Should be interesting to see how the Nigerian rec soccer team does against full-time pro players. My guess is Waldrum had to have open tryouts. These are the types of teams our women play against and we say how great they are and should pay them as much as the men who actually have to play real pro soccer teams

8-0?

You are nauseating. We had this same thread a few months ago. Nigeria has been competitive at recent World Cups. They actually advanced to the knockout stage in 2019, which was the deepest and best World Cup ever. As African sides go, they are the most well trained and skilled. They have 2 NWSL players and at least a dozen who play in top Euro women’s leagues (mostly Spain, which is a good league). So no, they are not a rec team. But go ahead and use it as another chance to get a shot in at the USWNT.

Absolutely correct. the only reason USAWNT is so dominant is that the USA is one of very few countries to adopt feminism early, have things like Title IX, actually train females to play, half the countries they play against don't have any system and are still telling the girls to go to the kitchen and wash the dishes.

The Nigerians playing in La Liga are making $17,000/year. The 11 playing in the Nigerian league cant be making more than 1K or 2K per year so that's more of a rec league.

The last two times the US played Nigeria, both in the World Cup, the US won 1-0.

In this tournament the US beat Jamaica 4-0, while Jamaica beat Nigeria 1-0. The US beat Portugal 1-0, while Nigeria and Portugal played to a 3-3 draw.

So yeah, obvious 8-0 would be the most likely outcome.

Tonight is the first event at the new Austin MLS Stadium. Amazing that a rec league team gets to christen the venue 😂

This game is being broadcasted on ESPN2. 0-0 in the 1st half.

Pretty ragged effort by the US despite dominating possession. Finally a great finish by Christen Press right before half. Nigeria as expected by most other than SMF had been competent and had a few dangerous chances.

This thread was entertaining. And by the end, I learned the final result. Too bad the US won. Coach Waldrum is a good man.

I think this is pretty clearly the last ride for many of the older players on the team.
I thought that after the last World Cup. They’d have had all this time to integrate new players for a few years before the next World Cup. Should have sent them off as winners and moved on.

It’s so political. A couple of those 30 somethings need to move on. Lots of non primadonna players on the team and in the system.
A lot of good players not given the chance because of these veterans that are in need of moving on.

Who in the organization will tell these players to move on? Too damn scared of some of them.

They could probably play until they're 50 and still beat all those rec teams so who cares.

In fairness, Jill Ellis had the stones to basically kick the best goalkeeper in the world off the US team after the ‘16 Olympics. Rapinoe, Press and Lloyd certainly qualify as prima donnas, but I don’t get the sense that they are culture problems the way Hope Solo was.

But because of the schedules that isn't usually the way that it works. Normally there is only one year between the World Cup and the Olympics, and then three years to the next World Cup, so the big changes tend to happen after the Olympic, not after the World Cup.

After the World Cup an older player thinks that they only have to make it one more year to play in the Olympics, hey, I can do that. But after the Olympics that same player thinks well now I have to make it three more years to the next World Cup, that probably isn't going to happen.

Of course this cycle has turned into anything but normal, so there is that.

Ok. Maybe 40. They are playing nobodies.

The USWNT winning World Cups is like Pitt winning all those pre WW2 football national championships. Nobody was playing then and nobody was taking it seriously.

Press should still be on the 18 member Olympic team, the other 2, not so much.
Lloyd absolutely belongs, albeit as a 70th minute sub. She just has a knack for coming up with big goals. I struggle with Rapinoe because I am not a fan of hers personally, but she looks pretty good right now after having a lot of injury issues. She is also excellent on set pieces which counts for something.

Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis are the two best players on this team in my opinion and they seemingly get no headlines.

Remember in the Olympics, rosters are only 18 players not the normal 23. Rapinoe just isn't that good anymore and you need someone that can play more than 20 minutes like Lloyd can at the Olympics due to the short roster. Agree about Lavelle and Mewis, Lavelle deserved the Golden Ball at the last WC, not Rapinoe.

Maybe the new Victoria’s Secret gig will motivate Rapinoe to retire now and let some new blood play on the US team.

Unfortunately that ain’t happening. I can’t see that ego steeping away and US soccer doesn’t have the balls to cut her loose.

This isn’t 1998. Countries all over the world have caught up. We still spend a lot on our program. But money doesn’t always guarantee victories. Just ask Barcelona. or the Yankees. Or Kentucky basketball.

Although...Barcelona did just win Champions League in women’s soccer. They blew out Chelsea in the final and Chelsea is absolutely loaded and dominant while not having one American on the roster. I’m not sure Barcelona had any Americans either.

I probably should have used sarcasm font. But I think us soccer is scared to deal with rapinoe
I know what you meant. No worries. But not only Rapinoe...but the angry mob bullies too. Abilities no longer matter...only checking the right boxes does.
