Proof that a good coach can rebuild quickly

Iowa State was winless in the Big 12 last year…

Wow. This is amazing. I’ll be paying attention to them in the Big12 this year. They may be my new favorite team. Only ISU and KSU finished below my former favorite Big 12 team (TCU) last year. This year will be interesting . Jamie has got off to a decent start too, only losing to Santa Clara. What’s amazing is the former ISU coach took over a good program and took them deep into the NCAA and progressively got worse each year and capped it off going 0-18 in just 4-5 years.

People forget Capel actually did rebuild Pitt quickly. We were 6-7 in the ACC in Year 2 with nice OOC wins over Rutgers, KSt, NW, and in "First Four Outs." We were in position to make the NCAAT. Then it all fell apart.

This is why I don't want to hear people saying you cant win here or the rebuild is too hard. Capel did it super quick but then couldn't manage the personalities on the team. 0-19 to First Four Out in 22 months shows its not that difficult.

And you can now see what Big John’s absence to last year’s team meant in hindsight. And this year wouldn’t be as dire with the two missing guards in the rotation. Seems to be some cohesion forming as the transfers learn their roles. I’m trying hard here as most can tell.

It's a given that a good coach can rebuild a program quickly and, most importantly, not have it be a flash in the pan. He'd be able to maintain the level of play throughout the season and into subsequent years consistently. We don't have that kind of coach at Pitt right now. But we did when Ben Howland came here and Jamie Dixon maintained the high level of play.

Sorry but Dixon was on the way down when he left Pitt in a free fall!!

In Dixon's worst years, and there were maybe 1 or 2 of those, he was still 100 times better than what we've had since he was pushed out.

I'll wait until the day comes that we hire a decent basketball coach again. I'm confident we will someday. Until then, we just have to face the fact that we made huge mistakes in hiring Stallings and now Capel.

You’re right, moving on from Dixon wasn’t the mistake. It’s what we did after.

It was a big loss. We needed him. It put too much on Coulibaly's shoulders...and led to way too much Brown.
