Pitt Favored by 9 vs UPS

-Penn State covered against the spread 3 times last year. They lost every other game against the spread. Putting points on Penn State would make Vegas look dumb, since Penn State was awful last year. Considering that, a brand new QB, and an incredibly weak looking D-line, it makes perfect sense.
I think the mobility of the new QB will add another dimension Hack lacked. Expect a ton of read options. We'll see how successful that becomes. And yes, if Pitt has success offensively, will be ramming it between the tackles. Hoping to see James Conner at 100% and see what we have to counter. I think he has a good day. We might have to add a guy in the box to have extra coverage in the gaps. Hey, if Pitt covers by 9 or more, I'll be the first to come over and comment on your win. But seriously, you really think that's a wise spread?

Both teams will be 'box' conscious with the RBs involved. It may come down to who makes plays in the passing game. Pitt will look to power running game, PSU to read option. Both defenses will be tested in the run game. As far as the spread, the beginning line is only the starting point. My guess is that the line will be much lower at game time. Most will expect a close game, one in which both teams will be 'finding themselves' early in the season and will be emotional with a renewed rivalry.

A key to winning the game is to hit Barkley hard. Watch the Georgia bowl game tape. They pounded him hard when they tackled him and after a while he started going to his knees quick with little second effort. Most Nitters go to their knees quick but I mean this in a football sense.
He's a difference maker so if PITT doesn't wrap him up he could have a big day and we don't want that.

If State Farm hasn't upgraded their offensive line from that sieve they had last year, Pitt's front seven is going to have a field day.

You will miss Hackenberg much more than you think going forward. I know he stunk under the domiator but at least he had the arm where he could stretch a defense and could take deep shots going down the field which would keep a defense honest.

If you don't have that threat defenses can jam the line and make it harder for Barkley with that offensive line they have. Defenses will key on Barkley and make the quarterback beat them.

Personally I think it's an unwise spread to answer your question...but I've come to expect the worst. Been a fan since I was a little kid. Pitt usually falls on its face when the stage is big. That has a lot to do with past administrations unwilling to deal with great coaches, whether it be salary demands, egos, etc. But there's hints that maybe this new administration is different and Narduzzi is the right guy. He went his first season with barely any brain farts or Same Ole Pitt WTF moments. Pretty impressive for someone learning on the job. We'll see. I think Pitt should win, but I'm not convinced they will. Lucky for us, your coach is absolutely God awful.
