Some thoughts on the women's game:

--This team is really young - and they played like it. Starting 3 sophs and 2 freshmen I guess you have to expect some blunders, and there were many, especially early in the game. But there were also glimpses of a team that can grow into a really good team. Probably not this season, but next season and the year after, this team should be formidable.

--Tonight, they missed a lot of layups and they gave up a lot of easy layups when Delaware State players dribbled around them. Pitt did play a lot better defense in the second half.

--Freshman Kalista Walters is very good at scoring when she gets the ball down low. Seems to have a knack for making those close in shots with either hand. She was 9 for 14, but that also included a few mid-range jumpers. She has a strange, somewhat herky-jerky shooting motion on her jumpers, but it seems to work for her.

--Freshman Brenna Wise is a gung-ho player. She's aggressive and all over the place. She shot 5 for 12; had several misses around the rim. She had 6 offensive rebounds and 9 overall.

--Soph Yacine Diop is just fun to watch when she's using her quickness to drive to the hoop or in transition. She is by far the most athletic player on the floor and when she gets flying she is awesome to watch. She was in foul trouble most of the game but made some spectacular plays.

--Soph Stasha Carey looks a little leaner and more athletic than she did last season. I think she will end up being the go-to player on offense, but for now, the team isn't focused on feeding her the ball. She ended up with 10 points on 4 for 4 shooting with one 3-pointer.

--Soph Aysia Bugg struggled to finish some drives early on, but she made a series of really nice plays in the second half. She ended up with 7 assists and only 1 turnover.

--Fred Potvin is hustling, but her shooting is cold. I remember she struggled early last season before she found her 3-point stroke.

--Freshman Kauai Bradley made a couple of 3-pointers - though one was a banker. She's an intriguing player given how athletic she is. She's 6'-0", but she's really skinny.

--Suzie's daughter Madison has joined the team. She's a freshman - a 5-6 guard.

Be interesting to see how soon this group of good, young players can become a good team.

Go Pitt.

It is amazing how young this team is. They start young and bring in a bunch of young players off the bench. Young yes, but damn, you can see a lot of talent there. They have a chance to be really good some day. Probably not this year, but maybe next.

Some observations. Walters seems to have a nice mid-range shot. Bradley may be the skinniest basketball player I've ever seen. It will be interesting to see how she holds up as the season goes on. Wise goes pretty much 100%, pretty much 100% of the time. While the defense was often not good, they have some players who are very quick and who can really create havoc by getting touches on the ball and disrupting the flow of the offense. If they can get better at positioning and moving their feet the potential is there to be a pretty good defensive team. I mean look at tonight. Yeah, it was just Delaware State and yeah, they got beat a little too frequently from not moving their feet and keeping the ball handler in front of them. And yet Delaware State scored 43 points. I don't know the exact number but that had to be close to a 70 possession game. 43 points in even, say, 65 possessions would be very good indeed.

And Pitt has just the right coach to get the best out of these ladies.

A note about Naje Gibson--She had missed game #3 at her new JUCO (Monroe CC, Rochester, NY) and I was thinking maybe academic issues continued to be an issue. However, she must have just been sick since she came back and has played subsequently. Hope she graduates with the necessary 2.5+ GPA next spring and can be at Pitt next season.

Here is a link to their last game result--Naje Gibson had 18 points and 7 boards--
