Pitt Women-sweet 16

I’m not sure how winnable it is. Memphis is 20-1 and has won 17 in a row. We are playing them in Arkansas and Memphis is right across the river from Arkansas. I thought Memphis controlled the game against Notre Dame.

But, this team has a habit of surprising people. And, in both the tournament games our WPIAL players have been goal scoring machines. 10 goals for Pitt in 2 matches, and tonight beating a #2 seed and the SEC champion on the road. Ellie Coffield’s free kick goal that tied the match would have made Messi proud and then she scored the winner in a header after a perfect cross from Sarah Schupansky on a corner. Under Waldrum, Pitt might be the best team in the country on dead ball plays. I wouldn’t count this team out of any match.

The thing is, the goal that put Arkansas up 3-2 was scored on a corner, and it was Coffield’s mark that got up and over her for the goal. But Ellie didn’t flinch. She just took the bull by the horns and scored the next two. What a competitor. The winner she scored on a corner herself. I wonder if the player she beat to the ball was the Arkansas goal scorer that scored on her earlier? I wouldn’t be surprised.

I'm no soccer guru, but the games I've watched on tv shows a
team that's improved throughout this season, and for that
matter, a program that's gotten better since Coach Waldrum
has gotten here. Even an untrained soccer eye like mine, can see
how well these young women are playing.

Coaching matters! He's won at other places, including an NCAA
championship. As for those who think you can't compare coaches
in differenr sports, the comparison that should be made is how do
they stack up against their peers in the same sport? This guy is
among the top of the heap in women's soccer. Too bad we can't
say that in football.

I know nothing about soccer recruiting, but a little research shows me
the following:
- Schupansky, All American, All State, All Region, All WPIAL, and a bunch
of state and national clubs, camps, etc. etc.
- Coffield, All American, All State, Gatoraid player of the year. All Wpial,
and on an on.
- Mertz, U.S. high school All American, All state, All WPIAL, etc. Transferred
to Pitt.
- West, Canadian. I guess a top recruit, and considered one of or maybe THE
best to play at Pitt. Holds scoring records here.

This program was in the dumpster. Waldrum?....See above above and once
again, Sweet 16.

Capel the other night when asked about Pitt VBall said that he picks Dan Fishers brain. And if he picks Dan’s brain, I bet he’s done so with Coach Waldrum and Coach Vidovich. I would think that all of our coaches are blessed to have the great coaching counterparts at this university to learn from.

I actually thought Arkansas fouled Pitt on the corner that made it 3-2. If you look at replays, it appears as if an Arkansas player was on each side of the scorer and simply pushed defenders out of the way to give the scorer room. But, those fouls are almost never called.

Thanks for the find. I was really trying with the other angle to determine how the goal was scored and if there was a breakdown defensively or if it was Coffield wanting it more. Your angle shows that the defender miss timed her jump. That said, I doubt anyone wanted it more than Coffield. That’s who she is.

Eh. Memphis plays in a mid-major league. They may be good but you can't look at their record. I'd say Pitt would be a slight favorite.

Memphis has a unique roster

Good example. You mentioned the three coaches I'm already
on record here saying they're our three best.....Fisher, Waldrum,
and Vidovich. National championships, Final Fours, etc. etc.
I believe they're to be compared to their peers. How else do we
account for volleyball All Americans coming here from California
and other far away places? How is Waldrum able to get WPIAL
All Stars who were also All State, and All Americans, now come
to Pitt? Never happened before. Vidovich had a rebuilding yr this
season and still made it into the NCAA's. He even recruits Europeans
who end up as pros after leaving Pitt.

It happens now with Waldrum when it didn’t before because the last staff didn’t want or respect the local players, all American, all region, all state or all WPIAL. The staff had no interest. The first thing Randy did when he came in is build relationships with the local clubs and he offered their best players.

Well. I don't get it. Why would the previous coaches ignore top
players from here when this should probably be their base for
recruiting. Seems pretty dumb to me.
Of course on the other hand, Waldrum came here
already established in the soccer world having won 2 NCAA
championships, is an international coach, and has coached in
the professional ranks. Good as we're presently doing, it
seems like he has them on a greater upswing. Again, coaching
matters. This guy's got it.

Well it’s complicated. It’s like football going to Florida for an overrated 3 star when there’s an underrated 3 star here who is underrated because of the area and league they are in. They never respected the talent here but they weren’t unique in that opinion.

Pitt scored a last minute goal to beat the #2 seed.

4-3 Panthers

Ellie Coffield with the tying goal and winning goal.

Well done ladies.

Next up Memphis. Very winnable game.
When and what TV network?

I know it’s the sweet 16, and last night was pretty cool. But it’s hard to too what our Vball ladies just did at the Pete.
Yeah, I saw that. Down 0-2 in sets and came back to win 3 straight to
win the match. That IS "hard to do." Not to beat the same old drum, but
again......Coaching. Of course we have great players, but Fischer got em
here because he can recruit. Obviously these guys know their X's and O's
but they get great players here and know how to build a program.

Those players are great and have Guts. To come back like that from an
0-2 deficit against an even higher ranked team is extraordinary. BTW,
the Pete had a lot of fans. Any idea how many?

8500.

And I find myself wondering what Fish said to the gals when they blew the 2nd set after having a big lead and a couple set points. But then again I’m sure we all know what he said. But I’d love to have heard how he said it.

I've only see him on tv in games. He strikes me as kinda mild mannered,
and not a screamer, but what do I know, LOL. I have no idea what he said.
Regardless, what it really took for those players to come back like they
did, was what was inside of them. That was some GUTSY comeback.

Well what I meant was he probably said one point at a time, we can’t get it all back at once, yada yada yada. The same thing every coach would say. But his demeanor and his spin on it is something I would have loved to hear.
