Well, our moto for the year is shaping up to be "a win is a win". Given our track record of mind-numbing losses, I'll definitely take it, but it wasn't to be confused with a work of art. Here's a few quick thoughts:

The Good:

1. Defense: hard to find too many faults when you defense holds the other team to a single score. An overall good effort by the D.

2. D-line: In particular, our D-line play was strong. We're getting a lot more penetration this year and disrupting plays before they start. Our pass rush was also good today. Rory Blair played a very nice game, as did Render. Nice to have those 2 back.

3. Peterman threw the ball reasonably well today. He still seems to be waiting too long to deliver, but that will come as he gains confidence and learns the system better.

4. Running backs were solid, but not spectacular. Both Ollison and Hall ran hard. They just didn't have much room today.

Needs Work:

1. LB play was still not great IMO. On the Akron TD, where in the name of god were our inside backers?

2. Offensive Line was not good in run blocking today. There really were no holes at all up the middle.

3. Besides Boyd, do we even have another WR on the field?

4. Punting wasn't good although given the weather, that's probably understandable.

5. I shudder to think of Blewitt having to make a 40 yard FG with the game on the line.

Overall, it was a pretty uninspiring win, but a win nonetheless. Our D played well but I wonder how much the really bad QB play of Akron had to do with this.

We will learn a lot about this team next week. If we play at the level of the first 2 games, Iowa will destroy us. We need to step it up in a big way. Should be interesting to see how the team responds.

Well they had almost 500yards against their top rival school and have had 2 different 100 yard rushers.

I don't think they aren't "good" ... Maybe not great, but certainly the best team we will have played

The younger players like Bookser, O'Neil, Ollison, Hall, etc. are stepping up their games in place of injured veterans. There have and will be growing pains anytime you have this level of infusion of younger players.

Last night's weather conditions leveled the playing field a bit, limiting explosive plays.

Kicking, like others have stated, is still a major concern. Blewitt needs to hit a couple clutch kicks to improve his focus.

Moving forward; I really like the way the schedule sets up. The opponents are increasing in difficulty each game. Iowa is a solid team who will be an even greater test for our defense. However, one cannot discount the experience Narduzzi had against Ferentz. I guess the same could have been said for Chryst, but I just never got the sense that gameplaning was one of his strengths.

From here, there are absolutely no gimmes; all of the opponents are recognized as either P5 schools or ND. Focus shouldn't be an issue, however, we'll see how this team reacts to an upgrade in the schedule.

Encouraged by:
Peterman-looks like a player
D line-big improvement
Low penalties-so far

Worries:
injuries-need James back-Ollison was gassed
kicker-still shaky for a while now
Voityk-may be shot
Playing alot of young players

--Good points. Soto looks like a better player than he was last season - moving better; playing more aggressively...

--I've been concerned about Pitt getting more pass interference penalties because of the DBs' more aggressive use of hands in pass defense. Remains a concern going forward, but the few overall penalties so far has been impressive.

--Biggest concern right now are the offensive line and the injury to Mitchell. We need Biz back and we need him to play well. We need Rowell to play stronger or we need to move Officer back to center. We need the two freshmen OTs to somehow morph into grizzled veterans over the next week.

--We need Mitchell back, or for Webb to pick up his game.

Go Pitt.
