Pitt vs Vanderbilt Thread

Is Capel back next season?

Im really curious what Capel says in the presser.

Because Femi Odukale is our teams leading scorer with 14 points on 5 shots. Yes, you read that correctly, Femi took a total of 5 shots and still scored 14 points. And we scored almost every time he dribble drive into the paint, which is exactly what I said to do both before the game and at halftime.

And Femi was pulled in the last 6 or so minutes when we still had a chance to come back.

I mean, I give the first half a C+ because we came out of the gate showing fight and were competitive. But my goodness and F- for Capel wouldn't be appropriate in that second half and the last 10 minutes of the game, it looks like the Coach quit more than the players. That was quite sad to watch.

The coach quit and so did the players. You could see it in their body language. They gave up.

That's why I asked. The buyout is pretty high but with how this program looks I just can't see him being brought back for a 5th year.
A lot of us didn’t think Stallings would be let go because of money and I was one of them but he was. This is every bit as bad. Every day he is here is another day they’re behind. I know it’s unusual and unlikely for a move to be made any time soon but this is an abomination. And there’s about zero chance Capel can pull out of this mess. It’s over.

Yup I agree. Maybe the extra windfall Pitt will get by playing in a major bowl can offset some of this buyout because Capel needs to go ASAP.

Maybe Capel and his coaches can quit dressing like they are cafeteria workers and start taking things seriously by looking presentable. If you're a slob and sloppy at the top, it filters down. Sorry, there's no way out of this until this bum is canned.
I think coaches everywhere got lax with the wardrobe during covid and it's carried over into this year.

Watching this, there is almost no way we win even one conference game. I just don't know how you have him back next year. Man, I had hoped this worked.

Just need to remind everyone we have zero recruits for next year, and only one freshman on the roster. We are on the praecipe of a total and complete collapse of the program

You know what else has carried over? Pitt's shi*ty coaching staff.

That’s what is so depressing. As someone pointed out earlier, if they just would focus on the Champagnie, Femi, Hugley level kids they might actually land a few kids.

I’d say we’re past the precipice. We’re far closer to the abyss and may be in it. There is zero reason for any optimism. None.

If they don’t win an ACC game, and that seems like a real good possibility that would be 2 0fers. It’s hard to go winless in conference. You have to be a special kind of bad.

This team is considerably less talented than Stallings last team.

Femi was hurt

I think it’s time to name and shame

who were the deep pockets people who decided they wanted to crash this program by getting rid of Dixon in the first place??

If you wanted to burn it to the ground it wouldn’t look any different at all.
So… who were these geniuses?? I think bad decisions need to be addressed… perhaps a flogging shaming ceremony at halftime of the next game??

We somehow managed to be worse than I expected. We're in real trouble against anyone who plays zone, or has a center. Or plays man I guess.
Whats puzzling is how he could coach around Syracuse zone and destroy it (wasn't it last year?) and then still seem like he's never seen it before. It's absolutely mind blowing???

What’s amazing is that with 13 scholarships and all the recruiting misses we didn’t just take a chance on a guy with a little size that could shoot.

So in the presser to Jeff Capel, the very first question to Capel is how do we get more offense?
And in his answer and the very first thing he says, we need to dribble penetrate to the basket more. Well No shit Jeff. That's exactly what I've been saying Femi should be doing. Over and over again. And over again. Like a broken record. Femi looked like he was ready to fight while his presser took place after the game.

Congrats to Femi, you played great tonight. And you made all your free throws.

Nate was respectable tonight. A lot of pressure on him for a freshmen, but he did ok given the circumstances.

You two call yourselves the underdogs, keep it going, you two were fine tonight.

Everybody else better get in the gym after tonight, including Capel.

Of all the criticisms of Capel, this is the least valid.

Huggy says hi.

If you’re serious about athletics, as a P5, the buyout shouldn’t be an issue to fix a problem with a MBB program. One of the few advantages to the ACC is a nice pay check, so we might as well use it.

Look at our Non-conference schedule. We’ve got St Johns who is likely a bubble team if they stay healthy and two P5 bottom feeders, one of which just smoked us on our home court. All week there have been all these fantastic tournament/stand alone games and we’re stuck scheduling trash like this because we’re so far away from prime time ready that playing a real team right now would border on abuse. You have to fix this, cost be damned.

We still can’t hit an outside shot so teams just pack it in the middle. As soon as Vanderbilt could make a few shots the game was over. This is embarrassing. Capel sucks and the team has no more identity than it did four years ago. I get they lost the top 5 leading scorer from a 500 team but that is on the coach and recruiting. I’m sure smf had no problem counting every attendee as well.

does hugley make it through the season before opting for the portal? We are at the level of stony brook and Oakland
