CoachPat Narduzzi wasn't happy about his team's three unsportsmanlike penalties, but his dissatisfaction wasn't only turned toward his players. “You go back and look at the penalties and go, ‘Wow, really? I've seen a lot worse not get called.' He added, “We'll be little angels this week (at Oklahoma State). Try to do everything perfect, I guess.”

Narduzzi received several other calls but tried not to dwell on them. “I haven't had a whole lot of time to have much contact with the outside world,” he said. “I know everyone is happy out there. But if you focus on that, they (Oklahoma State) will punch you in the mouth the next week.”

Two more Pitt freshmen — running backChawntez Moss and wide receiver Aaron Mathews of Clairton — participated in the Penn State game, making three (including defensive tackle Amir Watts) who won't be redshirted. Narduzzi said he put himself on the spot Saturday, sending a text message to Clairton coach Wayne Wade, promising to use Mathews. “I said, ‘He's getting in this weekend, keep your eyes open, don't miss him.' ” Neither Moss nor Mathews had a carry or a reception.

Among the many congratulatory calls Narduzzi received after beating Penn State was one from ACC commissioner John Swofford. He refused to reveal details of the conversation. “Can't tell you, personal.” The ACC is 4-3 in nonconference games against Power 5 schools.
