Ironically, if they had suspended football operations immediately when the scandal broke, actually cleaned house in the athletic department and university and filled the vacancies with individuals outside the incestuous PSU fraternity, and restarted football a year later for the 2013 season, they'd be heading into their 4th year of rebuilding, probably little worse off competitively than they are now, and with a completely different national view of their institution and program. I don't think anyone would have been able to complain or hold any newly revealed issues against them if they had ever shown any sort of real institutional commitment to changing the underlying cultural issues. Unfortunately, the culture of football dominating the university marches along unabated, and the vast majority of their fans and alumni certainly wouldn't have it any other way.
