an NCAAT-type season, it is your responsibility to avoid those activities. These guys did not and have nobody to blame but themselves. I hope the parties were worth it.

And I know a high percentage of college kids wont get vaccinated but my assumption is that a very high percentage of D1 athletes WILL because they will be "encouraged" too. I would guess just about every Pitt baseball player is vaccinated before the fall semester. But too little too late. Should have done it in March.

Also, no one has answered my previous question? Did anyone have a Covid pause later than Pitt? There's a reason teams weren't shutting down in mid-April. They were either being very careful or were vaccinated

I think, and I have said this before, that if Pitt had the baseball team (and other athletes) vaccinated in March and the local media got wind of it the shitstorm that it would have created would have been enourmous. Because healthy college students were NOT eligible for vaccines in March. Which you know, but which you continue to ignore because it doesn't fit with the story you want to tell.

I got my first shot on April 1. That was exactly three days after Pennsylvania announced that they were going to open up shots to people who were not in group 1A.

Exactly. I’m a young person and it WAS possible to get them before that.... but only on an individual basis and you had to actively search/work hard to do so.

Acting like they could have just scheduled a bus to take the Pitt baseball team to CVS on March 1st is typical SMF.
