Based on Penn State's mantra "Pitt's not our Rival... We're Unrivaled....Blah, Blah, Blah " They ran a survey asking what is a bigger rivalry game for Dear 'Ole State: Pitt vs. Penn State or Ohio State vs. Penn State? The results 74.8% of the respondents picked Pitt vs. Penn State.

The missing part? They need to run the survey in Columbus, OH and ask: Who is Ohio State's biggest rival? Michigan or Penn State. I guarantee you that 99.999% of the respondents would answer Michigan.

Given this FACT: I think Pitt and WVU need to focus on cleaning up the unhealthy aspects of their fans in the Rivalry and renew the Pitt - WVU game "Backyard Brawl" on Thanksgiving Weekend. In fact, I think the ACC would be wise to offer WVU admittance to the conference full time.

Pitt and WVU have a great rivalry also and can develop it for the long haul. Let Penn State be "Unrivaled".

I miss the Backyard Brawl, especially that it was over Thanksgiving weekend. If the ACC was ever going to expand, I agree WVU would be a good geographical fit and provide us with a natural rival.

BTW, the only non-Michigan votes in that theoretical poll would be Penn State fans visiting the site and voting.

WV would not get in to the ACC based on academic reputation.

I'm not a fan of non-conference rivals, as I feel the games have no meaning beyond lip service..... however if I had to pick 1 WVU or PSU.... i'd go wvu all day. Those games were fun and you could actually feel the hatred.

The ACC won't accept wvu... I do think we should play wvu versus the nitters.. F'psu.

Agreed WVU without a doubt. Could care less if pitt play ped state ever again. Didnt want this 4 game series from time it was announced. They should have a football anyway.

The game should be played every year. It is pure BS that teams need x amount of home games to make a profit. For how many years teams played 11 games then all of a sudden the NCAA found a money grab and extended the season to 12 games. It is a shame many of the "Rivalry Games" have been killed off by greed. For years Pitt-Penn St was THE game on the schedule. All of a sudden greed takes over and it's not a rivalry anymore.

Well it's not. I'm tired of Penn State and their 30 Branch Campuses and 100,000 Branch Campus Dummies acting high and mighty. The truth is they are "Unrivaled" in the B1G. Michigan vs. Ohio State will never be replaced by Penn State vs. either. Michigan State's rival is Michigan. Wisconsin and Minnesota are big rivals, Indiana vs. Purdue. Maybe Penn State and Rutgers can become B1G Rivals?

Pitt and its fans need to move on. The Backyard Brawl is a Great Rivalry, let's renew it for 100 years.

I'm a fan of non-conference rivals because realignment ruined the conferences. I get pumped for the VT game, but that isn't a two-way street. Beyond that, there really isn't an ACC rival for Pitt. If WVU was ever admitted into the ACC, the Backyard Brawl would instantly be one of the top games in the conference each year.

Agreed but at the time Louisville was let in, they had something to offer the old guard (NC & Duke), a good basketball pedigree & a good football team.

The Reality is: It's not about Academics. Academics is a nice "Cover" for the Semi-Pro sports that P5 football and basketball are. Louisville was let in to add stability and strengthen the ACC in Football. They didn't need anymore basketball prowess. They have done that in groves, delivering a Heisman Trophy winner to the Conference in their first 4 years. WVU would add good football and basketball teams. However, they would add an elite rivalry "The Backyard Brawl" more expose for the upcoming ACC Network. Again, FSU and U of L aren't Academic Powerhouses when admitted but are improving. WVU would be the same.

The ACC has 2 National Champions and 2 Heisman Winners in the past 4 years. Not too shabby for a "Basketball Conference". .... "Bring your A Game"

While I'm inclined to agree with you, U of L and FSU weren't Academic Heavyweights when they were admitted to the ACC.
Academics may or may not be an issue, but once Pitt joined WVU had absolutely no chance of ever being on the league because it would bring absolutely no tv's.

Maybe close to the truth. However, the Backyard Brawl would bring TV's and their games against VT and U of L would bring TV's. It makes too much sense to not do it.

