People are wrongly using a Return on Investment thesis for a Stadium.

We're talking about commerce IN the City of Pittsburgh here. Not the burbs, not WV, not Cambria County.
You and your clone can act like the money showing up on gameday is money that would just be spend elsewhere in the city all you want, but you're wrong.

You can keep pretending that all you want. It is simply factually incorrect. Pretty much every economic study not paid for by someone with their hand out has shown it time and time again. I've linked to several of them here just a couple days ago. Stadiums have a near zero net economic effect.

And so is every single economic analysis on the topic .

Ha OK, so where is this economic analysis claiming these Steeler fans would be driving into the City of Pittsburgh to spend a bunch of money even if the Steelers weren't there?

Oddly enough, I don't know many Steeler season ticket holders who are driving into the city on Sundays when the Steelers aren't at Heinz, but that's just anecdotal. Maybe you and Joe know better?

Stadiums are definitely not an economic benefit for most cities -- maybe all? -- but you completely botched trying to explain why. And you tried to sound so smart doing it lol. Vintage Souf.

Where did I say there was an economic benefit to stadiums?
You two have to be related. Have to.
Swab your cheeks and send in the sample. Seriously.

It's not maybe all.
It's all.

And the explanation I gave is why. Hint , all about substitutes.

And for every tourist dollar spent on steeler Sundays , remember there is a local dollar being spent in an another city on Away games .

And given local supply and demand , may be a net negative out flow.

And no, the opportunity costs of the real estate isn't why .

If the Steelers would ever leave Pittsburgh, Pitt would just take over Heinz and reconfigure it to more fit Pitt's needs.

Shell is about to spend maybe $5 billion on an Ethane Cracker in Western Pennsylvania.

Do you think they completed a return on investment before deciding to undertake that project.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

yes, absolutely they did.

If memory serves me, I believe the T extension to the North Shore was funded largely by a federal grant that was tied to that specific project and had the Port Authority not built it, those funds would have been lost. Don't make me Google that before a large coffee...but I think thats correct.

Casino, Pirates, Starkist, discovery zone, theaters......8 Steeler games and 6 Pitt games aren't making it happen on the north side. That's why the Steelers could give a squat about parking. If you build it, they will come..and park anywhere they can.

You do realize just about every spot they take away they are replacing with a spot in a garage, right?

And it's quite a bit easier to park elsewhere if you have a boat or train pull up to the doorstep of the stadium. That's not the case in Oakland, and is one of the top three reasons why this is DOA.

Pitt and upmc aren't the same entity. Think you need to realize this.

Ok fine. You think the steelers are more important economically to the city than cmu, Pitt, Duquesne, etc?

And I know they aren't the same thing, but The UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH medical center would not be here without having the UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH.

Got to love yinzers who think the entire city is dependent on a football team that plays home games 10 times a year.

Again, the economic impact of losing the Pirates would be about 8 times greater, but the city would still go on just fine.

think we are arguing two different things. No, i don't think the steelers create more jobs than the 3 biggest universities in the city combined..

No offense, but that's exactly the type of thinking that we don't need and have had for far too long in Pittsburgh.
Dem rule for 80 years +. Should have been done 30 years ago. And the Rooney tunnel snarled Stanwix Street for over 3 years.

He does.....listed separately.

Correct. But the plan had to be in place and they had to make a pitch. Since the stadiums were involved and the result would help the Rooney's and Nuttings, the plan was ready and they made it happen. However, after the money was given we dropped the part of the extension that went into the Northside neighborhood where people live. See how that worked? Someone should be held accountable for that.

I'm not arguing with you. It's very easy to see who benefited from the Connector. Hint Hint, it wasn't any of the residents. The funds spent on that project both local and federal approached extortion money. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see a line running further north where the city continues to grow. Even though East is where it is really needed. Let alone a connection to something as seemingly insignificant as...oh, I don't know...an Airport maybe? lol

What ticks me off about the t extension is that one, it didn't connect into the neighborhood, but two that alco actually has had the nerve to continue to raise prices on their lots and garages on the northside. I'm pretty sure that before the t they were losing money over there, and now they are almost at capacity every weekday.

In general, parking costs in Pittsburgh are pretty extreme compared to other similar sized cities.

im going to ask a stupid question.. Who benefitted from the T extension?? Obvious answers are the steelers and pirates but really, did the really benefit from it? Steelers were selling out regardless, buccos attendance has increased but because they are good, not because people can take the trolley.. If anyone benefitted, its the sports fans attending games and people who work in north shore.. I don't see the conspiracy here fellas.

UPMC is a Pitt spinoff. No Pitt = no UPMC.
im not arguing with you paco, still licking my wounds from last week.. I agree with whatever you say.. Pitt girl is explaining it better than me, for what pitt brings to this city, it seems they don't get the political influence that they deserve.. Just my outside perspective on the topic, far from an expert on this.

ALCO.

If they can figure out how to extend the line to the North Hills without putting stops in places where 'those people' live, then it might happen.

are we turning this into a race thread?? Nice.. love the awkwardness of racial threads.. Continue please..

There are a lot of people who now park in ALCO lots and take a free T ride into town that never would have parked on the North Side without the T.

pardon my ignorance but wouldn't they be in direct competition of this extension? If I owned parking lots, I wouldn't want another mode of transportation for commuters..

ALCO controls most if not all the lots around the stadiums. With the t there, people park in those lots, pay alco, then ride downtown for free. Those lots used to be at 50% capacity.

ok, well that explains it.. I work in the area and never would consider people doing this but it makes sense...

I know, it annoys plenty of folks when bringing up race, but I look at the current t lines it's hard not to draw certain conclusions.

We already got soaked for $900 million for the airport, which is running below 50% usage, and will be forever. Too small a region to need 100 gates. No nonstops to the left coast.

So even if the Penguins were not playing game 5 thursday night, hundreds of thousands of people would have been out spending money hand over fist somewhere?

No. Some of them would have put the money in a Mason jar and buried it in their back yard. Others simply would have lit the money on fire and used it as kindling in their fireplace. A few may have stuffed the money in their mattress but that can lead to a poor nights sleep, so most folks now a days frown upon that sort of thing.
