Retread or lottery ticket?

The problem is that the failure rate is ao high for these mid-major coaches (look at Rutgers and Penn State) that there is no way to really tell if you are hiring a good one or not. The failure rate has to be something like 75%. I dont think Pitt can afford that risk.
I mean we just saw the failure rate with a "retread" in Stallings. And sometimes those older guys are considered "safer" with a higher floor, but lower ceiling.

I don't see Pitt poaching a "major" basketball coach. That then leaves: assistant, mid-major or retread.
I'm sure the failure rate is high on all of those.

Yes.

Retread = safer, higher floor, lower ceiling, less risk/reward

Mid-major = higher ceiling, lower floor, high risk/reward

Major P6 assistants would be the same risk/reward as mid-major HC's.

There is no great answer here and that's why I think Pitt should find the money and over-correct by poaching a good P6 coach

The reaction matters a great deal because people who are upset by it don't buy season tickets. You dont hire an unpopular coach unless you are absolutely sure they are the one.
It doesn’t.

There will be no bump in demand or attendance until the coach earns it by winning and recruiting well.

Write that down

You don't think how much fans like or dislike a coaching hire matters in terms of season ticket sales?

There isn't anyone that we are going to bring in that is going to cause a huge increase in season ticket sales. However making a change, almost any change, will keep next year's season ticket sales static or maybe even help a little. Doing nothing is going to cause season ticket sales to absolutely crater.

Let's say this year they sold 3,500 season tickets. Changing coaches might keep that number around 3,500, maybe kick it up a little to 4,000. Bringing Stallings back next year will see that number drop. 2,000? 1,500? 1,000? Those are all in play without making a change.

Pitt desperately needs a change , but compounding one mistake with another for changes sake is stupid and co$tly . Think hiring someone who wins 4 games next season and 5 the following will bring the fans back ? I don’t . They won’t hire a guy who hits a home run , but they need a guy who can at least hit a double a single hitter won’t help .

Conversely, keeping a proven failure because you're scared to make the next hire is even more stupid.

Unfortunately, I agree completely.

DT - who would u like to see us go after and who do u think they are interested in?
If what we are hearing about Danny Hurley is true and he can get him, I would be very, very pleased, After that, I have no idea.

I like this game.
I'd:
  • Hire the retread
  • Buy a lottery ticket
  • Kill Barnes
Oh, thought we were playing Hire/Buy/Kill...

No.

Let’s presume Stallings was largely despised from day 1 by many.

Now- if he made a sweet 16 run in year 1 -
Do you think season tickets would have been higher or lower?

If instead of going winless in conference- we’re an nit team- will we sell more or less next year- despite the coach not being liked?

Your entire premise is literally upside down
