People really need to stop chirping about the last 30 years. Literally no one involved from the Chancellor, to the A.D., to the Head Coach was here for any of that. Since Gallagher took over, he gave the heave-ho to Pederson, made what appears to be a good hire in a head coach who DID do a great deal to change the culture and found a way to win some games in year one, and hired an A.D. who appears to be the polar opposite of his successor.
I'm not a patient person by nature, but at some point you have to realize that only three players that were part of the 2011 recruiting class played yesterday. Five guys from the next class played yesterday.
My point? This is not a veteran team. It's a team made up of spare parts and band-aids in many ways. People aren't going to want to hear this after we had to listen to everyone say "Wanny needs more time" for five years but it's true in this case.
The best teams on Pitt's schedule this year showed that there is a lack of talent on this team overall. Not fast enough, maybe in some cases not big enough, and in some cases just flat out not good enough.
Next year may look a whole lot like this year too. The good news is that the guy that hired the head coach and the guy who "oversees" him seem pretty committed to stability at this point. The bad news is that this could take a few more years to be at the level you need to in order to play with and actually defeat teams like Baylor or Clemson or FSU.
