The last dual of the season is tomorrow night, we should win this one and end on a high note. Some tough potential matchups that could make a difference come ACCs.
I will have a preview up later tonight.
Pitt Probables:
125: No. 24 Nick Babin
133: Tyler Chappell
141: Anthony Santaniello OR Briar Priest
149: No. 23 Finn Solomon
157: No. 21 Dylan Evans
165: No. 33 Jared Keslar
174: No. 21 Luca Augustine
184: No. 13 Reece Heller OR Chase Kranitz
197: No. 10 Mac Stout
285: No. 14 Dayton Pitzer
125: #24 Babin v. #31 Roller
This should be a good one. Roller is 12-5 on the year and has some similar results to Babin. His TF loss to Mac Gallagher (who Babin beat) shows how he can be vulnerable at times, but based on their overall results and the fact they have never hit I will call this a toss up at 125. Toss Up
133: Chappell v. #33 Porter
Porter is ranked 33rd, with two good wins over this season, over Kyle Burwick in November and Ethan Bergnic in January. When it comes to common opponents him and Chappell have very similar results, his loss to NC State backup Hohman who is 8-6 on the year makes me think this one is on the table for Tyler. Based on experience and time at the weight I will lean Porter, but there is chance for an upset. UVA Fav
141: Ant or Priest v. #19 Cedeno
It is interesting that both these guys are listed here. I am curious if that means there is chance Briar gets the postseason nod, whoever goes here I want it to be the postseason starter as the improvement in ACC seed is worth it and the chance to get a feel for the guy. Cedeno was at 157 last year where he went 11-3. This year he is 10-1 down at 141 with his only loss being to Latona. He has 5 or so ranked wins on the season and has been very solid. He wrestles close matches and either of these guys could beat him, but I have to favor the guy who has been winning those matchups consistently. UVA Fav
149: #23 Solomon v. Roggie/ #33 Gioffre
I don't know who is the starter for UVA, Gioffre was the starter all year but hasn't wrestled in February, while Roggie has gotten the nod every time this month after not wrestling in December or Jan. All of Roggie's matches have been close, even against McNeil, but he does not have any wins of note this season. He beat Quinn Kinner last year (Finn did as well) and he seems to be a tough opponent, but I would expect Solomon to beat him or Gioffre (who does have a really good win over Cross Wasilewski but has no results of note since then) PITT Fav
157: #21 Evans v. Sanko/Gioffre:
Sanko has been the primary 157 for UVA this year. He is 12-9 on the year and has wrestled some good guys close. However, I don't expect him to be a match for Evans, especially since he was 0-2 against Keslar last year, losing by fall both times. Gioffre the larger has gotten some starts (mostly in the first sem) but has not wrestled in over a month. He has some solid wins such as Tyler Badgett, but overall his results do not strike me as someone to pose a threat to Dylan. PITT Fav
First Half: 2 Pitt Fav, 1 Toss, 2 UVA Fav
165: #33 Keslar v. #21 Hamilton
Hamilton shocked everyone last year when he won ACC's then went 2-2 at the big dance. He has continued this momentum this season, he is 8-2 with both his losses being to very high-level guys. His ACC wins have been close, him and Keslar both had 1 takedown matches with Darracott and Church. Keslar has looked really good as the year goes on and it is obvious he wants a trip to Philly. I think this match will be decided in 1 or two exchanges that either guy can win. Toss Up.
174: #21 Augustine v. Contino
Contino has only 11 matches this year and while he is solid and can keep matches close, Luca has much better results against common opponents and I would expect him to win this one. If someone else goes such as 165 backup Stefanelli I still expect Luca to win, but against anyone he faces I wouldn't be surprised to see a closer match as that is his trademark style. PITT Fav
184: #13 Heller/Kranitz v. Gammell/Phillips
I don't know who will go for UVA. Phillips is a senior with a better season record, but Gammell has wrestled more duals. It is senior night so wonder if that plays a factor. Regardless, Heller beats both of these guys comfortably, and while it is porbably closer if Kranitz goes I would be confident in him against both. PITT Fav
197: #10 Shaw v. Shulaw/Burrell/Weatherspoon
All three of these guys could be the option at 197, all are solid but none are a match for Mac. PITT Fav
285: #14 Pitzer v. NR Christenson
Christenson is not bad, he has a win over Neves (who beat Pitzer vs UNC) but he lost to Neves in the rematch and has no ranked wins. Looking at his season results this is a match Pitzer should win and win comfortably, hopefully that happens and he gets a chance to get some confidence going into ACC's. PITT Fav
Second Half: 4 Pitt Fav, 1 Toss, 0 UVA Fav
Overall: 6 Pitt Fav, 2 Toss, 2 UVA Fav
This is a dual we should win, and could even blow out, but a few small mistakes at the wrong weights and if we don't wrestle our strongest lineup could see this being closer than we would like. I am hopeful for a bounce-back performance that sends us into the postseason on a high note and with some boosted records