You guys are right noone down here in WVa have TVs so WVU will never be invited to the ACC.We do have transistor radios though and listen to every Wvu game. You guys are right every conference is based on academics and athletics has nothing to do with who is in them!!!lol

Pizzaboy,

I and many other Pitt fans are advocating WVU in the ACC, which I think will happen as it makes sense. So Chillax. No one is cutting on WVU.

It's the market, the lack of it.
The two markets there is any wvu spillover in were already accounted for by VA/VT, and then Pittsburgh by Pitt.

I don't like this post. I LOVE it. I can't believe people still think "academics" have anything to do with this big business. Ivy League? Sure. No other conference. Even the vaunted Big Ten. You think they added friggin Nebraska for its "academics"? Let's stop doing this. WVU has no market. It should be a part of the ACC, it has natural rivals. WVU's academics aren't any worse than Louisville's.

Why advocate for WV? If the shoe were on the other foot do you think they would care if we were spending money and time flying across country to play volleyball? Our admin at the time took care of Pitt, theirs didn't. Could you imagine if it were the other way around? I know for some of you, Pitt can't do anything right, even when it does!

FWIW -- the "market argument" will be dead by the time next contract deals are up. Pitt, Maryland, the U (Big City College teams) allowed "conference networks" to force their way on to those markets cable packages.... but what Big10 Network wanted for example was to show more PSU games in DC (they don't really think anyone watches MD here in DC where I live).

WVU has some of the highest rated ESPN telecasts (particularly when the Big East had the old Thursday night package). WVU gets a lot of eyeballs on the TV when we play (we have a large diaspora out of state). We just don't offer the conferences a "market" to argue/barter/trade with Comcast/Time Warner etc. over.

As ESPN is learning that old model is dying -- as we move to "ala carte" TV, streaming (PS Vue TV etc).... it won't be about "bundling the Big10 network to Comcasts DC sports package anymore" etc.... It will be about viewers willing to "purchase" the WVU or Pitt game this weekend. I'd be willing to argue in that model WVU would offer more than Pitt (or Maryland or BC or Miami).

It will be interesting to see how that impacts future realignment. Does the Big 12 (without a network) become a leader in PPV streaming options and thus WVU agrees to remain tied to it....? Does it impact other leagues? The SEC?

Hey guys thanks for actually saying some decent things about WVU.I wish we were in the ACC.It could only happen if the Big12 collapses and I doubt it would happen then.Travel doesn't affect the football team at all, just the fans? Now BB is different and Huggy hates it.I miss the Pitt,Va Tech and Psu games in all sports. At least the Backyard Brawl is back in men's basketball.

in all fairness it is a false choice because it did not offer a "none of the above".

WVU has a natural rivalry with Pitt, Louisville, and Virginia Tech. They would leave the B12 in an instant to join the ACC if they were able to without financial penalty.

Penn St unrivaled sounds like they have a problem, PSU apparently isn't good enough to stack up against anyone. PSU was lucky the B10 didn't figure out when admitting them that they could not rival any of their members.
Of course Penn St has a point no one can rival their record of incarceration of University / Athletic administrators.

The ACC didn't want WVU because they didn't offer any new tele
If the ACC were to add teams, then it needs to add 2 to keep an even balance within divisions.

Two teams that would add enough via new TV markets to justify watering down the payouts to two more schools.

I just don't see WVU making the grade.

Really? Must be why they have over twice as many National Championships than any member since joining. Who's beaten OSU more than Penn State?

The fact is, over 109k were at Beaver Stadium on Saturday. It's a rivalry, and I wish all three, Pitt, WV, and Penn State played every year. It was three of the best rivalry games there were. The fan bases love the games, and they, for the most part were great games.

Like most Wvu fans I'm not too smart!I really don't think the # of TV sets are going to come into play in the future if conference realignment happens.Times are a changing my friends and WVU has as many loyal fans as lots of schools and they actually watch Wvu games.Take Rutgers do you think they have as many fans watching their games as Wvu?Just because New Jersey has more TVs doesn't mean they're tuned to Rutgers football.Again I might be wrong on this stuff.

Sorry Chains it's not about academics anymore it's about the product on the fields and courts.People don't turn on their TV sets to watch the debate teams.
