Pitt vs Miss St game thread

Yikes. Tough to take credit for that final possession.

Mississippi State is the worst shooting team I have ever seen. Is there a rogue team manager effing with their contact lens prescriptions?
Dude step away from the site. You sit here and say Pitt sucks and they didn’t win because of their achievement. What a miserable person you must be. Last time I looked Burton made a very tough shot for the lead and the other team missed an open 3. It’s not easy to knock down every 3 point open look

Gutsy win to find a way much like they did all year. So great to see Pitt get out of this game and see their name advance in that bracket and play on Thurs/Friday especially in the middle of the afternoon where Pitt’s game is scheduled after 3 o clock.

You are wasting your time with him. He is a walking enema.

I said we botched that final play defensively because we did. Puff out your little chest (mine is thick, full, and developed, btw, in case you wanted to know) all you want, but we couldn't have played it much worse.

hate to be negative after a game but their poor rebounding almost cost them the game. JB and Nike watched the shot instead of boxing out and gave the Ms st guy a Great shot at a tip. That’s coaching. I don’t tnink they practice rebounding
We were gonna get slaughtered on the boards in this one no matter what, and that’s even with Fede. That’s not a new issue, and it’s primarily a personnel issue.

So it’s wrong to pack the middle to prevent their best inside player from getting the ball and protecting ball side of the court? When the other team is so poor at shooting 3s then play to their weakness not their strength. And the end result is exactly what it was due to the fact they are not a good 3 point shooting team. It’s called taking away the other teams strengths

It's generally wrong to completely lose track of a player and then not box out. Pretty funny that our own coach said we got lucky but you're calling it a strategic work of genius.

For sure it’s personnel. But they give up a number of rebounds because they stand around watching instead of boxing out. That’s coaching The last shot was one and JBs third was another.

Got out rebounded 42 - 25 and still came away with the W. Amazing. Basically, Mississippi State did almost everything better then us except turnovers and shooting. I guess that's why they call it basket ball. Absolutely great game to win. On to Iowa State!

We don’t follow shots or crash from the outside offensively much, but I’m guessing that’s strategic on Capel’s part-he doesn’t want to give up easy run-outs off misses. Defensively we just don’t have any horses from a rebounding perspective. We don’t have any players that can create their own space and move a guy.

I know this seems to be lost on some of our posters (not suggesting you’re one of them) but that team was a lot bigger, stronger, more physical and more athletic than us at every position. We were gonna get killed on the boards no matter what.

My post was in response to a poster saying how Pitt got lucky because Miss St missed an open shot and a put back....although your grasp of the obvious is impressive.

If you look way up in the sky you might see my point going way over your head.

I was agreeing with you by kind of mocking him. But whatever.

We have a flawed team, no doubt and we won’t go tremendously far with that rebounding and defense (whatever the reasons for it). But as we saw tonight with MSU almost all others in the tournament are flawed as well, just differently so (for example, MSU played kind of like one of Jamie’s later Pitt teams). So somebody has to be the winner in every game. May as well be us for a couple more games at least, until the big payola schools like Duke take over and get what their boosters pay so well for (and my TV set switches to something else).

Seems to me that Pitt missed a few wide open shots down the stretch that would have sealed it....but whatever....
Look with under three seconds left for a player to get that wide open is ridiculous, it really doesn’t make sense. Of course I am glad he missed but that is a reflection of something else that I won’t discuss now

I agree. I saw Elliott out of position and was yelling to guard the open man in the corner, but he didn't hear me. That was exactly the play they wanted, and they even had a good shot at another putback in the last second, but missed. We were EXTREMELY lucky they missed those 2 shots. But we made shots when we had to in spite of being outrebounded by 100 or so.

We'll need to play much better defense and rebound better if we hope to beat Iowa State. It's a winnable game for Pitt.

They were guarding a lob to the rim or a low block entry with Tolu Smith and Miss St is a poor outside shooting team. The thing that I didn't like was giving up the offensive rebound

Don’t disagree with any of that but there is no excuse to be standing around on defense and giving up rebounds because they are not boxing out and often times watching the shot without trying to get position. That can be improved with practice so they don’t give up as many easy offensive boards. To the other team.

Yeah, Capel himself said we were very lucky their 2 shots at the end didn't go in. He knew how out of position Elliott was. That was a very glaring breakdown on defense. He wasn't out of position on purpose.

What a battle! What a win! We didn’t have Fede and had about 25% of Burton and still won. Iowa St. is similar statistically. It’s a decent matchup. So happy that we have another game with this team!

Pitt has been standing around on defense and giving up rebounds and putbacks for the past 5 or 6 games. Those are mental errors and coachable. I hope Capel gets some of that fixed before Friday.

See with the current makeup of the front court I can understand the rebound as we really don’t have bulk except for Hinson. Letting a guard shoot a wide open three at this level is a recipe for defeat most of the time. And if he makes that shot the tone of this board is completely different as more would be focusing on what I am looking at.

But hey they won and will play another game this season

My last thought....I'm absolutely thrilled that we won that game....that said, I have to admit I feel for Mississippi State fans a bit. If they had even one shooter on that team the game would not have been close. Imagine how sick you would feel if you were an MSU fan watching that wide open three go long AND a wide open tip miss. That's gonna leave a mark.

I hear ya'. They are us a while ago in the NCAAT, losing games because we did so many things right but missed too many shots or couldn't make that last shot. I'm sure when they saw their guard so wide open and no one within 10 feet of him and shooting a 3, they knew he'd make it. Then the missed putback that they were making all night didn't go in. That's gut wrenching for them.

Ok…but if we had made the foul shots we usually do…had our starting center…etc etc

Two flawed teams, and somebody had to survive.

We needed it worse. And they still have NCAA baseball season coming. The biggest show in Starkvegas.

I thought it was notable that they kept shooting em, despite not making em. Not sure that was the best coaching job I’ve ever witnessed
Yeah they really didn’t make much of an attempt to feed smith and went away from driving to the hoop. Also don’t understand why they say him so much when he wast in foul trouble

Exactly. I didn't like that the corner shot was so wide open due to Elliott not closing out, but that was probably their 4th option on the play. We defended their primary options well and made them go to something they are not good at, shooting a 3 to win the game. Now the lack of box outs that led to the follow tip, that shouldn't happen.
