I sat my kid down and told her she had to make some choices. Last winter/spring, she did dance, threw for track, had a decent sized part in the school musical, plus volleyball. Told her she couldn't reasonably do all of that with some of the advanced classes she wanted to take. She gave up dance and the musical and she's glad she did. She's practicing and doing strength training four nights a week, right now, and the club season is heating up. She even got to fill in for a women's league team that was short a player. She just likes volleyball more. And to be clear, she's no D1 volleyball player.
Compared to the commitment to play HS basketball out here in the sticks, this feels very comfortable. It's very common to drive over an hour to get to an away game. With practices and all, this doesn't feel as bad. But it isn't easy. Reese Hazelton did the trip to Pittsburgh for club for years. The clubs our here are just now dabbling in fielding elite teams but even then, they're not competitive, yet. Our three best teams were just out in Cleveland for the JVA Rock N Rumble and got handled pretty easily in the Open and Premier divisions by some elite midwestern and Canadian clubs.
