Pitt vs Duquesne… and Savannah Bananas

nothing better than eating ribs at noon on a 90 degree day with zero seating or chairs (or shade) outside of gate A at accrisure...

with the lines to get the ribs right in front of the only walkway to get into the stadium because they put up make-shift fencing to bottle-neck everyone to the same spot...
🤣

Waiting in line for ribs for 45 minutes and then having to eat it while sitting in the grass is an usual Pittsburgh tradition.

I remember going the first year it occurred. It was great, no one really heard of it so it was empty and you could pretty much just walk up to any booth. And prices weren't too crazy. Obviously it has caught on now but that first year was nice.

it's such an idiotic location and timing.. always for a home labor day pitt game. WHY have it at the stadium and in the worst location ever. They put those concrete barriers up right next to it then put up more fencing and RIGHT in front of the stadium. Again, with zero benches..

There are a million better places to hold this. crowding it in to that little corner is so dumb..

i saw this below on the Savannah Bananas schedule. so assuming it's correct, the baseball game will be at 7pm which means a nooner for pitt v dukes

All games start at 7pm local time excluding Sunday games. Sunday games in Savannah & Minor League stadiums begin at 1pm. Sunday games in MLB stadiums begin at 3:30pm.

Ribs are so overrated.
im like 2 out of 4 on making pork ribs. i made the mistake of "over thinking" this process. you hear all this crap about how to make em from these so called expert rednecks and they make it out to be like open heart surgery..

the more complicated you make it, the bigger pia it is. i was doing apple vinegar and all kinds of stupid Sh*t for no reason whatso ever..

Just put a ton of rub on it, cut X's into the membrane, dont even worry about removing it. and keep it on 300 tops and expect 1/2 your day to be wasted standing by the grill.

but yes, very over rated..

I don’t get the phenomenon. It’s baseball. No matter what you do you can’t make it entertaining.
It is great if you prefer your baseball players dancing around to ABBA music instead of playing baseball.

I like them in short tik tok or reels videos. Can't imagine an entire evening of that schtick.

The Bananas will be the best entertainment at PNC Park all season. They usually bring in local legends as special guests so be on the lookout for who? Freddy Sanchez… Russell Martin… Andy Van Slyke?
That's pretty slick if they land Slyke. SRO crowd at PNC might outdraw the Pitt game even with Duquesne as the opponent. I agree on the entertainment factor. Pirates will ride Paul Skenes to as many no decisions or bullpen blowups as wins.

It will be close, but that Duquesne bump (about 150 extra people) should put Pitt slightly ahead if it's a nice day.
I think max capacity at PNC is around 41K including SRO tickets. The Bananas game should be a sell out, so it will be really close as to who draws more - Pitt or Savanah. Pitt could get the edge though. I think that the novelty of Pitt playing Duquesne will be enough of a draw to get them over the 41K mark.

Jared Jones already rumored to be dealing with potential tommy john surgery lol. We cant have nice things..

It won't shock me one bit if he has a tear and need surgery and that the Pirates will just baby him and try to rehab it for the first half of the season so that he will end up missing 2 full seasons instead of just 1 full season.

I saw a clip yesterday of a guy hitting a home run, with a cape on his back, running around the bases like a buffoon. This was one clip and I found it incredibly unfunny and cliched/try hard type antics. Imagine seeing that numerous time over 9 innings? I don’t get it.

Total cringe fest. That people actually seek this out is concerning.

I live in Hilton Head. Savannah Banana’s are sold out. Hard ticket to get. Will be the best thing PNC park has seen in many a year.
Georgia-South Carolina Communities love them.
i grew up in savannah. it's absurd the phenomen. used to play at grayson stadium. you cannot get a ticket period.

Have you heard of kids? Would you go see the Globetrotters with your adult friends? No. This is the Globetrotters of baseball. It's essentially a show with some baseball mixed in. Kids love it. My guess is 75% of adults are there with their kids.

Makes sense.

Wait, do some of you think this was going to be a late game for TV or something? There was never any doubt in my mind that this would be a nooner.

Saturday ACC games:

FSU/Bama, LSU/Clem, Syr/Ten will be ABC/ESPN.

That leaves Duke/Elon, SMU/East Texas A&M, Pitt/Duq, BC/Fordham, Lou/EKU, UVa/Coastal Carolina.

3 of those games get ACCN. 1 may get ESPNU. The 2 that aren't televised will get ESPN+, in which case the home team sets the time. So if Pitt/Duq landed on ESPN+, they could set the time and my guess would be 3:30 or maybe they'd do an early evening of 6:00. It'll be interesting because apparently the 🍌 don't get first dibs on parking so Pitt could play whenever they want and make the Banana fans fight for parking.

My guess is ACCN goes with

noon: Pitt/Duq
3:30: Lou/EKU
8:00: SMU/ETAMU

ESPNU - UVa/CCU

Or like, I always say, squeeze in 4 games. 11AM, 2:15, 6:45, 9:15 with SMU starting at 8:15 local

Doesn’t the CW carry ACC games or is it only in conference games? The reason I ask if CW does carry the games the Pitt/Duquesne game could be on that network,

Yes. I forgot about that. Their days and times vary though. Not exactly sure they get a game in Week 1.

Their origin story is amazing. They were basically a college wood bat team that started up after the Single-A Savannah Sand Gnats moved because the stadium was so old.

Only barnstormers I’d pay to see would have been the Josh Gibson’s and negro league players of 85 years ago. And then I would have loved to have a couple drinks and listen to some jazz at the Crawford Grille. I’m a sucker for nostalgic stuff like that. I’d have loved to see what the Hill District was like in the 40’s.
I studied the history of that era on the Hill District. To give you an idea of what it looked like in the Hill District, there were tons of Black people. If you don't believe me, look it up.

the story of the hill district is a fascinating one. i was stuck at the local library a few years back when my kids were younger, before i got them a cell phone and they liked to read books, yeah, that long ago. anyways, rainy saturday afternoon, kids are up there doing some community kid thing so im there so why not, grab a book..

Any who, was about the hill district, history, and talked about how the whole civic arena really was a detriment big time on the community. Sadly im too young to remember the hill district in it's glory days but it seemed like a hell of a community in it's prime..

I took a class at PITT called "the History of Black Pittsburgh". It touched upon all facets of the Hill District community (athletics, arts, and business). The area definitely was screwed over by the arena, but there were also other social issues that caused its demise. The one thing that has been consistent to this day is Black people. There are still a lot of black people in the Hill District. A lot.

That was a lot to say nothing.

It doesn't matter. There are only a handful of people who will make time to watch this game on TV on Labor Day weekend.

it's actually kind of nice to have the annual FCS exhibition game scheduled on labor day weekend and not later in september. Gives us zero guilt to go do "labor day" stuff like getting out of the area for a long weekend and not having to miss a real football game..

I don't have a problem with it. Just think it's ridiculous to pretend like any of this noise matters. May not even be on TV when it's all said and done.

Yeah, pretty likely I won't bother to look for a school until later in the day. Pretty certain one of the local Nits will cover the game from the perspective of "has Pitt really sunk this far" for playing the game against the courageous halflings from Duquesne.

I love having the FCS game first because I am excited for Pitt football (due to some disorder) no matter what. We could be playing Bishop Sycamore and I'd go. But when that FCS game is later in the season, it fills like a complete uninteresting scrimmage.

it's an uninteresting scrimmage regardless of when it's played, that's why i love it being early. get it out of the way so we can start the real season.

The labor day weekend thing is a plus as you dont care missing it while you do "labor day weekend" things..

That's why everyone craps on the SEC. No one cares that you play crap schools cuz everyone else does too, it's the fact that they do it in like week 9.

yeah, SEC does it as more of an "off week" later in the season to rest their starters and heal up for the last remaining game or two.. its almost like an NFL team with a late season bye week.

They can get away with it with that football crazed culture down there..

It is an uninteresting game Duzz isn’t going to show to much especially on offense. If you don’t win big then you’re questioning the whether or not Pitt is any good. If they do win big then everyone says well they should’ve won big because you’re playing an FCS team. It’s a win for the FCS team because the guaranteed money they get funds their athletic department for the year. Duquesne gets money and Pitt gets a warm up win
